HUUUUGE TALENT ! I just can't believe it, you cannot expect what's gonna come from her incendiary imagination, and her incredibly powerful solo made me cry.
I am listening to this while I am trying to do something else and her music is sooo nice it pulls me away from whatever I was doing! She is so very good on this one!
This tune brings back long forgotten memories from the three years I spent in Taiwan in the early sixties with my parents. The song (the original Japanese version) was on the radio at all times, despite the fact that the relationship between Taiwan and Japan was, as I remember, not at the most cordial at the time. Hiromi's version is impressive! I have now ordered, in addition to the three CDs I already have, two more!. I am utterly and totally charmed by her music and by that young lady.
Wow... what a cool arrangement of that old pop tune. And she's amazing. The only problem I hear is that the sound levels probably were ear-damaging...
You can tell by her body language that Hiromi didn't expect a quick open hi-hat at 6:35. And you can also tell that she expected him to do it again at the end of that similar phrase at 6:38....but Martin didn't do it again haha.
I disagree... it did not to appear to affect her building ostinato but it was incredibly musical and supportive... thanks for bringing that interesting nuance to my attention....
@bpclips I calls bullshit. She moved and opened her mouth on emphasized rests. That's something she does several other times in her solo, like at 6:33. 'Sides, she obviously knows this band and grooves with them really well; a little thing like that wouldn't throw someone of her caliber off.
you are right she is a freak of nature, this child is magnificent every so often God puts on this planet great individuals in there own right, this child is God sent and earthly divine as a musician...nothing but the best is going to happen for her.
@drnubian You're opening yourself up to a bunch of stupid fuckwits who want to make your beliefs sound stupid, so brace for a shitstorm, if you would.
The woman can PLAY the piano. & you'd hardly guess that this was played as a wistful ballad back in the early 1960s when it was a hit in Japan and in the USA (as "sukiyaki" of all things).
i just learned the melody on guitar and trumpet...my goodness its so much fun to play. you can really make this song groove. and its on an easy key to solo on! well for trumpet anyways ^_^. Hiromi ftw!
You can find this song on the album, "Beyond Standards" I recently gotten into Hiromi Uehara and i've come to love her style and music. Also, The original for this song is very nice to listen to. It's by a japanese singer named Kyu Sakamoto and the song is..well...Ue wo muite arukou..lol
Don't chew or digest it all too much intellectually...you'll eventually lose the robust flavor. I like the emotion, tone/color and sense of movement I experience. Technique sans emotions is like painting by the numbers. Just soar and drift with her...she can transport me...that's enough.
At this point it's a matter of what specific sounds you want to hear. These are the exact sounds I want to hear, that's all that matters. Comparing her to other artist is a waste of time.
just cannot agree with you, she's so good and with a great technic, but for me Mehldau seems to be creating a new way to make piano, a new musical sistem. She still being so impresive
In retrospect, I find you are correct. I much prefer Brad Mehldau's artistry and style to Hiromi. Mehldau's use of counterpoint and motif is unparalleled and excitingly fresh. My previous statement is not true.
However, Hiromi is a unique artist with great skill. She is just not revolutionary. She seems to be similar to Joshua Redman in that sense.
Yeah, she is technically great, but mechanics involved in Bill Evans or Brad Mehldau playing is something really more than speed and expresive soloing like hiromi has.

@somecallmetim46 It's a little box called an envelope triggered filter. Costs $20 or so.
