IMO, kaoru. Tomoe didn't fit my taste I felt that she was pretty much useless and those kind of cliche female characters who are too gentle and need someone to depend on all the time. They are both important to what makes Kenshin who he is but the difference is that Kaoru had personality and also she had genuine kindness to the point she provided a home for strangers.

I think it's kinda pointless to ask such stuff... both girls were what he needed. Tomoe gave Kenshin the faith in life and humanity that he almost lost back, whereas Kaoru gave him a home to return to as well as hope for the future.

So yeah, I think both are, were and will be important for Kenshin. Having to choose one would be against a good part of Kenshin's development, and it wouldn't be fair for them either. And both were awesome, IMHO.

i have one question in the last part of samurai x trust and betrayal did tomoe jump and sacrifce herself because of her love for kenshin or to atone for her sins of letting her first husband go to his death.

@thingsneversay I did some research and it says that she did it for the love for Kenshin, but she didn't want to love him because she felt guilty for loving the man who killed her lover, so she had no choice. And anyways it can show that she didn't run away from him because she didn't love him(which she did).

Kenshin chose Kaoru over Tomoe not because the latter's dead. What Megumi meant was Kenshin chose to love Kaoru and spend the rest of his life with her over wandering with nothing but the memory of Tomoe. and perhaps vowing never to love anyone again. It's a powerful choice after 10 years of wandering Japan. Only one woman made him stay. Kaoru.

Megumi said that Kenshin chose to spend the rest of his life with Kaoru and not Tomoe. That's obvious because Tomoe was dead and choosing her over Kaoru would mean he'd choose to spend the rest of his life being haunted by her memory which neither Tomoe nor Kenshin would want. It doesn't mean he chose Kaoru over Tomoe as the love of his life. He loves them both. Note that he still visits Tomoe's grave every year even after that.

this one in the video is the OVA while the one we saw with 95 episodes are the animated series, they made the OVA to portray kenshin's past life before his cross-shaped scar and the other part was his life with kaoru
