  • I think their music is OK, but I can't support them because of their anti-Semitic beliefs.

  • @MIKEPORTNOYING, since when does Porcupine tree hate jews?

  • Dream theatre is okay... But all the progg bands from the 70's and porcupine tree are much better still...

  • *___*

  • such a sensual song I'm melting

  • Hi Kinky. No, metalheads don't take Opeth seriously, of course not. (No serious music fan does)

Is that fact still lost on some folks?

  • @SpookyAction123 Ok man i cant tell if your joking or just being contrarian...

Could you elaborate on why Opeth is so bad?

I mean the repetition kind off gets to me sometimes but....But they have released some of the best death metal ive ever heard.

  • @SpookyAction123 Why do you dislike Opeth? Again, I can't tell if you're actually serious. And Akerfeldt has one hell of a voice... and they really have released some of the best Death Metal on the planet... Music with a purpose and zero mindlessness.

  • dat guitar solo

  • amazing dose anyone have any recomended bands similer or atleast other progressive rock i cat fin dmuch if anyone has good ideas reply plz

  • @matthew16275 If you like metal I would recommend Opeth - especially the Blackwater Park album. The album 'Damnation' is also great and that one is more rock-like than metal-like.

  • @KinkyOnkel33 "If you like metal I would recommend Opeth"

BAA HAA HAA! No, if you like metal, steer clear of Opeth!

  • @SpookyAction123 Nigga what? Are you deaf or just haven't listened to the 8 albums of metal Opeth has blessed us with?

Here's a better tip KinkyOnkel33, steer clear of opinions and use your own judgement when listening to music.

  • @matthew16275 Despite the troll comment above, Opeth is a very good metal band if you like the proggyness that Porcupine Tree brings, apart from the serious brilliance of their frontman. Dream Theater, Amorphis and Mastodon might also be worth checking out... I also recommend checking out Steven Wilson's solo work. Oh, and you might like Katatonia. Haven't personally heard them, but heard good things about them.

  • @matthew16275 You need to check out Haken ;)

  • This is just pure epicness.

  • why did you cut off the electro-shock therapy quote at the end? one of the best parts of the song.

  • @UndeadByson Maybe you should check out some more of my channel.

  • @UndeadByson You sir, are a bag O' douche

  • @UndeadByson Grow some balls and listen to extrerme metal and prog rock.

  • @UndeadByson But I came here from metal!

  • Check out rishloo also. The feathergun albun is very good

  • This is the first time I've actually sat down and listened to this band, and im stunned, to say the least.

  • Best Porcupine Tree song ever? Quite possibly.

  • @EnragedSephiroth You've gotta listen to Russia On Ice. Then tell me what the best Porcupine Tree song is, lol.

  • @crazya7xman I have, the verdict still stands: Dark Matter.

  • and...HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE ESPECIALLY THE PORCUPINE TREE FANS :D

  • Everytime i lissen PT i know that im lissen music..i mean...the real one.

  • Stoned to the bone

  • My favourite song of PT.

  • Comment removed

  • This song is absolutely perfect.

  • You just experienced a heavy session of electric shock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks. All those childhood traumas, magically wiped away. Along with most of your personality.

  • Dream Theater are overrated and boring

they attempt to be the most EPIC band in the world, but they always fail except maybe Metropolis 2 and 6 degrees of inner turbulence

Opeth are not so megalomanic, but I don't dig their music because I don't like Mikael's vocals

TOOL are also pretty decent, but not as great as people think

can you reccomend me any new band simillar to PT except Oceansize, Riverside, Mars Volta and the bands I mentioned?

  • @gogolplex74 Check out The Pineapple Thief.

  • @gogolplex74 Steven Wilson's solo albums, Blackfield, Pain of Salvation, Anathema, Devin Townsend, Katatonia

  • @TheSwagganator I've checked out and love all SW side projets except Bass Cummunion, which is kinda boring

    I'll check out the rest

  • @gogolplex74 you like PT and think Dream Theater are boring? rofl... "I'd like to surrender the rest of my time to my opponent. In the interest of fairness... " rofl.

  • @Madaxxeman I don't think they're really boring, I just think they're trying too hard to sound epic

  • @gogolplex74 pink floyd at their prime...?

  • @WyldeJakk I said new bands

IO listened to most old prog bands

  • @gogolplex74 I would recommend personally: Marillion, The Flower Kings, King Crimson, Radiohead, Three, and Pink Floyd (Obviously).

  • @funkymacgee7 I don't know Marillion and Flower Kings and Three and I said I wanted some new prog bands

I've listened to most old bands

I love pink floyd and king crimson and I'm big fan of radiohead

  • @gogolplex74 You want prog bands: Marillion, Flower Kings, Three, also Animals as Leaders. Come on now.

  • @gogolplex74 Ephrat.one album only but its GREAT.well i love it,you may not.

  • @Jonnyjy I really love this album, one of my favorite

  • @bendeqana yes is a fantastic album.pitty that they dont have much more albuns.i think you agree with that.

  • @gogolplex74 Dream Theatre is Fucking epic. Period.

  • @MrMollusk7 If you really want to listen to beatiful guitar Jan Akkerman is your man.

  • @tanngard I'll check him out. Thanks.

  • @jzsking *cough* *cough* Devin Townsend! Devin Townsend!

  • thanks 0611dean, will definitely check out those recommendations..always interested in hearing new stuff or discovering bands I hadn't been fully aware of previously

  • So smooth.

  • Nice guitar solo at the end -- definitely channeling David Gilmour.

  • I find it amusing that I have a top comment when it has nothing to do with this song.

...Oh wait, most top comments are like that.

  • Search in the last fm the similar bands, and be happy.

  • If those don't do it, Parabola (also multi-layered, but different tone from Lateralus) and Aenema (a heavier, shorter song) also represent Tool pretty well. Others of note by DT would include Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (a 42-minute epic broken into 8 movements that never really gets repetitive or dull), Metropolis Part 1 (the high point of Images & Words, an album many fans swear by but that I find overrated), and The Count of Tuscany (cheesy singing & lyrics, but awesome guitar tones).

  • @theastralproject at first i read 'one two three four five six STEVEN' :P

  • so just to be sure, if I like PT stuff, I would like Dream Theater and Tool? I listened to some stuff by both bands and don't find it as interesting as PT by quite a distance. Any song or album recommendations?

  • @Thanksandy

Lateralus and Parabola by tool!.... the song called "H." if you like the slower haunting feel. Tool is great because of the depth of their lyrics.

  • @Thanksandy For Tool, Lateralus outshines the rest, and make sure you listen for the Fibonacci connection to fully "get it." For DT... hmm, listening to The Spirit Carries On (version from Score), Hollow Years (Live at Budokan), Octavarium studio version (there's a full analysis of its many layers easily found on Google), A Change of Seasons, The Ministry of Lost Souls, and Stream of Consciousness would, taken together, give a pretty good idea of DT's variety.

  • @APolaris I tried listening to Lateralus and Parabola yesterday, but I couldn't get into eithe tune, I need something a bit more up tempo or epic..maybe I shouldn't have posted a comment on this PT track, as I am not after a long winded, slow burning, 9 minute tune, but just something a long the lines of other Steve Wilson and PT work like Lazarus, Fear of A Blank Planet, Time Flies, Down With Me, Blackest Eyes, Deadwing etc..

  • @Thanksandy I'm... not totally sure what you're looking for, then. "Epic" (which means very long, multi-layered, mentally deep, and on a grand scale) tends to contradict "up tempo" (which means fast). Also, other than Deadwing, the listed songs... really doesn't fit either of those descriptions.

  • @Thanksandy give PENDRAGON a listen. british prog band been around for as long PT but also hardly known. look up CONCERTO MAXIMO live in poland ( start with WALLS OF BABYLON ) NICK BARRETT is one of best guitarists ive seen live (and ive seen a few) ;-)

  • @Thanksandy also give BREAKING THE SPELL a listen .if you love guitar youll love this.

  • Very good music

  • amazing

  • This song makes me want to shoot up heroin and lay in a corner.

  • one two three four five six seven

one two three four five six seven

one two three four five six seven

one two three four five six seven

  • @theastralproject Bahaha!, doing the same thing!

  • @theastralproject all good children go to heaven

  • @theastralproject Right you are

  • Pink Floyd of the 21st century.

  • @Jukisoba PT has surpassed PF in so many ways.. conceptually, artistically, and lyrically.. but I can't deny that Pink Floyd did pave the way in the previous century primarily due to their longevity. There were alot of short-lived competitors & bright sparks along the way, but PF knew how to stay the course even after Waters left (but they never quite reached the same heights without him in my opinion, but that's another story). And PT is now even challenging the longevity factor. Step aside PF!

  • @Jukisoba Pink Floyd is a drawer full of tangled, different-length, different-colored pieces of string; Porcupine Tree is a hand-knitted argyle sweater.

  • baller ass solo

  • just got turned on to this band and already like waht i here good stuff.

  • fuck you.

  • @jzsking

I respect your opinion, but thanks to Dream Theater i started listening to progressive rock

And even now i still love their sound =p

  • @PeaceMak3r91 Some of Dream Theater's newer albums are a hit or a miss, but Scenes From a Memory and Awake are complete masterpieces.

    But I think you're forgetting another important band... '][' [[]] [[]] '][_

  • @TheSwagganator TOOL is the greatest band today along with porcupine tree and peal jam , i'm not mentioning pink floyd (it's common knowledge to know that pink floyd is the father of all the good bands today)

  • @TheSwagganator

    important? is too little...

  • @TheSwagganator Six degrees is also a fantastic album imo :)

  • @TheSwagganator DT's newest album is a hit for sure imo.

  • @JThrashYT Some of the songs from the new album, such as Bridges in the Sky and Breaking All Illusions are some of DT's best songs ever written. Taken as a whole, though, I think ADToE isn't perfect from start to finish, like SFaM, but it's still probably their best work since Train of Thought.

  • @TheSwagganator switch bridges in the sky with outcry. ;) BITS is a good song too though. but i agree for the most part. i can listen to I&W, awake, and sfam without skipping tracks.

  • @Ecrusix The interview that I spoke about was one in a magazine. It wasn't a video interview. It was funny because he mentioned Pink Floyd and Diana Ross. The Diana Ross part of it was kind of funny. I'll see if I can find this interview somewhere for you. :)

  • @Ecrusix I thought the ame as you until not too long ago, I read an interview transcribed on a magazine. He actually mentioned how his parents listening to Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon) did inspire him amogst other bands.

  • @Ecrusix I know what your talking about but everyones gets inspirations from someone else. Porcupine Tree cites King Crimson and Floyd as their inspirations and it shows in their music

  • These guys should be recognized by everybody on the planet as the musical geniuses that they are.

  • words cannot express the inner peace this song has brought me.

  • Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Dream Theater and Pink Floyd = Perfection!

  • @PeaceMak3r91 Rush,Emerson Lake and Palmer and Planet X too.

  • this song is Porcupine Tree's own Comfortably Numb !

  • Porcupine Tree is like a good wine, they not will be older, they will be better...

  • interesting.... still deciding to get the album or not.... this or cold cave or MGMT or maybe Foals

  • Stunning music. This is what they play on the radio in heaven.

  • @Porojukaha

Be glad that we are member of a very special elite. I shiver by the thought that I have to share this with a bunch of morons.

  • PT's music is absolutely transcendant, modern prog rock at its best.

  • today is the first time ive heard this band and i like it . the only reason im listening is because Mikeal from opeth loves this band and i wanted to hear what the fuss was about... good shit

  • @justgiveitup86 opeth suck

  • @MrSuperpoint

    NOoooooo!!!!

    hehe

  • @MrSuperpoint U suck penis Opeth is the best

  • @justgiveitup86 lol if anybody sucks penis here it'll be opeth.. they're fags.

  • @MrSuperpoint LOL It has been 5 months you said it but I still don't get the connection with their musical skill. They're totally fags but even being homosexual, they still rock more than you, Stop being a hater and get a brain.

  • @justgiveitup86 I like them more then Opeth now. But Mikael Åkerfeldt introduced me to them. Which is great.

  • @PennyDreadful1 ive only hear three sond but i garuntee you they're not bette that Opeth STAT. wise Opeth will kick theer ass

  • The only fault with this killer band is sometimes they become too song oriented and that is only because they have great vocals.I love the background vocals and the feel in the accoustic guitar and keyboards.I wish they would jam just a little more.

  • Hipster Haven

  • @Raywilliamjoseph We used to live in havens before they went mainstream.

  • @BLooDCoMPleX They are not Mainstream. -_-

  • @PennyDreadful1 That's the joke.

  • @BLooDCoMPleX Aha....Oo. Oll Korrect then sry

  • Hey if you guys like this you should also check out Tangent Transmission! Ive been listening to them ever since I heard them on NCIS:LA and love it. Reminds me of Porcupine Tree a bit

  • This song is MUSIC to my ears! LOVE PT!

  • This song makes me feel like missing an ex girlfriend when the current one is more beautiful. The new porcupine tree is more complex, more progressive and brilliant but i still miss the old PT, up the downstair, signfy, on the sunday of life and so...

  • @Ksianth Same here man. For me it kinda went downhill more and more from Stupid Dream.

  • @Metaalhoofdje123 & @Ksianth

You guys are just hipsters, Porcupine Tree is still as great as they've ever been.

  • @AtomicExplosion95695 Yea i listened to Porcupine Tree before they were mainstream! xD

nah, i just don't like their recent sound as much as i liked their old spacier sound.

  • @Metaalhoofdje123 I didn't know Porcupine Tree was "mainstream"......Thanks for the update cool guy

  • @dommyb11 Obviously, you didn't get the joke.

  • @Metaalhoofdje123 would you prefer they stay the same for 10 years??? the new pt is as good or better to me its just amazing how they change from spacey progressive to rock to progressive metal to ballads etc so effortlessly.

  • @ItOffishul Nope, i like change and innovation. I just don't like where PT is going. ;)

  • I can barely cope how awesome PT is.

  • Is because noe of you EVER listened to a single brazillian "pop" music (brazillian commercial music). So you guys have no idea what REAL shit is all about!

Believe me, that suck for real!

  • I actually love the fact that only a small portion of the earth's population can learn to understand and appreciate good music. This is what separates morons from the intelligent. We are the intelligent. And even though it's sad that only a few of us humans are intelligent, I'm actually glad to be one of those selected few to understand that Lil Wayne is shit and PT are musical gods!!!

  • Wow, didn't even notice it was in 7/4 until about halfway through. Sometimes unusual time signatures can be jarring or distracting, but this is really well done.

  • So on pandora used to play this song and it had a couple extra seconds where a mysterious man would say, "Congratulations! You have just undergone a heavy dose of electroshock therapy. We've just washed away all of those bad childhood memories, and a large chunk of your personality, too!" Where can I find the version they used?

  • @AtomicExplosion95695 from what I know this is the actual full song. Song used in this clip was truncated I guess by the poster. Original album Signify has this song with "...electroshock therapy..." bit

  • @AtomicExplosion95695 On the signify album! =D

  • My favourite PT song.

  • Beautiful song.

  • PT is awesome... musicians music for certain LoudenGuitar! This kind of music would melt the brain of a typical mainstream listener!

  • Super

  • first time listening to porcupine tree and... it didnt totally dissapoint me, although its really hard to match the stuff im listening to - prog giants such as genesis, yes, elp... although this is way better than the mindless heavy excuse for a prog band that is Tool. No offense

  • How many Musicians are here listening to this rather than non Musicians?

  • @LoudonGuitar I just have great taste in music.

  • "Dark matter flowing out onto a tape,

Is only as loud as the silence it breaks,"

  • Going back to the song, its fantastic. Pink-floyd influenced (which is something good) progressive/space rock rock song with great instrumentalists.

  • hell yes.

  • @forgiethehippie

lolz PT fans are pretty calm, no one will riot here. try a Justin Bieber video or something

    for your age.

  • Comment removed

  • 6:18 - 6:59 eargasm and 7:00 - 7:12 ejaculation

    one word, genius

  • Absolutely Beautiful song. Kinda depressing though.

  • Why the hell has the world not heard of PT? This video and all their videos should not have a 'dislike' button. Those 4 people that clicked it have no taste. PT are the saviours of music from crap like the MTVs and Grammys of the world.

  • @TheAdam159

i didnt know shit about this band , but the media made me buy a cd of them without listening to one song.

So calm down Porcupine tree is pretty well known,

Focus on the music not the crowd ....

  • Every single PT song is brilliant. and every single song by nearly every band that won a grammy is terrible. Not even like in my opinioin. From an musical talent standpoint they all suck even MORE than my personal opinion of them. How has the world come to this? What is wrong with us? Why cant we just start it all over again? Get me out of here, im surrounded by people, all alone in a prison of sanity while crazy people swirl around me.

  • @Porojukaha Never. The beauty of good music is that it's mostly exclusive to people who actually appreciate good music.

  • @Metaalhoofdje123 Damn Straight!

  • @Metaalhoofdje123

This is actualy a very, very good point that you have made.

    Still.. it is sad.

  • @Metaalhoofdje123

Man thats one hell of a comment

  • @Porojukaha Its completely subjective. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it bad, you just don't like it. There are plenty of people who do. There are people who would claim that PT are terrible and don't have any talent. That's the thing about music, no one person can decide if its good or bad.

  • @metalwillhatecrew Peoples taste in music is subjective, but music is not completely subjective. Objectively, Animals as Leaders is better than Nickelback. AaL is better versed in theory more skilled technically and produce more complex pieces. Objectively they are better, regardless of your personal tastes or preferences. All music is valid, but that does not mean it is all equal. One can decide whether music is good or bad, but they must have the experience, maturity and perception to do so.

  • @MrStupitube Unless, of course, if one considers over complexity to be a negative aspect of music, or believes that simpler songs are 'better' - then of course Nickelback would be better.

I'd really love the world to be as you described, then people would have better taste - unfortunately, despite being able to point out the better musicians (skillwise), you can't objectively rate art :( I once thought like you but I still haven't been able to convince myself otherwise.

  • @FredericoCoelhoNunes I disagree. As to the first part of your response, you are still describing subjective opinion, not objective. Take Strasvinsky for example, I don't like his music for the most part, but that is my subjective opinion. I do listen to his music though because objectively it is awesome, complex composition and his ideas on evolving motifs is groundbreaking. The idea that art cannot be rated objectively is absurd. You put Picasso on the same level as a child's doodles.

  • @MrStupitube Dont let me fool you, I have no musical education whatsoever - and no, I'm not putting Picasso at the same level as a child's doodles. My subjective opinion is that Picasso made great art while a child makes... well, doodles. My point is that you have no way whatsoever to 'prove', so to say, that a piece of art is better than another, so if someone would rate Picasso as highly as doodles I would have no way prove them wrong (unless they change their opinion).

  • @FredericoCoelhoNunes I do not like Picasso's work. I would be embarassed to have it hang on my wall. Yet I can recognize that as an art piece it is better than what I find aesthetically pleasing. If I cannot objectively judge art then this would not be possible. As in your post to Penny, you can objectively judge art based on characteristics or artistic principles. You are confusing the term 'better' with good and bad. There is no bad music, only poorly written/thought out music.

  • @FredericoCoelhoNunes You can judge art objectively because of these artistic principles, whether a person likes or approves of the piece in question makes no difference. Everyone can subjectively judge art, but only those who understand art can objectively judge it. Beethoven was deaf, if you can not look at music objectively, then how is it he is a reknowned composer? Simple, he had a profound understanding of the principles of music. He never even truly experienced his own music subjectively.

  • @FredericoCoelhoNunes Well PT is relatively simple. Which is one of the reasons they felt like a revolution for me when I first heard them.(Open chords in prog!?) All in all music could be as simple and as catchy as it wants. I think its about putting soul into it that matters. And that sounds kind off fluffy but you know it when you hear it.

  • @PennyDreadful1 part 2. You can rate music, and art objectively only when it comes to characteristics which are universaly accepted - take, for example,'complexity'.I dont think any sane personbelieves the Birthday song is as complex as,say, this song. However, since there is no universal acceptance as to what makes a song 'good' or 'bad', it's 100% subjective. Of course common sense plays a big part here (don't think I'll ever meet anyone who prefers doodles to Picasso).
