Isn't leading a problem when using cast bullets in a rifle? I have a .308 Garand and it works very well with everything except underpowered wolf ammo. It even has a chamber insert to stop you from loading 30/06 ammo.
The bullet can be sized just fine...it's the bore ride shank that is the problem. It is measuring .303-.305"..too big. It should be .299-.300" I think I got it worked out.
I am using a lube formula of my own making using bees wax and white lithium grease.Doesn't smoke much and works well from low velocity to up to 2100f/s
Bore ride shank? Is that the portion of the bullet that comes into contact of the bore? Resizing should work, but I am wondering if you are describing a portion of the chamber instead.
The nose portion of the bullet in this design shuld only slide down the barrel...the driving bands should only come into contact with the rifling. The bore ride shank was too fat and would not slide into the barrel like it should...causing a major jam.
Cast bullet oads usually do not generate the pressure to cycle the action...the Lee mold also demostrates that sometimes they come out of the factory too big.
What kind of lead hardness do you need for a semi-auto like that? Im thinking about just casting mine out of Linotype. Going through an LR308 at 2400fps. Not to mention the harsh feeding mechanism.
Ohh! now I see why you wear that boonie hat. PINNGGG! M1 clip smacks u in the head. Ouch. I hope I can get my hands on a M14, or M1 They are my first choices to getting a rifle.
My Flight had this kid get M1 Thumb though. I've heard that the bolt can take your thumb off! I feel sorry for the kid, bbut I've practice well enough so that doesn't happen.
That is a nice looking M1. Why did you choose to go with a custom .308 instead of the standard 30.06? Was it just the availability of cheap milsurp ammo?
Several reasons. The main one is that the .308 is more accurate and available. The second one is when the throat burns out I'll have it rechambered to 30-06.
Oh yes indeed! We have a 6 day trip in May that we are going to do A LOT OF STUFF!!!! AK47, M1 Garand and a bunch of ammo and improvised stuff...and A LOT OF TANNERITE!
You know, this last weekend I had my first bad primer. In all the thousands and thousands of rounds I have reloaded over the years, I finally got one. They were fresh primers too, only a few months old. I guess I was about due.
I have had about 1 in 100 in the CCI#34's and sometimes 2 in 100 in the CCI #41's. This is very unusual for me too. I think the lot might be bad or have other issues. When American made ammunition components like primers are getting misfire I begin to worry about who's in charge of Q.C.
Yeah, I know the thought, mine was a CCI 200. I almost wonder if the demand isn't affecting quality also. When you are behind in orders as far as they are, everything is running full tilt and it all goes out the door. I was actually dumbfounded, it was the first misfire I have ever had in 30 years of reloading. I hope it's the last one too.
I've been waiting to see how those .308 cast bullets would do through your M1 Garand. Thats a nice rifle...I need to get me one like that. My Ruger 300 Win Mag could be that rifle's twin brother. Very similar color patterns. BTW...I like the changes to the site.

Nothing, ablsolutely nothing beats the sound of a Garand en bloc clip being ejected. Makes me so sad I had to sell mine.

If the mould is producing a .309 bullet, why not just resize/lube to .308? BTW, what are you using for a bullet lube?

It'll shoot 1-1.5 MOA at 600m easy.
Also I wanted something a little different.

Hi could you use a Lube and sizer die to check your projectiles, that they are the right diameter before using.
whatsdoing 2 years ago
Not on the bore ride shank. However there is a man I know who makes a sizing doe for bore ride shanks.
