    Never see his like again, and its a shame the standards Fred lived by will never be reached again by our society because too many people have taken the easy way out and choose to live off the welfare state whilst providing NOTHING of their own labours.

    It is a disgrace, and a very poor reflection of ourselves that we have allowed this to happen in such a short space of time.

    RIP Fred.

  • Fred was a brilliant person, a real icon of the past. I'm from Ireland and I remember these programs about Fred. He had a fascinating Northern English accent and knowledge that knew no bounds. He is a real symbol of what is great about the north of England. A peoples man.

  • I just watched this on TV. I beleive it was 1979 or 80? I'm from Bolton, it was fascinating seeing bolton town centre 30 years ago! The church at 1:20 is now a wreck which is sad.

  • i spent 12 years as a steeplejack, and loved every minute of it, it really was a great job working on all the old churches and monuments in london, shame that as a tradfe its all but fucked now with rope acess and safety laws, and most of our chimneystacks have gone now anyway
