I'm so jealous of all you americans with HUGE pieces of land and expansive woods and stuff, and of course all of your gun priveleges compared to the wacky no-violence society we have in Britain. Maybe when I retire... idk :D
That's a really nice circuit. You should add a few novelty targets and a running deer or hog, perhaps an aerial for a few flu flu's. Love to see those on video!
3 rivers archery, I live just down the interstate from the location in ashlee indiana, its about a 22 minute drive from here, that is where I get my arrows also as well as my archery supplys its the biggest size supplyer by square footage for traditional archers though there are a few exotic bows, they dont carry but most of the best made bows from all over, and best selection of arrow heads.
Not sure if it is the same in America as it is in Australia, but when i saw your hand hold on the string i believe you were holding your bow a bit wrong. You had all 3 fingers below, in Australia and all my competitions we hold with 1 finger above the arrow and 2 below.
@hickok45 That seems fair enough, I shoot split fingers because I feel it gives more control (it probably doesn't just something I am superstitious about. Just a quick question, does holding with three fingers under make a difference to your string pull? It seems to me like it might push up the arrow a bit (again not judging just curious). Oh btw I loved your new XDm 5.25 video with the comment you made about the .40 not fitting into the 9mm, made me laugh :)
@manheap12 In the USA we have a variety of ways to shoot other than the split finger.
Three fingers under where I live is called the Apache method. There is also the two finger method index and middle and the thumb and forefinger. Some people use a thumb ring and I'm not aware if that was used by the Native Americans here. Split finger and three finger are well known here.
@TJ41238, You can use the modern plastic flights, but they wear on your bow and shelf a bit more and can affect the flight of the arrow, I guess. Unlike with a compound bow, generally, the feathers run right against the bow. Not that big a deal, though, unless you're competing in the Nationals probably.
@hickok45 Most compounds have drop away or full capture style rests (ie:whisker buscuit) so that the veins or fletchings do not contact any part of the bow or rest. This is why shooting veins off of a shelf is not a good idea. They have no verticle flex, and greatly effect arrow flight. Whereas feathers do not effect arrow flight nearly as much because of the vertical flex that they obtain.
Gunner reminds me of a dog I had as a kid 30 years ago.......1/2 Golden Retriever......1/2 Irish Setter.......she loved romping through the woods(and ponds especially). Great memories revisited.
@josephsaliba79 A broad head arrow is absolutely devastating. Bows and arrows have been used to take every large mammal that walks or crawls the planet earth.
Gunner is certainly getting bigger! And to be honest i'm glad to see you doing some more Archery also. I have I compound bow I haven't used in years I think its time to get that old thing out and get new strings on it and give it some time on the range!
looks like a reflex deflex flatbow there hickok. A long bow tends to be a bit longer ( roughly the height of the person using it, though in your case we may have to make an exception :P )
A longbow also sports a round or "d" shaped cross section, unlike your bow which features a rectangular cross section.
Either way, its a damn nice bow and looks like you enjoy shooting it. Which when it boils down.. is all the bloody matters.
I would love to do a 3d shoot with you sometime. I am a quite a bit more competitive than you though. Also you can buy new covers for your targets so you don't have to throw them away if they are still stopping arrows.
cool video - archery is a great sport & it would be great if the young generation can take it up in school or recreation centers
as for Gunner - he better get his tail out of the way
nice of the target to stay in place for 3 shots - reminds me of Palin & the phony shot she took of the elk or deer who stood in place while she reloaded - that was a laugh
I like that belt buckle. Is that design (9 bullets, one shotgun shell) a reference to the famous LeMat revolver? Although it didn't shoot centerfire...
Have you ever thought of going on the show Top Shot? I haven't seen all your videos, but I have seen enough to see that you are a well round shooter in many types of weapons. Just saying. I think you would be a great candidate and I'm sure your fans would give you all the support you needed. Take care
Nice bow and nice shootin' hickok. I tried a recurve years ago, but could not for the life of me get the accuracy results I needed regardless of the amount of practice. Maybe some bad habits, I don't know. But to put that arrow where it needs to be consistently, in the kill zone, I had to migrate to the compound bow with sights. Very few of us "archers" can shoot a long-bow or recurve with consistent accuracy. You have a gift for shooting. Thanks for showing us the Hummingbird.
hickok i consider that a recurve. longbow limbs stay more straight when strung recurve limbs curve back some like yours do.. if its a reflex bow the limbs would curve a while lot more drastically toward the target.. so you have 3 types, long bow(straight stick bow) recurve(like what you have in the video) and a reflex bow(similar to what you have but the curve is a hell of alot more and the bows are traditionally alot shorter)
Hickok, Ive watched this video three times in the past few days and am now surely convinced I need a longbow in my life. I just need to convince the wife! Great video hickok thanks!
You're terrific! Bet you haven't heard that before ;-) I have two primary focuses weapons-wise in my life right now (1) my beloved 580 series mini-14, all dressed up to look like a 'real' M14 (shoots great groups off the bench at 100 yds too), (2) my 1964 vintage "Indian Archery" recurve 40# bow that I recently picked up at the Goodwill store for eight bucks (learning as I go)! So, what do you do? You post two new videos on both!! You must have been reading my mind here in Oregon.

The wooden shafts will take out the vampires, if you aim for their hearts. Omg, you compount is huge!
I'm a little bit jealous, there's no way you could have something like this over here in germany :)

@angelonegrh, This is just one part of it. I have a longer trail over on the other hillside, but I don't have archery targets over there.

@hickok45
You remind me of the character Burt from the Tremors trilogy.... Well I love your clips and so does the rest of my platoon here in the Swedish army!
You pretty much helped me to decide what kind of firearm I should get! awesome!
