Would never miss a Clark Terry concert when he came to Europe -( even had the honour to drive him to his hotel after a concert in Nice). Of course have many of his records. I am always amazed how his musical ideas just flow - never searching - just calling on that vast reservoir of music inside his soul. Does the tone of his flugel horn add to his genius?
He's humming while playing. The style/technique was popularized & possibly created by Roland Kirk. He's the first guy I heard doing it and he was the best. Check out some of his early albums from around 1956-60.
Jazz musicianship at its best. And to think, the band ran out of money on this tour! Shows that commercial success has nothing to do with musical talent!
Really melodic solo's, damn what an inspiration these cats are.

Thanks joemaranzano and HCL991 for the pianist's name, Patti(y) Brown.

Why no ID on the pianist in the video? Huge oversight! Is it Marianne McPartland?

Does anyone know what technique the flutist is using on his solo from 2:02 to 2:10? Are those some kind of overtones?

@1979saxman He's just singing/humming while playing. Yusef Lateef did that a lot. If you do the same thing on saxophone, you get a growl effect.

@nellar2002 The "vocalization with flute trick" was attributed to a classical flutist -- IOW, a flautist, named Gazzeloni.
I used to see Roland Kirk regularly at the Half Note in NY. Dinner, drinks, for two, and three sets (of two bands,) was less than $10.

I think the drummer is erroneously listed as Joe 'Morris'. He looks more like Joe HARRIS of Dizzy Gillespie fame.
