  • love it

  • is this bark? i am looking to move mine out of its rubbermaid which had playsand/cocoafiber mixture in it and i would rather have bark but some say it is bad?

  • do tortiouses smell? someone please respond

  • @jaitchproductions not if u get the reptile ltter and mix it with the substrate.

  • Just an idea. But as a care taker of 10 Torts. Mostly Russians, I use simple dirt which I got from the Home Depot. I know for a fact many people have had mites from bark substrates. Garden grade dirt, from the home depot and all is well. No mites or nats and best of all it is natural for your Tortoise. Besides Desert Torts should not have bark. Hope this helps you.

  • i have a 1 month old desert tortoise but i have a problem. this started happening about a week ago but ive been seeing a lot of nats or fleas, in my tortoise cage. im not sure if its because its moist, if its the bedding, the fact the cage doesnt have a top on it, or even if theyre coming from inside the tank. all i know is its annoying seeing those bastards flying around everywhere. i need your help, any advice on getting rid of them?

  • @dontshootmydik If the insects you see in the enclosure are flying around then they are most likely fruit flies or nats as you called them. if they are fleas then they would not have the ability to fly. my guess is that they are fruit flies and they may be coming around because of the food you are giving the tortoise. Fruit flies are not really a big deal but in order to rid your enclosure of them you should remove any old fruit from within the enclosure or any fruit bearing plants you may have.

  • @dontshootmydik and yeah they do seem to kind of come from nowhere because they are so small. but i believe you need to find the source of the problem and temporarily remove the food. Food is the only reason why bugs or other insects will come around, because they are looking for food too.

  • @dontshootmydik Also one more thing, a desert tortoise is going to like things dry and hot. Or maybe i should say really warm. Only heat in one area. They need a place to go if they get too hot. The enclosure should not be moist. Of course the torts need access to water but they prefer dry areas hence desert tortoise. Although you should give your tort a good moisturizing every so often with some vit. E oil applied to it's shell. Also soak that little fucker when necessary. Although don't drown.

  • @MrThomasBrandon lol soak that little fucker when necessary. i actually did today, i think i made his enclosure just right or badass if you will

  • @dontshootmydik remove waste food instantly, and at next clean out spray it with killer, but make sure you clean it before letting the tort back in. i would recommend no damp substrate and would prefer wood chips myself

  • ways to small for them

  • @MrImGerman i understand this enclosure is not the largest possible environment for the torts but i do not have much of a choice considering the climate i am living in, they need to be indoors is what im saying and i can only build an enclosure so big. I rescued these torts from someone who could no longer provide adequate care for the animals. They are much better where they are now.

  • hey what type of plants are thoose and are they edible

  • @zakery9876 sorry for the late reply, the plants i have in the enclosure are as far as i know NOT edible, however the vegetative structures of the plants are out of reach to the torts. i can't remember what the exact species are of the plants but if i remember correct i think they are of the dracaena genera. The vine looking plant is a pothos.

  • ur not suposed to have glass all the way around tortoises dont understand the consept of glass

  • @andiiiandcandiii i agree with you on this one, however these tortoises have never ran into a problem with it. They see that it is there and they dont try to move beyond it nor are they afraid of it. They just seem to patrol along side of it.

  • The clear walls are not as big of a deal as you might think. They don't try to walk through them or get scared of the edge. I've recently made some alterations and they now have a better place to hide if desired.

  • thats really cool but it looks like your growing drugs are you growing drugs?

  • @scruffystop I have seen alot of tank setup videos on variouce plant eating creatures and some owners seem to grow plants inside the tank and then I scroll down to the comments and I alwyas manage to spot a silly comment (no offense) like , dude serioucly u grow drugs in your reptile tank... plz grow up .

  • @scruffystop definitely not growing drugs but maybe when they die I'll turn their enclosure into a nice little grow-op. You never know. jk

  • Wow, that's a really nice enclosure! Just get rid of the glass because it stresses them out. Other than that, you've got a really good enclosure.

  • @TheBoaConstrictor95 Thanks for the comment. It took a while to construct but they have a nice home now. The glass(acrylic or plexi-glass) is not as big of a concern as one might think. You just dont want super high walls like an aquarium because it hinders ventilation throughout the tank.

  • @MrThomasBrandon It's actually best to avoid the glass. It confuses them & stresses them out.

  • @TheBoaConstrictor95 Ohh i didn't know it was possible to perform a stress test on a tortoise...wow i really don't have any idea what so ever about anything ever at all on this earth. Thanks for the amazing and extremely useful information pal, you are so intelligent! :)

  • @MrThomasBrandon Don't be a smart-ass. I'm trying to help you out for your tortoise's own good.

Do your research about enclosures for exotic animals before you go out & buy a tortoise.

  • @MrThomasBrandon He (TheBoaConstrictor95) is right, they can't process the fact that it's see through but they are unable to walk through it and it freaks them out.

I'd call you a moron but you seem to have proved that without anyone's help. If you don't know what you're talking about, it's better to avoid saying anything unless you're trying to show off your lack of knowledge.

  • @Ramsden I apologize for the error. You must have used your telepathy to obtain that information, I was unaware you had the ability to speak with animals. BTW it's very clear that you are upset and frustrated with my knowledge and education of these animals. A word of advice my friend, stop getting in the way of yourself and avoid the business of others, you'll end up looking foolish. Even more than you obviously already are.

  • dont u think clear glass or plastic would confuse the tortoises

  • This enclosure is beautiful. Shows you care. Only thing is a hide spot is missing.

    Thank you for your video.

  • @Reason1717 Thanks for the comment. Yes you are right about the hiding spot. Upon further renovation the torts now have an excellent retreat.

  • cool set up

do the clear sides not bother the torts?

  • @jackstrongbow Not as much as you would think.

  • no glass but awesome enclosure anyway

  • no glass

  • shouldnt you put some sort of place for them to hide

  • @NewbornHippo They have an excellent hide box now. : )
