  • Definitely a cool lick. Also, major props on the On tune in the intro screen! Ken Andrews rules.

  • Which sticks do you prefer to use? 2451 Hickory or 2451 Sugar maple???

  • cool stuff

  • Lol, Mike finally broke down and got a foot cam.

  • What video editor do you use Mike? your videos get more and more visually attractive

  • Hey Mike, what technique do you recommend to work on single stroke rolls? My left hand usually gets tired after doing it for awhile.

  • Man I was at the NAMM as well and you were at the top of my list of people I wanted to meet. I went to all your sponsors but I never found you. Kinda bummer but hopefully some other time!

  • Greettings from Costa Rica Mike!!!!! I am a 40 years-old drummer and man I gotta tell you.....your videos have improved my drumming like a 10000%....you don't know yet how valuable your teaching is for guys like me that have been playing in the same way for years...Now I can say I have such an inspirational and useful tool to continue working on it...Ride on my friend..!!!!!

  • Making the move to Gretsch! Congrats!

  • MAD skills. So INSANE with his kick drum. In fact I wonder why he never uses double kick. I realise he does more with 1, then many guys can with 2, but that just makes me wonder what HE would be like with double kick. Then again if it's not broken why try to fix it. Very Inspiring.

  • You are truly an inspiration Mike. You have me doing things on the kit and practice pad I never thought possible. Thanks for all the time you put into us. I look forward to the day I meet you.

  • So that's what it is. I've seen lots of gospel drummers use it. Thanks Mike.

  • dam those are some nice symbols!!!!!

  • White Lightning! whoo.. Mike you are the man.

  • steven chen? my fav utube drummer

  • FUCK YES

  • I love how I converted from a drummer to a bass player yet I still watch Mike's videos and I haven't touched a drum set in almost a year. I feel so obligated to stay tuned because of his posative attitude and skill. God forbid I haven't played drums in forever but I still practice what he teaches with my hands and feet lol

  • Thanks Mike!

  • your low ton sounds like angels

  • Hi, Mike. Why don't you have a facebook like page??

  • So i think the 4 people who dislike this need a little more Hubaduba with a little Shakedaboom :D

  • his cymbals and drums sound amazing

  • wow i love your style and groove! subbed!

  • It's a little hubabudah with a little shiggudahboom...

  • mike dude what the hell is your splash stack made from an ozone + mb20 splash? that thing sounds so lushs really nice chops in here man

  • MIke.... I think you have been really improving massively since you been doing these videos! Kinda like playing golf... you got to see your form. Now that's education!

  • Matt Halpern from periphery uses this A LOT! It's definitely his go-to fill.

  • LOVE THE FOOT CAM

  • "Hey, what's that thing there you did between your floor tom and your stacker?"

"It's a little huble double with a little shigidaboom."

  • Meinl Byzance Extra Dry's? :)

  • So great meeting you Mike! Looking forward to talking more with you!

  • @LukeHollandDrums: Right back at ya bro. Call me later this week and we will figure out some plans for the future :)

    Peace,

    Mike Johnston

  • Woahhhh a footcam :o

  • Mike,... Hey what sample pad do you use? Can you do a video to explain?

  • that was sweet, thanks for the video mike! It was a pleasure meeting you at the NAMM show on Friday! Can't wait to start using the new pad when its out!

  • Great lick Mike. At the risk of getting off the subject or lick of the video (much like the way you explained in the beginning), what was that you did between the toms and bass drum at 5:36?! It sounded Swiss triplet-ish but I'm not sure.

  • sick improv!

  • "That's a wrap!"

  • Mike Johnston is one of the tastiest drummers i have heard.

  • haha i love that was awesomely mental :)

  • YUM!

  • What is that stack your using? It sounds beautiful o:

  • Amazing!

  • Great lesson! It was awesome meeting you at NAMM this past saturday. Really enjoyed your polyrhythm clinic. And when you asked me who was my favorite drummer there and I said you, I meant it!

  • I won't be able to feel like a drummer until I am able to do what he was doing towards the end.

  • 0 dislikes....let's keep it that way

  • Is it just me or did he get a little swoleski... unintentional rhyme...

  • Brad!! and Cobus and Mike.. same room... GLORIOUS

  • No Matter how lazy I get, every time I see Mike Beat the Hell out of his kick it makes me get up and go teach my kit a lesson... I am nowhere near mike in skill but he inspires me every time!!

  • Hey mike this don't have anything to do with the video..But what is the difference between the coated heads and the clear heads that you use i see you change them often?

  • Hey Mike!, What Cymbals are you using for the stack on your right?

    Thanks in Advance! (:

  • Hey mike what pedals are you using now adays? Just out of curiosity.

  • Mike, what size toms do you use? is it 10-16??? Seems like quite a separation but you make it sound sweet!

  • Hey Mike, do you know who Matt Halpern is?

  • That stacker to his left sounds so cool, almost like an 808 clap or something.

  • BRAD DAVIS!

  • I've always wondered why Meinl Cymbals get marked up so bad...

  • 5:37 are you kidding me?

  • Have you met Jerome Flood and Chris Dave? They are 2 of the best out there in my opinion and they're really awesome guys as well.

  • @KChowrimshot22

KFFKKFSSRFFFKFsKKFSH (Kick, FloorT, Snare, RackT, Hihat)

That's how I think he plays it in this video

    That's just what I hear/see

  • come on mike that was ridiculous D: you got way better since the last video I saw great lesson, BTW i want to know if there is a trick to get that short sound from the crashes when you put a bit of pressure on it (I tried but I dont get that trashy sound 0: 19 or 0:25 or thats because the mics?

  • u rock

  • what kind of ride is that? it sounds sick.

  • That's one sexy sounding floor tom..

  • Anyone else think that if him and Victor Wooten jammed it would be amazing?

  • That stack is pretty cool. Digging the new intro and outro as well :)

  • thanks for watching?

its been years and the pleasure is all mine !

  • is the same stacker as the last video with the "peppermint lick"

  • Your vids are becoming better each time! Cool to see, that you don't stop to develop, even you're the best teacher I have ever seen!

  • That floor tom sounds monstrous!

  • is there a part 1?

  • @kevinyo4 from about 3-4 years ago

  • Cool vid.. simple pattern and yet awsome.

And also I have a question. Dunno if you reply here, but here it comes.

The thing you do at 5:54 after that tiny little paus. Could you explain it... it sound friggin awsome :D

  • @vana2tike Me too!! I've watched it about ten times now and it's just too quick to completely put together

  • I like the way you go over a lick every way. You don't just show what to hit, you explain how to practice it, examples of how to use it, and outline the difficulties people will have.

Much better than drum teachers I've had in the past who just feel like showing off.

  • Hope my comment below makes sense...

  • Mike, I don't know if you reply on here but, I got a intermediate snare solo drum book for Christmas and I opened it up and was like..."Fuck, that looks really hard."

I can read the music but I never took lessons so most of my learning was on my own, so there are symbols that I don't recognize and, obviously, it being intermediate, it's going to be more difficult. My question is, how do I familiarize myself better with notes and symbols and how do I get better at recognizing what to play.

  • @pinkyandthesheep

I'm surprised that in your book there isn't a library of what is what. There usually is.. Weird. Just check it on google dude. Or just go to like a guitar center or something and look through their drum books and find it and take a picture of it ;]

Once you figure it out just play that stuff REALLY slow. You got this man it's all muscle memory.

  • @frogbeergolfgolf Alright. Thanks my man. I think I'm just a little intimidated to start trying it you know? But Yeah, I'll take it slow.

    Thanks again dude.

  • i just canceled my drum lessons because i didnt think i was learning enough, so congrats on getting my new primary drum teacher!

  • this guys drum solo's really has a vague drum and bugle corps snare player flavour. i wonder if that is where he started....

  • It's cool cus even I've noticed it that sometimes just really simple things sound so cool and can be fitted into so many different things. And btw this was the fastest 6mins EVARR! :D

  • Clicked like before watching the video, I know it's going to be awesome!!

  • You show a wonderful approach to teaching: it's not about forcing others to do what you do, but giving them new impressions on how to improve theirselves. Keep going, I really appreciate your effort.

  • your biggest weakness.. single strokes with foot + hand.. sound great!

  • id really appreciate a lesson on keeping time with the left foot. any little excersises or tips?

  • Cool new intro and outro!

  • Tony Royster Jr. is pretty legit

  • muito interessantes sua idéias show!

  • Hubaduba with a shigadiboom
