What a beautiful car, I hope you beat on her A LOT! I met a guy at the Concours who had a 70, convertible....429 with a 4 speed and a Hurst T-grip.....damned thing only had 9 miles on the build...I said "Did you finish it last night?" he said.."no, i just prefer the amenities of my truck with her on the trailer." It hurt my feelings, coulda swore i heard the Torino whimper "save me"
Still love your car....i used to always see it at the baytown mall! You helped me out alot with paper work on where to find torino parts! thank you! You never got to see mine cause the mechanic took too long :( I just put it on youtube at- 72 gran torino cobra vs 97 z28 camaro
Very nice. I had one, a Cobra version. It had hood pins, rear window slats, but it had the stock 429 - 360 hp and 480 lb/ft torque, I think. Rear end was around a 3.00:1 so it was not a drag car, but it would fly on the interstate. 120 mph indicated was 4600 rpm, and I once (stupidly) took it to 6000 rpm on stock tires that were probably not safe even at 120 mph. I always wished I had the CJ engine that you have. Much more fun than mine, I think, especially with better gearing.
People need to pay better attention. Would a man with this awesome of a Torino have SINGLE exhaust out the rear?! Unless I'm seeing the bottom of the shock absorber on the driver's side, the driver's side exhaust tip is right there! Dude you have an AWESOME Torino!!! Any videos of the interior? Is this manual or auto?
i was about to be so pissed if you dident pick up the camera. fuckin amazing car man. old school cars are so much better then anything made after 1999. great video. im actually re building a 87 gnx. hope to be as nice as that soon
You are probably thinking of the Boss 429. Those were a Hemi Head design and did have wider valve covers. The Boss 429 was only available in the Mustang, although there are stories about 1 69 Torino that may have been built special.
The standard 429 CJ and 460 share the same engine block, rods, and heads with the only thing diffferent being the crank and pistons. In the day (and even now) this was a cheap way to stroke a 429.... Just get the crank and pistons from a 460.
Nice ride, best years for the torino IMHO. Remember going to the scrap yard & finding a 429 CJ motor (late 70's). Foolishly, I kept the heads & didn't take the short block. Got them for scrap price!
This is such a cool, under-the-radar car. I saw one for the first time at a local car show a few years ago, and I was blown away by the great lines, but also by the sheer size of this thing -- these cars were HUGE. Really nice car.
@jroccot sorry buddy.. just seen someone here on comments say there was one exaust. thought they knew what they were talkin bout. ma bad. i was gonna say...
we knew a guy who had a 71 torino cobra with the 429 scj and 4.30 gears with automatic and i will say i have never been in anything that had as much power and torque as that thing had.it would literally smoke the tires at any speed and would bury the needle faster than you can say cobra jet.what an incredible piece of ford iron.too bad it was only made 2 years.
lol i got a 1970 torino gt with the fastback only 351 cleveland though, same paint and engine look though.
fuckin badass! btw its my first car im only a pup at 16 years old. ppl think i didnt work on it, when i spent over 800 hrs on that car... but w/e. i like it.
@herbienbrian This has been discussed in the comments several times. The car has duals. When I took this video, the right side tail pipe hanger was broken and that pipe hung down lower than the left.
ive got a 70 Torino Cobra jet "Twister Special." all original. 66k. original paint, original engine. 3.50 rear end. only 13 left. It chirps em in 3rd w/ no problem. actually i have 2. one needs to be fixed up. Wana buy one? It's FOR SALE!
@janfafard I got the vertical seals from macsautoparts. between them and autokrafters you can get just about everything for your Torino. Another good source for Torino parts is dearbornclassics.
Check out my torino, its got 27k original miles all original car, the dash and the headliner and paint everything is original 1971 fast back gt 351.4v engine.
@Macisaac29 - There are 2 tips on the car, At the time I took this video, the right side tail pipe hanger was loose and that is why the tail pipe is hanging down lower than the left side.
that car just mean the first time i got to ride in one was the same 1970 429 4speed with the pistol grip shifter in 1992 my buddy was driving it hit concrete wall and the car still made it home smoking over heating busted up but strong ass engine love it sounds great .
the owner still has the car is in a town called pheonixville pennsylvania
heyy man i had won about 2 years ago all complete just needed restored so guess what i did........com on guess....... yep i scraped it had a good motor to and the motor was just a olld junker engine.. whone of those bb 460s that was custom build bake on 1972 lol jk it was a boss 302, sold the boss 302 to the rebilders for 150 bucks
Also, sweet car man. An underappreciated classic redone to an excellent standard. I hope that exhaust rattle goes away; my '70 LTD did the same thing.
In '72, Congress mandated a variety of emissions-control mechanims, most notably the catalytic converter, which robbed power. Also in that year, the method of calculating horsepower was changed, which made those power ratings even lower on paper. In '73, a variety of safety mandates went into effect, resulting in hideous 5-mile-an-hour bumpers. Yes. The manufacturers had to do several things to meet emission standards from 72 on due to the technology available at the time.

@CaptainNarold: I feel the exact same way.........only problem is, we have all kinds of corporate interests pushing their wishes on the various politicians who live and work in D.C., so they can make their profits on whatever they want to push on us next, whether it be hydrogen, or all electric motors{yet ironically these same interests bullied GM to cancel their EV1 not that long ago}, etc. Or at least that's how I see it.
