Etho,

I think that armor only takes durability for what is actually protects. Enchantments that make it protect more don't count. This would explain why your enchanted helmet didn't take durability damage.

If you let go and click again really fast after you break a block it will break noticeable quicker though I only notice it with diamond tools. But doing that compared to a diamond pick with an efficiency of 1 or 2 with come out as the same result and even faster if you unclick and reclicked really fast with an efficiency pick

Lastsasquatch is right. Also, all types of armor and blocking etc. should absorb damage from TNT. Think of a block of TNT as a creeper. If you can't block a piece of TNT with a sword or armor, then you couldn't do that on a creeper. And creepers' explosions are affected by blocking and armor.

The reason that blast protection armor takes durability loss when environmental doesn't is because normal armor takes durability loss from blast damage, the blast enchantment isn't making it lose more durability, it's just losing the same amount as normal armor would.
