Brilliant - I've only just come across it and, as a geologist in earlier life now retired, that massive calving is almost beyond belief! Wonderful!! Awhile back, I had a brief foray into Tracy Arm aboard Holland America's Volendam and then into Glacier Bay in great weather and I videoed a far more modest calving from the Marjorie Glacier (see both in my postings on "youtube nleeder"). Alaska is truly amazing and I wish I had youth to see much more - now 87 - because what I DID see was superb.
@nleeder Thanks for sharing your story. I've had the pleasure to see Marjorie as well. The whole of Southeast Alaska is stunningly beautiful, and I'm glad you've had the opportunity to enjoy it, and that you've allowed me to share my excitement about it too.
I was fortunate enough to travel up Tracy's arm and see the calving. One addition on our trip is that the seals floating by the ship were having Pups as they went by. It was a sight I will never forget.
I urge you all to get a tour that travels Tracy's arm. Only smaller ships do so. Another exciting part for geologists is that as you travel from glacier bay to the glacier, you go back 400 years in geologic time.
