Wow-I am so impressed by the way they all sound live...they sing those beautiful high notes perfectly even without the help of all that studio technology! Love them so much...
both frank and timmy are inspiring, frank coaxed his musicians to play even better than they did before they did in his band, there contribution to modern music is unrivalled, would have liked to see zappa live, would like to see the cardiacs live again, both as good as each other, shame frank is lost to us,and timmy is ill,get well soon,
Frank Zappa once stated that he added humour to his work in order to draw people in, so he could expose them to the serious music accompanying it. His goal was not to cater to the people who already 'get it', it was to convert those who don't (at least from what I know). And of course he made a lot more money. Job well done.
I hate rating people against eachother or saying who's better than who because all musicians just add the the beauty of music. In my opinion Frank Zappa is the best composer in the 10th century and in the top 200 guitarists. I understand most of the people on the Cardiacs video page won't agree. I'm fine with that. The only album I like from the Cardiacs is A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window, which to be honest, the first listen was better than most of Zappa's...
I respect your opinion. I personally believe that Absolutely Free, Overnite Sensation, Hot Rats, Apostrophe, Overnite Sensaton and Joe's Garage are all masterpieces which simply put created the avant-garde genre. At the time of his recordings, the satire of the music was completely new. Nobody composed such complex time signatures and tempo changes which in my opinion can only be compared to that of Gentle Giant.
Sounds like the Lead Singer of the Pixies (Frank Black), covering a Dead Kennedys song with Radiohead as backing band..... LOVING IT !!!!. Hello's the the MySpace Lesbain chatroom girls, Chauncey, Raven, Franno, and Ruca. xx.
This stuff reminds so much of Zappa in the mid 70's... The same sort of brilliant musical mind at work.. I can almost see Ruth Underwood playing percussion here.
@skaterat121 It is,,, I think... Frank Zappa is a bit overrated in my view... He's a genius no doubt,, very smart man, but I almost enjoy his interviews and ideas about things more than his music. First of all, his voice bugs me, second, his humor is kind of corny.. yeah, it's kind of surreal and all, but there's still something kind of lame about it, he's not that funny. Joe's Garage was a great record, but a lot of his stuff is just wanky noodling.. sorry,,, Frank Zappa is overrated.
@loafpork I respect your opinion.
@loafpork Another example is we're only in it for the money. Released during the height of the psychedelic movement, a complete parody. Most people don't understand the work of Frank Zappa, and underrate it. Once you've listened to the complete albums a few times... he becomes in a league of his own. I have yet to listen to a full Cardiac album as of yet, but It's like saying that any pop band is better than The Beatles. Frank Zappa (and Captain Beefheart), invented avant-garde.
@skaterat121 I respect your opinion. @skaterat121 I know he's a genius, his music just doesn't appeal to me the way Cardiacs do... Cardiacs weren't just another "Avant-garde" psychedelic band... they're weird in a way that Zappa never could be, also more melodic in a lot of ways. I've listened to plenty of Zappa's work.... Fuck Avant-Garde... heh heh
There's a reason Cardiacs are sort of ignored and why stuff like Zappa is 'mainstream' psychedelia... because Zappa is obvious.. sorry, he's not that great to me.
@skaterat121 I also understand his work is parody.. he makes fun of everything. This is the thing about Zappa... He's extremely CLEVER, but clever doesn't necessarily make me want to listen to his music, or move me. There's something kind of cornball "Ray Stevens" about his humor too,, I can't quite place it, but it doesn't make me laugh.
@skaterat121 i like zappa but i have to say tim smith is above and beyond, hes ina league of his own.he can layer a song with so many hidden melodies that you can always listen to his music and hear something new.there is no comparison in my opinion.used to have a tape of jon poole doing zappa covers that were more interesting than the originals.says it all really

Well, his stage presence/persona is not necessarily his real self. I can't help it if found his act embarassing.
Also, I've followed Cardiacs for many years. Crashtv (it's a band) spent over 10 years playing (guitars & that) on the London curcuit.
Finally there's an art to swearing well. Mr Poole is no exponent of it live, but that's just my taste.
And finally-finally, I thought Mr Poole's band played rather naive music.
And finally-finally-finally, who cares anyway? :)
