After my last time replaying this game, I completely agree with this review. This game is barely average, almost shit. For a Mario game this game is absolute rubbish and should be erased from the series, leaving the amazing Super Mario Land 2. The only good thing I could honestly say for this game is that the music is really nice.
I actually gained respect for Derek after watching this. It shows that he isn't afraid to express his opinion, even if it's far from popular view. It shows he's "real" and wont pander to what the mainstream believes. Great video, Great review, despite me disagreeing with it.
I don't know man... This review really shocked me. I'm a big CGRU fan, but this here... I don't know. I love all the Super Mario Land games and still grab my old handheld from time to time go play them through. Back then all this GameBoy thing was something really big and we thought it couldn't get any better, it was just perfect, the graphics and everything.

I remember growing up and playing this and 6 golden coins. I hated 6 golden coins and always thought the sprites looked stupid. Having played and passed both though, Wario Land 1 is the best game I ever played for the OG gameboy.
This game wasn't developed by Miyamoto, the Game Boy was very limited in 1989, the developers didn't want to have repetativeness, and doesn't Super Mario Galaxy have spaceships in it? Why don't you look at Super Mario Land 2 and see how much it improved on the original? I think you were just expecting it to be like other Mario Games, but didn't consider what they had to work with and how to make it better with that limited hardware, and with this game, I think it works.

It's true that this game looks and feels very different from almost every other Mario game, but it is still a fun game. I had a blast playing it a few years ago.

Some of these complaints could be a bit more legitimate (different visuals etc from what you'd expect from a Mario game isn't really an issue), but there are legitimate reasons why SML is the worst Mario platform game, such as the poor physics and short length.
It had some good things about it, like the shooting levels, but generally, I agree, it falls short as a Mario game. But I guess it was okay for its time.

Super Mario Land is fun IMO. solid platforming even though mario drops like a rock. The fireball mechanics are weird but cool (collecting coins with it is awesome). The shmup stages are cool and the music is great. And just because its not similar to other Mario games isnt a bad thing... Super Mario World changed the Goombas entirely, put koopas on their hind legs and threw lots of dinosaurs in the mix- it was quite different too.
In the end, I think its a great game. Seuqel is better tho!

I don't think any of the main Mario games I've played are bad. Sunshine lacks polish in many ways, but it's still fun as hell. And I don't care what anyone else thinks, I LIKED Doki Doki Mario.
Derek you said it yourself, it's a fresh take on the franchise. It differs, but that does not warrant a fanboy rant. I liked this game even though it was different. Why? Because it is still a good game. It does not play exactly like the other games, but the core gameplay that made mario great is still there. Mario doesn't suddenly punch goomba's in the face, or has to collect all coins in a level to continue. It isn't the greatest game ever, but at least give it a chance
There were a bunch of other more deviant Mario games such as Alleyway, Dr. Mario, Mario & Yoshi, Mario Picross and they were all for the Gameboy. Mario Land was a decent platformer that I believe holds a place in every gamer's heart that lived as a kid through that retro era even if it has unique style and design.
I have enjoyed Derek's reviews. I must disagree with his review of this one however. It's actually not a bad game. When I played it I actually enjoyed it. It's kind of challenging but not too difficult. Derek, i think you should give it another chance.

I'm sorry, but what is this Doki Doki Mario I hear you speak of? I know of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, and of the non-Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. Also, I really laugh at the people who only JUST found out that Super Mario Bros 2 was a 'Mariofied' version of Doki Doki Panic, and that people seem to be like suddenly hating Nintendo for something they did 23 years ago.

i strongly agree with derek,
the only thing that makes this game look "good" for many of you is its nostalgia value since we all played it as a kid at one point.
But i find derek's arguments to be valid,
it looks horrible and it doesnt play nor feel like a mario game by any means,
and dont use the "well the gameboy had limited capabilities" excuse because super mario land 2 was a true masterpiece and it was also on the gameboy, other than for nostalgia this game is crap.

I've recently picked up the game again, and after all these years it still is just as fun. if you don't like it then fine, you don't have to.

Some of these complaints could be a bit more legitimate (different visuals etc from what you'd expect from a Mario game isn't really an issue), but there are legitimate reasons why SML is the worst Mario platform game, such as the poor physics and short length.
It had some good things about it, like the shooting levels, but generally, I agree, it falls short as a Mario game. But I guess it was okay for its time.

Super Mario Land is fun IMO. solid platforming even though mario drops like a rock. The fireball mechanics are weird but cool (collecting coins with it is awesome). The shmup stages are cool and the music is great. And just because its not similar to other Mario games isnt a bad thing... Super Mario World changed the Goombas entirely, put koopas on their hind legs and threw lots of dinosaurs in the mix- it was quite different too.
In the end, I think its a great game. Seuqel is better tho!

Derek you said it yourself, it's a fresh take on the franchise. It differs, but that does not warrant a fanboy rant. I liked this game even though it was different. Why? Because it is still a good game. It does not play exactly like the other games, but the core gameplay that made mario great is still there. Mario doesn't suddenly punch goomba's in the face, or has to collect all coins in a level to continue. It isn't the greatest game ever, but at least give it a chance

There were a bunch of other more deviant Mario games such as Alleyway, Dr. Mario, Mario & Yoshi, Mario Picross and they were all for the Gameboy. Mario Land was a decent platformer that I believe holds a place in every gamer's heart that lived as a kid through that retro era even if it has unique style and design.

I don't know what to make of it; it's nice to have a different perspective but i do believe you should have a less biased view on this game.
