i am vry furious that Turkey can acxt the way it wants without any consequences...Turkey occupies foreign territory, drag people away from tjheir native land and no sanction can implement upon it...there is something very wrong with the word order and the UN..i just wish one day cyprus will be unified, one country with a very well respected turkish minority..but as long as Turkey without any sanction rule can, there will be no solution
I have just recently arrived home from visiting Penera which isnt to many miles from Famagusta, the story of Varosha is heart breaking, whilst there a elderly gentleman with tears in his eyes told my family how he had a dry cleaning business here and when the Turkish invaded they gave them 30 minutes to evacuate, his wedding suit and photos were still in his home. He found it very hard to talk about, what a crying shame.
This city has definitely went under changes after 36 years... I didn't see any cars in the streets, and I definitely think that back in 74 this city was filled with cars around. This city looks better than Pripyat in terms of preservance, as less people has taken stuff and broken things. It's a shame that this city is still under the power of the turkish army, they should return it, they don't need it. Let the inhabitants of Varosha return to their homes!!
Surely there is a way to enter this place undetected, under the cover of darkness via the beach front from the water? or some type of device to detect movement of persons or vehicles? so you can go in and be aware of who closing in on you.
Surely the city has not gone 34 yrs completely untouched, most certainly troops or individuals have entered shops & stores etc & looted some of it, surely?
I know you wrote this 8 months ago but perhaps you are still interested.
I've been to N. Cyprus & Famagusta. There is a huge metal wall running along the beach, and military watchtowers on each side. I got a few pictures from the outside, but it would foolish to sneak in when guards could easily spot you with a searchlight or NVGs and perhaps even shoot you.
You could however sneak in via a street I was on that runs alongside, and by the looks of the repaired fence, people do.
and i know its dangerous, but is there anyway you could let us know if you were allowed to inside any buildings? how much of this has already picked over? there are so many secrets around this i would love to know.
there is nothing i would love more than to be in this city and explore it as it is! so sad, so beautiful. is it bad that i'd want to take advantage of all the untouched clothes from run-down high end shopping malls?
I suppose that people, from both parts with a way or another have entered and have picked up some things from the houses, i m not sure, i am greek, but i dont exlude army from both sides, maybe i am wrong i dont know
many men, women, and children we're killed. they all fled to the citys, towns, and villages to the south, they stayed in camps..
Their is no way to "sneak" in. This may have being by UN, or Turkish Army.
On land you can't obvious, with all the soldiers and patrols. Sea, their is a net what goes to the bottom of the sea, so divers can't get in, it runs off of the beach straigt down, and there are boats with sensors.
i've being to the watch tower in dherynia this is sad. :(
im looking for any pics or clips on the car showrooms that are still there can anyone help??????????? been to cyprus 6 times hopefully the greek will get their country back never been to turkey and never will
@weechap23 Since when was Cyprus Greek? Back in the Byzantine era nearly a 1000 years ago maybe! Since then it hasn't been Greek. Just because there are Greeks living there doesn't make it part of Greece.
It's incredible, so, so surrealist. 34 years as now. it's like a vision after armageddon, only structures, only announces, only cars, only legacy, no human being. Is such a bizare vision.
What a waste of a beautiful town. When will we ever learn that war and hatred only bring misery to everybody. For those who incited and caused the '74 invasion, hang your heads in shame.
Well done to varosha, a fascinating look at what was the beautiful city of Famagusta. Just hope that it will be open for everyone one day in the not too distant future. Fingers crossed everyone!

Look how trimmed the hedges are outside the church (about 5:00). I heard they occasionally let worshippers in, clearly also the gardener...

some of this footage is shot in a moving vehicle the person shooting must have been in the un or turkish military to have this level of access
