thanks. i did that but my problem is that the external instrument device seems to only receive stereo channels so i don't have the choice of setting the audio from to say channel 3, it has to be from 3/4 so the kontakt audio only ends up playing on one side of my headphones. do you know if there is a way to get ableton to receive mono channels from kontakt so that doesn't happen?
@humorless349 For the tracks that only work in on side, add the 'utility' plugin from Ableton live, and change its setting from stereo to the side that provides the sound. It will make it mono. You can make it a preset when finished so you don't have to always add them later.
i wanna output mono tracks from one kontakt studio drummer patch. do you know if there is any way to get the external instrument thing on ableton to accept mono tracks in the audio from drop down or some workaround that would accomplish the same thing?
@humorless349 You'll have to edit the output section of the kontakt plugin. At the bottom of the channel strip in Kontakt's output panel, you'll be able to see how he channels are numbered. That numbering is a clickable button as well, taking you to the 'channel output configuration. There is where you can set the "AudioChannels" to 1(mono). It is currently set at 2 (stereo)
Because I spent hours figuring out why this was not working, heres why : DO not forget to go into live's preferences and open all audio ins and outs before you try to do that !!!! I know I'm blond !!!
TO EVERYONE EXPERIENCING TROUBLE CONFIGURING OUTPUTS..! SOLUTION: Create Stereo Output Channels in Kontakt's mixer and Leave the "Physical Out" part BLANK on each. THEN go to "Save current output section state as default for" and select "All formats". NEXT you CLOSE Kontakt and reload the whole plug-in again. NOW you will see the Stereo options in Kontakt. Go to the output config. for "st.2" and now you see "Kt. st.2 [1]" & [Kt. st.2 [2]. (Success!) Set all accordingly. RE-SAVE & RELOAD again.
@unku Kontakt does this automatically now with the batch output settings. Make sure you have the latest version. Then you just open up the blank instruments and select the output template you want from the output section.
@JBlongz I was referring to the repeated problems people were experiencing (including myself) in trying to follow your instructions. I figured out what it was (it won't be apparent to you because you already have it set up)... it was a refresh-issue. When creating an audio channel like that, the VST may need to be re-loaded for that channel to be available in Ableton. It's not about the version being used because I was using the latest version of Kontakt 5. It's just an awkward refresh issue.
For some reason the 'audio from' selection in the external instrument plug-in is not showing stereo return tracks. do i need to configure the aux tracks in kontakt? please help thx : 0
@JonPrinceMusic They should all be stereo. Even if it says "outpu1, output 2, etc" instead of "output 1/2, 3/4, etc" If you have the latest version of kontakt 4, you don't have to set Kontakts outputs individually as it now has a setting to automatically align all open instrument outputs. Just set the routing of the group track's external intruments
Do you have to automate everything on the one track that hosts the plugin, or can you automate parameters on the individual tracks that have external instrument devices?
@rhymeshot Each external instrument has it's own midi channel for automation. For More plugin specific control, you'll see the option "configure" in the device setting... after it turns green, it's as easy as moving any parameter with the mouse then use midi map (command/control + m) to register with a knob, slider, or botton on your controller.
@JBlongz Thanks, but none of my external devices have "Configure." So I dont know how to take advantage of the fact that each external instrument has its own midi channel for automation. In Kontakt for example.
@rhymeshot What are you trying to automate? If its a parameter from a multi channel instrument, the parameter should have a 'midi learn' function for each channel. Also, after the clip is recorded, you can page through the automation from the edit partion of the clip box. For individual effects plugins, the device box will have the configure option.
I'm struggling with the 'audio from' section from the external instrument in ableton. Can you make the 16 track preset available for download? I would really appreciate that!
@JBlongz - Hey I could really use the preset too. My Kontakt is not giving me Stereo outputs. There's no "Conf." setting on my outs in Kontakt and in Ableton the "Audio From" gives me mono channel sources like: "Kt. aux 1/-Kontakt 5 Kt. aux 2/-Kontakt 5 Kt. aux 3/-Kontakt 5 Kt. aux 4/-Kontakt 5 Kt. unassigned [1]-Kontakt 5 Kt. unassigned [2]-Kontakt 5 Kt. unassigned [3]-Kontakt 5 Kt. unassigned [4]-Kontakt 5 Kt. unassigned [5]-Kontakt 5 etc." They're literally mono outs. The preset might help

@humorless349 If you have the latest version of Kontakt, you no longer have to assign the outputs in Kontakt manually. There is an option to Kontakt to automatically assign that way. Be sure to update to Kontakt 4.2.2

@1gothmog1 Use any channel except the first midi channel (leave it blank) in kontakt. Channels 2 and beyond will be automated on the exernal instrument channels.

Excellent Vids JB!!!! Man you are soooo cool to share your knowledge-I'll do the same when I can. I have a question. What folder are you saving the 'group' to? When I put it in Abletons Instrument Racks and drag into a project Ableton thinks I'm trying to open a new project? Can you please explain in detail where and how your saving your groups?
@any1particular I save the presets in a custom folder. You can create this where ever you want. Personally I save it in a folder I create just outside of the Live library. Now to load them, be sure to drag the file above that line I showed in the video. If you drag it below that line or double-click, it will create a new Live set (using the group track as a template)

In other words when I built the template I used instruments instead of black slots. Thanks again!
@any1particular To remote the instrument from the preset, you need to go to where you saved the chop preset, load it, delete the pad/instrument sample, then save/drag back to the preset folder. It would not be too much work to just recreate the preset since there are only 8 macros. It is good practice to master the technique.
JB, Thanks for the information but why did you choose abletons external instrument parameter, instead of using Kontakt in a track and then bussing kontakts outputs to seperate audio channels.(this is how I do it) is there an advantage to using abletons ext, instrument parameter?
@cast390 Absolutely! When you use the method of grouping external instruments, you have the plugin automatically mapped as well as record enable capabilities for each instrument in kontakt. This combines both midi and audio management from a single track. Otherwise you'll have a midi and audio track for each Kontakt instrument (that gets messy in big projects). When grouping and saving like I showed, you don't have to route the audio every time you load Konakt. Its done already!
I got as far as understandung how to route midi in/out and oudio. but when i go to assign audio the channels arent in 1/2, 3/4 etc. Each number has one channel each. Therefore, I cant route the audio from 1/2 simaltaniously to the first external instrument channel. Any ideas what I need to do to set up my default Kontakt??
@Rodentfished You need to reset your outputs in Kontakt. Make sure the output panel is in view so you can access those options. After resetting the outputs and creating a fresh set of 16 stereo tracks, set as default using the option on that same panel.
Do you know by any chance how to make Ableton and Kontakt play nice with more than 16 channels? Ableton doesn't let me assign midi output to port B of Kontakt (so nothing beyond Port A channel 16), or select aux tracks as input if I have 16 normal outs already.
@Emarvegt Currently, Ableton seems limited to 16 channels perplugin. This may change as MaxForLive matures. Kontakt can handle up to 64 midi channels, but only output 16 channels. For high demand for 64+ midi channels in one plugin, I'd use ProTool or Nuendo, but you will still have 16outs
@JBlongz: Thanks for clearing that up. Too bad there's no workaround for the 16ch limitaiton. So the second best option would be to create another instance of Kontakt more overhead processor load, but hey, if my computer can take it..
@Emarvegt Konakt will do fine with two or three instances. I usually use one for melodic instruments, and the other for drums. This is a great technique because I can also drag the group track back with all the clips and settings and reuse parts of the song by dragging them into new sessions. I recyle my drums programming this way.
Hey again :P im recording some tracks on Ableton, using FM8 in the channels nr 1,2,3,4...but the problem is that i cant play simultaniously all the recorded loops that i recorded in the same way, with FM8 from the other channels...for example i have 4 channels with 4 loops created in FM8 in the same line and verse, but when i hit the button play the intro im just aloud to play the channel marked the Arm Session Recording button may be some channel assignation but how can i do thisCan you help?:D
@Miroslawsnketr I just wanted to say that after seeing you tutorial at the beginning of my session i dont added the Kontakt 4 plugin as you do, and i just drag the FM8 plugin... I have all the Komplete 6 pack so i could whats on the tut, but and i wonder if i can use FM8 as an instrument on Kontakt 4, then assign it to a channel on Ableton...but i still dont want to do this from the beginning, if i can just modify some it will be better i guess.
@JBlongz Well i have the soution, was about the IO settings because the tracks where marked with the irange "In" selection...and to play all at the same time those have to be selected to the "Auto" yellow button. Cheers ;]
Thanks dude This is the best illustration tutorial on youtube so far that worked . Nice . keep making tutorials they are concise and easy to understand. Peace out
@biggmonk Most likely its because Kontakt 4 loads the default channel setting. You saved the preset with live's channels, but not within Kontakt itself, just yet.
So when you create your outputs like mine, you click the red "make default' button - over the bottom pane of Kontakts interface. The will load the outputs you configured. Once thats done everything works smoothly. Give me feedback on your progress.
Just create the preset then map the midi settings you desire. When you save the preset, midi mappings are saved too. If you ever want to edit them: open the preset, make the changes, then drag the group track back into the folder where you save them. You can enter a new name or overwrite the previous preset by giving it the same exact name.
I made the preset then open it and then map some external midi controls. then I saved it. But when I drag it into a new set only the "preset group" is there, no midi maps.
So this preset doesnt have all the properties of a "live set" file.
I did a test by loading up my preset, mapping the 'tune' function of the first instrument (using the right-lick, learn midi within Kontakt 4) to a rotary knob on my mpd32, then I saved it . When I reloaded the preset, it still worked. ALSO, make sure that you have the proper Live track record-enabled to control the correseponding midi instrument in Kontakt. If you need to you can record-enable multiple tracks at the same time then just work from the Kontakt window.
Wow been waiting for a tutorial on this for a minute. Before I was just sticking with FL studio because the process for doing this was something I knew how to do with FL studio. Now that I know how to do it with Ableton I will go forward a lot easier. Ableton is lighter on the system than FL especially with you start adding effects good looking my man!!
Track delay is for adding a human like effect. For example, if a clap and snare are on separate tracks, you can make the clap come in earlier or later than the snare. Its that simple.
Not much CPU load at all even when using 16 channels. Its better than opening up an equal amount of plugin instances. This is because I'm only using 1 instance of the plugin. RAM becomes more of an issue here if you plan to load 16 instruments, but I've done that on 4gigs of ram with decent results. BTW, I'm using a 2009 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz. Single core processors may not be as efficient, but thats even more of a reason to do it this way!
thanks. i did that but my problem is that the external instrument device seems to only receive stereo channels so i don't have the choice of setting the audio from to say channel 3, it has to be from 3/4 so the kontakt audio only ends up playing on one side of my headphones. do you know if there is a way to get ableton to receive mono channels from kontakt so that doesn't happen?

I got up to changing the outputs in Kontakt, but there was only 2 outputs. So I tried to add outputs and Kontakt crashed.

Just create the preset then map the midi settings you desire. When you save the preset, midi mappings are saved too. If you ever want to edit them: open the preset, make the changes, then drag the group track back into the folder where you save them. You can enter a new name or overwrite the previous preset by giving it the same exact name.

I did that but I had no luck.
I made the preset then open it and then map some external midi controls. then I saved it. But when I drag it into a new set only the "preset group" is there, no midi maps.
So this preset doesnt have all the properties of a "live set" file.
any tips?!
thnx

Ableton is lighter on the system than FL especially with you start adding effects good looking my man!!

thanks a lot! this was a huge help for me.
one thing i'm still curious about is how/when to use the track delay that you have open
ChrisRimbyLive 2 years ago
Track delay is for adding a human like effect. For example, if a clap and snare are on separate tracks, you can make the clap come in earlier or later than the snare. Its that simple.

oh ok. i used to use that feature in fl studio a lot (although it's implemented differently).
thanks again

Not much CPU load at all even when using 16 channels. Its better than opening up an equal amount of plugin instances. This is because I'm only using 1 instance of the plugin. RAM becomes more of an issue here if you plan to load 16 instruments, but I've done that on 4gigs of ram with decent results. BTW, I'm using a 2009 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz. Single core processors may not be as efficient, but thats even more of a reason to do it this way!

Maximum respect for sharing your knowledge on this one! One question: Have you noticed how this style affects the cpu load?
Thanks again and 5*s.
