  • ... how did they get the bear to back away from a puny human?

  • There was a bear. Bear was communism. Then the bear got stuck in a honey tree. So the bear was kind of a joke.

  • It turned out there wasn't a bear.

  • 33 people found the bear.

  • if there is a bear...? wth

  • Republican Propaganda and fear 101!!

  • @rebornzealot

witch the USA of course never did...

  • Is that a ninja standing next to the bear?

  • SEA BEARS!

  • The bear has been the symbol for Russia in the popular mind for at least 200 years

  • Copywriter here, this commercial is featured in the documentary Art & Copy. For all you America haters out there, I have nothing to say to you aside from the fact that you basically are the bear.

This commercial is a masterpiece. It jars you senses and makes you realize that there will always be uncertainty in the world no matter what country you are in or are talking about.

  • @schnauzerbro Look, I never said the world wasn't a dangerous place, or that America is "bad". My problem with this commercial is the implicit assumption that Americans are somehow more rational than Russians. Painting the Russians as "animals", they are seen as so evil they can never be dealt with. Was America not doing the same thing as them, proliferating arms and invading countries? Calling the Soviets animals make true diplomacy possible, and its why this damn war lasted so long.

  • @jacobthelioneater Where in this commercial is Russia mentioned at all? If anyone is calling Russians "beast", it's you.

  • @jacobthelioneater Where in this commercial is Russia mentioned at all? If anyone is calling Russians "beast", it's you.

  • @jacobthelioneater Where in this commercial are the Soviets even mentioned? It's called a METAPHOR!! Apparently you've never heard of it. What's the writer supposed to say is in the woods? THERE'S A MAN IN THE WOODS, SOME SAY HE'S TAME... give me a break. If anyone is calling the Soviets a literal ANIMAL, it's YOU.

  • @jacobthelioneater You are completely correct. But at the same time, their job was the win the election and to play on the inference here. This was a brilliant political ad.

  • @MIKESOWELL I completely agree. My problem was not with this ad for its purposes, but instead with Schnauzerbro's attempt to label anyone who disagreed with him as "a bear", and called all those who disliked it "America haters."

  • @jacobthelioneater

First off, I would like to apologize for not being aware of the bear being Russia's mascot. I've never heard that in my life and I've been exploring the world through the internet since I was 5 years old and I've never heard the term "Russian Bear".

Russians chose a bear, an animal, as their symbol and then get mad when someone uses it as an analogy for their nation and the threats it purposed on the United States? Get over it!

  • @schnauzerbro The Russian adoption of a bear as their mascot was an attempt at reappropriation. The earliest know uses of the "bear" metaphor came from the English "Muscovy Company" coat of arms in 1596, not the Russians themselves. Russians, as was seen at the Olympics, attempts to take the bear symbol and make it less threatening, as evidenced by Misha, their olympic mascot. The Russians never gave themselves the bear metaphor nor intended it to be used in this way.

  • @schnauzerbro Secondly, its about the way you use it. Even if the mascot was chosen by the Russians, it wasn't meant for this purpose. This was used as an excuse to DEMONIZE the russians and continue a long drawn-out cold war. These actions aren't really justified just because the Russians "chose" the bear as their mascot - they were not justified at all (THE COLD WAR WAS WRONG). Such is analogous to invading england because you thought the lions on their national crest were "threatening."

  • @jacobthelioneater It's not the symbol that's threatening, it what the symbol represents. And so what, Americans did feel threatened as they should have. I mean, look at Stalin and what he did to his own people, what do you think some tyrannical leader would have done to America? If there is a tyrannical leader...

  • @schnauzerbro Your argument is illogical. Ameirca feels threatened as they should have? Perhaps you haven't picked up a history book, but the conflict between the US and Russia was hardly a Russian attempt at warfare. NEITHER side wanted to release the bomb. In fact, the main point of contention was the US attempt at painting russia as a threat then demonizing communism.

  • @jacobthelioneater No its not. YOU LIKE the bear the communists and think to be prepared to stop them is wrong because once again you favor them over America because you think Communism is better.

You better be thankful for Reagan because if the Russians had "won" the first thing they would have done is liquidate "useful idiots" like you. They did it everywhere they took over.

You do KNOW the Commies murdered ten times more people than Hitler right?

  • @DalonCole I Like communism? Its hilarious that you claim to know me. I do not endorse Soviet Russia or their policies. Noone should "win" because having two countries pointing nuclear weapons at eachother is a dangerous situation for everyone - America included. The Russians were rational and knew that war was not beneficial. The only thing threat rhetoric did was escalate the war. The threats, then, were the main reasons that both nations that didn't want war were still ready to engage in it.

  • Its certainly a smart political move becasue it targets the middle. Those who hate the ad wouldn't have voted for him anyway.

  • @jacobthelioneater Bingo.

  • @schnauzerbro Americans NOR Soviets are perfect. Recognition that BOTH are flawed in some respects is neccesary to move forward. Doesn't equating an entire nation with a wide variety of people to an irrational beast reverse EVERY diplomatic trend held dear?

  • I love how we spends the entire video saying how important defense is then calls himself "peaceful." BTW, Equating entire countries with complex political systems to animals is probs not a good way to ensure peace

  • @jacobthelioneater Thankyou!

  • What a creepy awesome commercial. All metaphor baby.

  • Religion must die

  • @4zion4life You are my hero. You are one of the few people on YouTube that I pray to have kids and teach them those same ideas.

  • USA is the evil one

  • fuck reagan. the root of religious backwardness and economic clusterfuck

  • Mondale sucked. I was a kid and the only weaker offering I can remember since then was Dukakis

  • I'm a democrat too so it's a tribute to how good a commercial it is that I still remember it. And to all of you idiots who feel the need to tell everyone that the bear=ussr

  • They didn't vote for Reagan because of this video, they voted for Regan because Walter Mondale was a stupid ass! Cool commercial I think. For the time period. I was 10 and was convinced the Russians were gonna try and invade any second!

  • @bulletstopper636 they voted because Reagan was good at presenting anything..

even when it was outrageoulsy stupid

    WALTER MONDALE 1984

  • @bulletstopper636 The US was just as bad as Russia. We started the arms race with, y'know, getting the arms. Is it really fair to call the Russians "bears" but keep ourselves entirely rational? Man is the most primitive animal of them all

  • Conservative Fear Mongering

  • It represents the USSR you dumbasses

  • This video is ridiculous, without looking past the superficial meaning. I wonder who voted for him because of it.

  • thank god his soul returned back to whence it came from (hell)

  • Camels

  • and today...what animal represent the "arabs"?

  • A smart commercial.

  • Bear = Russia

  • Some people never see what's happening. May they rest in peace.

  • kill reagan

  • Comment removed

  • Oh Ronnie, where are you when we need you?

  • BEARS!!! America's #1 enemy.

  • Today, should the ad use a Komodo dragon or a CGI dragon?

  • You now realize that the bear is allegory for the Soviet Union.

  • @KentDirtbeard You betcha. I will say though what appealed to me about Ronald Reagan, how he captured my imagination was his charisma and of course the preceding president was so wishy-washy and indecicive when it came to national and foreign policy especially towards the Iran-Hostage Crisis. But there will always be political detractors and those on the Left who will say that Reagan was ruthless trigger-happy warmonger.

  • @phoenixhammeroftruth Socotra Island, was that part of South Yemen, the only Communist country in the Persian Gulf at that time?

  • @67nairb Actually South Yemen, who eventually united with North Yemen in 1990 and became just plain Yemen has a coastline with Gulf of Aden.

  • Now there's a dragon in the woods.

  • @durhay Do you mean Communist China?

  • @67nairb

I never met the poster who wrote the message about the dragon, but I am guessing that he or she did mean Communist China. That is what I thought when I first read it.

  • @Smartboy8877 The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union has been replaced by even more hostile wars and more hostile rogue states like Iran, North Korea, Libya and other Third World states. The violence and instability in the Third Wold could lead to a Third World War.

  • @67nairb

Although I am far from being an expert on war, I understand what you mean about all of the problems in these Third World countries. The thought of a Third World War is a rather scary thought indeed!

  • @67nairb not too sure on that one, Turkey will keep Iran in check if Israel doesn't. China will most certainly keep North Korea at bay, Libya is not even a contender. The Russia of today will more than likely be the catalyst for world war, with Poland taking them on, maybe China too.

  • @redyulan86 Poland is much too small a country to take on the Russian Goliath. Besides, Poland no longer shares a border with Russia on it's eastern frontier. Those countires are now the former Soviet republics of Belarus, the Ukraine, and Lithuania and so far those countries do not pose a threat to Poland.

  • @67nairb not by themselves no, with some of the former eastern bloc countries yes. Some of those countries don't want to return to being under Russia's umbrella, Poland will try to hold Russia at bay until they lose. But that whole scenario depends entirely on western Europe and how they will act on that.

  • @durhay But thankfully it's an Asian Lung Dragon from China and they don't breathe fire-lol.

  • Every time I see this ad, it makes me think we should ask Dwight Schrute what to do if there is a bear.

  • @gregblosser82 He'd say: Double post at it.

  • @TheLackofattack

Another great sense of You Tube humor!

  • @gregblosser82 bang a pot with a spoon and yell, hopefully it will go away.

  • Every time I see this ad, it makes me think we should ask Dwight Schrute what to do if there is a bear.

  • @67nairb considering that the bear is the national symbol of Russia, it's still an effective ad. I wish political ads today were as motivating, instead of jumping out at you.

  • Best political ad ever. It states the national concerns without mentioning Russia or the arms race.

  • @Emigdiosback Yeah but I knew the add was about Russia.

  • @67nairb

I think most people figured that one out.

  • @Smartboy8877 The country I should've said in my last poat was the Soviet Union or the USSR because Russia wasn't really a country but one of the 15 Soviet republics within the former USSR.

  • @67nairb

I see your point. However, I knew what you meant from the start and I am guessing that most other viewers did too.

  • @Smartboy8877 Of course you knew what I menat.

  • I know this is not what the ad meant at all, but isn't it ironic he's talking about a bear in the woods and not knowing if it's dangerous or coming out or not, then during his second term, the bear market nearly sank our economy.

  • Great ad, terrible president.

Also, the bear totally mauled that guy after the camera stopped rolling.

  • @BUSean Whad'ye mean terrible president? Reagan was an excellent president.

  • @67nairb Not really. He was average at best. The fact that he raised the debt to a level higher than all presidents before him combined had. Also the fact that he had one of the most crooked offices ever. Also I am a vet, and I see that he was responsible for selling weapons to Afghans that in turn killed Americans, but you won't admit it.

  • @battia01 So Reagan raised to a level than all the POTUSs combined. You know that for sure; huh? Where did you learn that? And while it's true that he sold weapons to the Afghans in the 1980s during their war with the Russians, how were we to know some 20 years later that those same Afghan rebels turn against and kill 3,000 Americans on September 11? Not all of whom were Afghans if I may say. We were helping the Afghans to halt the spread of Soviet Communism.

  • @67nairb Excuse me, I meant to say Reagan raised the national "debt" to a level higher than all the POTUSs combined. I forgot to add the word debt in my comment, sorry. For some reason I always forget to add important words in my comments on You Tube.

  • @battia01 Ya know? It's really easy to blame someone for the cause of a horrible event that happening in the present due to an event or events that happened in the past. In case you've forgotten the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in Dec. 1979 when Jimmy Carter was the POTUS and he sent them military aid, perhaps not as much as Reagan did. And President Clinton tried to kill Osama bin Laden and his terrorist base camps in Aghanistan and that was a failure.

  • You can't blame Ronald Reagan for what happened on September 11, 2001.

  • @67nairb

No you certainly cannot! He was long out of office and probably too old and frail to even understand what was going on!

  • @Smartboy8877 It's time for the political parties to stop blaming and finger pointing and working together for the benefit of our country. What happened on September 11, 2001 was not the fault of either a Republican and Democratic Administration.

  • @67nairb

    Very well put my friend!

  • @Smartboy8877 Thank you.

  • @67nairb

    You are entirely welcome!

  • @battia01: Sorry, but support for the Afghan fighters actually began under Carter and Brzezinski, not Reagan. None of the Stinger missiles later provided by the United States under Reagan have been used against US or allied forces and none ever will because the missiles have hard to replace components that expire after a few years.

  • @BUSean

The guy has a rifle slung behind his back (representing U.S. defense)

  • @BUSean

    Okay!

  • No one knows if the bear is "vicious and dangerous"... no ramping up of nuclear tensions there, then!

  • @phoenixbornagain @phoenixbornagain @phoenixbornagain @phoenixbornagain This is why all even remotely political videos should have commentaries disabled.

  • the bear= sovjet

  • Why can't we have this high quality of adds anymore.

  • Reagan didn't support the right to arm bears.

  • @baraxor Youre an idiot. Of course Reagan supported the Right to Bear Arms. He was an American. He presided over the Constitution of the United Staes of America. Not a Scum-Bag lawyer.

  • @curt8789

Um...please read the last five words again. Very. Slowly.

  • Best politcal ad of all time. One of the best presidents of all time.

  • religion. mmmmmmm that's odd but the bible never states treating ones mate that way. oh well must be why the bible is the real word of god and the Quran is not.

    ^_^

  • of the wife. Selective excerpts from the Koran are used to prove that men who beat their wives are following Gods commandments. These religious justifications, plus the importance of preserving the honour of the family, lead abusers, victims, police and health care professionals to join in a conspiracy of silence rather than disclosing these offences.

However, a fair reading of the Koran shows that wife abuse, like genital mutilation and honour killings are a result of culture rather than

  • Summary: In Arab and Islamic countries, domestic violence is not yet considered a major concern despite its increasing frequency and serious consequences. Surveys in Egypt, Palestine, Israel and Tunisia show that at least one out of three women is beaten by her husband.

The indifference to this type of violence stems from attitudes that domestic violence is a private matter and, usually, a justifiable response to misbehaviour on the part

  • Wife abuse has hurt many Muslim women, destroyed many Muslim families, and weakened the entire Muslim community. How much longer can Muslims afford to look the other way?

"And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and he has put love and mercy between your (hearts)..." Qu'ran 30:21

  • For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

God sent two angels to destroy Sodom for it had become a filth pit of every unclean act of sexual perversion possible (much like barneys bed room in his DC apartment ^_^)

  • Oh we are on gay issues? ok

see people like c0mbin (Satan is the old text word for liar) were also told of in the bible and how they would feed upon the flock of those good sheep seeking to serve Jehovah in the following Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

  • he told the GOP leaders during a discussion about his planned stimulus package. mmmmmm Hitler had the same view point of "its my way, no other way" that is the "earmark of a true dictator. One White House official sought to downplay the remark, claiming Obama was simply pointing to the fact that “there are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats.”

  • Media Research Center President Brent Bozell has condemned President Barack Obama’s comment about talk show host Rush Limbaugh, saying the “attack on conservative talk radio” has begun. At a meeting with Republican leaders on Friday, Obama told the lawmakers they shouldn’t be listening to Limbaugh if they plan on getting along with him. "You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,"

  • Here we would say the fruit does not fall far from the tree, but in Islam its "the blood does not drip far from the fathers knife

  • Supposing that the bear exists the smart thing to do is play dead. Bears won't eat something they didn't kill themselves.

  • And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again. In like manner shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his raiment; and with all lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayest not hide thyself.

dont get excited cOmb he did not mean boys ass

  • thou shalt in any case bring them again unto thy brother. (meaning even though its not your property do the right thing and stop it from happening, yeah lib that is real whack ^_^)

Not as whack as the korans verse of Koran 2:193-”Fight against them (unbelievers) until there is no dissension, and the religion is for Allah.” Fight until no other religion exists but Islam. YEP that's big time peace brokering

See I know the bible and the koran and you dont even know either ^_^ sad little c0mbin

  • Deuteronomy 22 is text about 1- the laws of how conduct is to be done and 2- punishment for what those who break the laws would suffer (not surprising that liberals find any concept of law and order detestable but none the less laws du have consequences detestable but none the less laws du have consequences

  • Liberals fate they can not escape: And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

"But if ... evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones..." (Deuteronomy 22:20,21)

    Fuck you and your bible.

  • @c0mbineelite I guess the proper responce is fuck you and your koran ^_^

  • @phoenixbornagain Considering I'm an atheist, there really isn't much you can say.

Sorry I don't believe in an invisible sky wizard who will take me to his magical kingdom if I believe in him.

  • @c0mbineelite mmmmm yet regardless your point was that Christianity was flawed but one tiny little snippet of text verses the Koran whose entire text is riddled with scripture of murder not in past tense but for current and future tense and yet no words about Muslims. mmmmmm anyway back to a detailed run down on what deuteronomy is all about (no need to thank me ^_*)

  • @phoenixbornagain One tiny snippet? There is plenty of crazy shit in the bible AND the Koran. Different times, different values. Back then, selling your daughter as a slave was socially acceptable. It shouldn't be used as a basis for our morals this day and age.

  • @c0mbineelite

Wife abuse has hurt many Muslim women, destroyed many Muslim families, and weakened the entire Muslim community. How much longer can Muslims afford to look the other way?

"And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and he has put love and mercy between your (hearts)..." Qu'ran 30:21

Yet google "Religion of Peace: 14 year old rape victim murdered using Sharia"

    Honor killings are so honorable

  • @phoenixbornagain

Why do you think that I support the crazy shit certain Muslim communities do? I'm not a Muslim.

  • @c0mbineelite

Wow, for a logical thinker there, that was an impressive use of Straw Man fallacy; you're better than that.

  • @GambitFox79 I suppose I was straw manning there.

It frustrates me when people say "Gay marriage is a sin, the bible says so!" yet ignore all the other 'sins' that the bible has in it.

I'll agree that the bible's main focus is love, peace, and ACCEPTANCE. Jesus taught us to love all, so why do so many christians hate gays?

  • On March 1, 1999, a federal district court in Brooklyn sentenced one Ghazi Ibrahim Abu Maizar, late of Hebron, to life imprisonment. His crime: conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction, threatening to do so and carrying the device itself.

  • we have the Muslims in Egypt to thank for the next move for America in dealing with Obama and the repressive socialists of the DNC. if only a 150000 Muslims marching on the capital can effectively remove a tyrant from office then the 3 million proactive Americans of the tea party's will move on Washington this spring and effect the same change. contact your local tea party for details

  • @phoenixbornagain I "like" the use you make of the term "Muslim" to describe people of a nation instead of using their proper name.

I guess I am just old-fashioned for having lived in an era when people used to be called Egyptians, Moroccans, Arabs, Afghans or whatever.

    If there is a meme.

  • @smokin345 wouldn't it be a terrible if someone set off a bomb at the Oscars and 100's of liberal artists who are spokesmen and mouth pieces for the liberal socialist agenda were to...well you know...die. I sure hope it doesn't happen. or anything like it say at other large liberal gatherings.

I mean with so many Muslim underwear bombers getting through these days since a musli...I mean Obama has taken over anything is possible

    ^_^

PS all those thing and more liberals have already tried AND done, and that does not worry warriors for truth, soldiers for Christ (see we have a friend that brings us back from death you don't ^_^)

  • @Revrant P.S. Sorry your unions are dying ^_^

  • @Revrant LOL ^_^ no more unions soon... liberals losing congress... japans earthquake... wars in the middle east and rumors of war... soon... no more you either

    ^_^ hehehe

  • Hard for us to imagine, but this was at a time when the Cold War was at a critical boiling point... 1983 was the first time in over twenty years that the US and USSR had not talked. Additionally, the Soviets were in Afghanistan with influences all over the world, from Europe and Africa to Central America. In so many words, the bear was dangerous, and it was in the Unites States and her allies best interest to be as strong - that meant an arms build-up we still pay for today: the federal deficit

  • @PalJoey1957 you got that right

  • ahhhh ha ha ha.

  • The real damage caused by the Luv Gov Elliot Spitzer has little to do with his career, his wife or his children.

Sadly, but predictably, the real damage caused by Spitzer once again falls heavily on the shoulders of middle class working Americans. You know...the same people that liberal hypocrites like Spitzer and his wife are always pandering to...and vowing to protect.

REP. ROBERT BAUMAN (D-Md.) On Oct. 3, 1980, Bauman, a leading "pro-family" conservative, pleaded innocent to a charge that he committed oral sodomy on a teenage boy in Washington. Married and the father of four, Bauman conceded that he had been an alcoholic but had been seeking treatment.

The news came as a shock to voters o
