Tak wtedy mieliśmy ponad 500 Migów 21 w Polsce a teraz? Pożałowania godne rządy okroiły lotnictwo do 24 Mig29 i 24 F16. Jak bronić nieba taką liczbą a może też myślą że pomogą nam alianci jak w 1939? Wtedy trzymaliśmy się miesiąc teraz wytrzymalibyśmy max. tyle ile Westerplatte - 7 dni.
MIG-21 is such a versatile plane, it´s relativly low wingspan enables it to emergency land on even the most narrow roads. and its great durability allowing it to operate in the most harsh conditions, able to operate fully with 20cm ice on it´s wings, and able to withstand repairs by often drunk mechanics makes it still today one of the most sucessful fighter plane´s ever made.
this is common thing in polish air force, at least it was back in the day. Those "air fields" are called DOL's - Drogowe Odcinki Lotnicze, Road Landing Strips and all pilots at one point did train at them. Correct me if im wrong
In Indian Air Force Mig 21s are known for being an unforgiving aircraft for their very high landing and take off speed even a small error gets magnified but very hardy frame takes the punishment easily. Still a very potent predator in a trained hand with new avionics engines n new armament
From what I recall, the MiG-21 was not an aircraft that liked going slow. Like the F-104 that was designed at around the same era, these were definitely built more for speed than slow and maneuverable flying that the aircraft of today are also capable of, and with that, came the short wings (which usually had considerably higher minimum speeds than those aircraft with a larger wingspan.)
great outlook on some of the practice from different countries, love the rear sequence showing how narrow the landing strip is and how important it is to hold directional control at high speed taxi, thanks for the video.
Actually higwaystrips aren't unused roads. They are normal, public road ready to convert into runway. On both ends there ara stands for planes, for fuel refeling etc., but road is closed only, when Air Force has exercise there.
Mig-21s are well-known for their high landing speed , by the way. It has to do with the lift-generation from the relatively small delta wing at low speeds.
It's both. The Soviets built sections of highways that doubled as airfields, complete with support areas and runway markings on the road. This helped them operate across the vast expanses of territory the had to cover.
Excuse me, I meant to add also that much of Europe has had similiar plans as well. For instance, SAAB has always had an emphasis on short takeoff and rough field capability to gain the same capability.

The guy at 2:11 nearly ran off the road...not a whole lot of room for error.
apachedann1 10 months ago
With these fast landing/take off aircraft, there s very little margin for error, as you might see watching the video.
To do this it takes guts and training.
If they were western pilots, they would only do this if the aircraft were equipped with zero-zero ejection seats...

Thats why pilots need to be trained very well. They are not allowed to make a mistake eventough it is human. So it happens :(
