Just got done watching this episode and I hated it. As a skeptic, it burns me up when writers force skeptical characters to go through extreme experiences that are supposed to show them how silly they were to doubt. Even more irritating is when a skeptical character actually seems to doubt themselves, as in the case of Captain Janeway, or outright converts to some religion they previously rejected, as in the case of Captain Beck from Starship Troopers 3.
This reminds me of how it wasn't until recently they examined the Shroud of Turin to confirm what the more rational knew all along: It's age was from approximately the time it was "discovered" in the first place. i.e. It was an obvious hoax, which would have been discovered on day one were it not for the confirmation bias of fanatics.
omg so i was watching this. and my dvd is damaged. it started skipping at 38 minutes. and i missed everything after that! i wish i could see the ending wahhh :(
I think..and this is me personally, that she was battling both her newly developed spiritual side and her scientific side at that very moment. I really REALLY loved this episode because of this moment. The ending made my jaw drop thirty feet!
So what was the Janeway thinking when she had that pained look on her face after hearing the Doctor's explanation? Was she thinking "No, Doctor, there's got to be something more than that," or "Great, I had to take a fucking snake bite just because that stupid lady back there didn't let me scan for iridium ions?"
