I hated him in Dissidia at first. I sucked with him against opponents of higher difficulty. But he grows on you after a while... personality-wise and fighting style. Just gotta fight tactically rather than aggressively. And ya gotta learn all his attacks both regular and SW(switch) style to create a consistent moveset, much like with Cecil.

Ok all jokes aside, I prefer Vaan over most FF main characters, because he's around my age, he's not depressed like others. No disrespect to Cloud, Lightning, Squall, or in some cases Terra
I think it over all fits him, after all he is a captain obvious. The difference between him and the others (Firion mostly), is that Vaan doesn't really think before he talks or does...while others (Firion again mostly) actually does think their ideas through.
I wonder if the English voice actors for the original games sign some kind of contract to do the voices for all future or side games. Its cool that you can recognize the characters just from the voice even if you've never played this game.

I thought Balthier was the leading man? And it also sucks that he didn't get included in dissidia at all. He was a charming character, always made good jokes, and even in the time of peril(end of FFXII)he made a joke of of him being the leading man that I will never forget- "I am the leading man, and the leading man never dies."
I know that Basch was supposed to be the lead, but as I said before, the story was altered so that it would appeal to a broader audience (generally teens). Do I think it was a stupid idea? Sure.
But do I hate Vaan? No. He's still a better lead and character than anyone in Final Fantasy XIII.
The writers didn't even get a say on FFXII, Matsuno's script was destroyed and he was kicked off his own project for going too oddball on it, shame considering the man is a fucking genius of game design.
Vaan wasn't even intended to be the main character, by the way, Basch was. Square twisted it into a generic sky pirate story, which is in fact, just as bad and not any less annoying than teeny angst unless you can pull it off as well as say, Skies of Arcadia.

Vaan, Bartz, Firion, Emperor and Laguna are my favourite Duedecim Characters in terms of personality, and Tactics A2 costume makes Vaan look awesome, cant stand his shirtless version.
(1) Vaan is a wonderful character. What people don't seem to understand is that it's not teen angst and whining that makes a lead character great. In that regard, let me not be the first to say that FF XII didn't really have a main character because the writers didn't want to focus one character's problems and arc above the others (this is painfully obvious in FF VIII where only Squall and Rinoa are the ONLY fleshed out characters).
The general audience are teens, so Vaan was made "lead".

(2) Sure, he's naïve, but so are characters like Tidus (yet he gets a lot of love).
I think the biggest problem with Vaan getting hate isn't what he wears or how he acts...it's that the general teen audience of today wasn't able to connect with someone leading that isn't a complete idiot who has to discover who they are.
Vaan has a good head on his shoulders. He starts the game with a goal and while helping his own country, he gains that dream.

Vaan, Bartz, Firion, Emperor and Laguna are my favourite Duedecim Characters in terms of personality, and Tactics A2 costume makes Vaan look awesome, cant stand his shirtless version.

(1) Vaan is a wonderful character. What people don't seem to understand is that it's not teen angst and whining that makes a lead character great. In that regard, let me not be the first to say that FF XII didn't really have a main character because the writers didn't want to focus one character's problems and arc above the others (this is painfully obvious in FF VIII where only Squall and Rinoa are the ONLY fleshed out characters).
The general audience are teens, so Vaan was made "lead".

@banglefaar Yes but he didn't interact with the plot at all. Nor did he have any real growth as a character. The conflict with his brother was barely even starte none the less resolved.
Its not so much that his personality is bad, its that he doesnt change no matter the situation. In other words he;s a flat character who blatantly trying to appeal to fangirls.
FF8 is hyperfocusing on two characters which is, but the other extreme, focusing on everyone but the guy your playing, as is stupid

He's kinda like Nick in The Great Gatsby, except the entire point of the book is that we see the story through his eyes. We didn't get that kinda insight into what Vaan thought so he comes of as really flat and boring to me.
That reminds me I've heard some people say that Nick is gay, or at least gay for Gatsby

@banglefaari agree with you but since every character has a fleshed out story in FF XII even if its a little they shoudlve of made Basch or princes Ashe main character with secondary we have Balthier and Fran and 3 but not least Vaan and Penelo...what do you think of that lineup the only thing is how to make the same story but ya know changin some order of sequence

I personally couldn't stand any of the characters in XII, I didn't get very far though, never was into FF back then.

@banglefaar no it's not that, it's that basch is clearly and should have been the lead, but they decided to stick vaan in for some reason. fuck vaan. you can literally take him out of the story and nothing would be lost. you can't do that with tidus, nor can you do that with any other lead character. vaan is there just to appeal to a demographic. you can say in a sense that vaan is not the MC but rather the observer, the player just going along for the ride, but really, fuck vaan.

(2) Sure, he's naïve, but so are characters like Tidus (yet he gets a lot of love).
I think the biggest problem with Vaan getting hate isn't what he wears or how he acts...it's that the general teen audience of today wasn't able to connect with someone leading that isn't a complete idiot who has to discover who they are.
Vaan has a good head on his shoulders. He starts the game with a goal and while helping his own country, he gains that dream.
That's better than rip off of Cloud - Lightning.
