Forgive me for not remebering dates, but there was a time as govt minister that Portia went to the US to try to renegotiate a deal for farmworkers. She came back empty handed. She was quoted in the Gleaner as saying 'how could a poor little black girl like me possibly stand up to those men'. I had thought we sent her as a government minister, not a 'poor little black girl'...

What concerns me is that within the past year she has shown no indication that she will do anything differently. All of us in and outside of jamaica was excited to have the first female PM but over the course of the year we have grown disaffected with her. She got a mandate when she ascended to the post of PM but unfortunately she did not realize that the country placed our hopes on her to change course.

She may be dangerously out of step with reality, but she's a charismatic loon, and I can imagine plenty of lily-livers and knee-jerkers falling for somebody like that. . And if she wins, then we're truly, deservedly damned as a people, and Portia will make sure to seal the deal.

To be an authoritarian would assume that she is able to exercise authority. From What I saw in the debates and other public appearances she doesn't seem intellecutally equipped to deal with the heavy weights in her party. On a side note, I do think if she would have cleaned house when she came in as PM the election would be looking very different right now. I think the JLP would have had a much harder time beating her.

We need someone to ask the right questions and analyze tough situations on our behalf. Smart people will exploit us, as long as they get pass Portia. The world is not simple like Bustamante days. There are many people who would love to have 3 million black Jamaicans slaving away for them. We need someone who can see the tricks from a mile away.
