Anna by Tony Mottola has an almost identical guitar part to El negro zumbon...and considering they sampled Tony Mottola numerous other times, I'm thinking the guitar at the end may be from Anna.
Outstanding work! In fact; it's a fifty storey outstanding work with a magnificent entrance hall, a free bar, 24 hour porterage and a large neon sign on top which says "Outstanding Work". Bravo!
That's kinda deep finding such samples. Fine research you did there to dig 'em out. Thanx for clearing the little pest that stuck to my head through Avalanches' music. Thought i needed a frontier psychiatrist myself !
So glad you posted this! I first heard the song about 6 months ago, and have been going nuts ever since, trying to figure out where the samples came from. Of course, knowing the source for some of them makes it even more freaky than it already was :-)
Thanks a lot for doing this, I had the guitar part stuck in my head today and I wondered how the hell I would find out all the samples used in this song. Rick rolled and Chocolate rain aside, It seems youtube is a great educational resource.
"To an optometrist!" at 3:55 in this video is from another Wayne and Shuster recording, "A Shakespearean Baseball Game". Search the title on YouTube, go to the video and skip to 6:15.
Also, I've got a feeling those heavy drums at 2:15 in Frontier Psychiatrist are sampled from Eddie Bo and Inez Cheatham's "Lover and a Friend". (also sampled by DJ Shadow on "Brainfreeze")
I also found the sound which is a horse.Comes from Mel and Tim's Good Guys Only Win in the Movies. Can be heard within El Negro Zumbon and the dialogue.
I know this might be a stretch, but I feel as though the parrot woman at the end could possibly be Virginia Belmont. It really sounds like her to me--not to mention, she's known for her famous singing and talking birds.
I am just amazed not only at the amazing samples put together by The Avalanches, but also that you found them all. Amazing job and it would be criminal if The Avalanches did not release another album.
Excellent work here, Rickydown. Do you know what the sample is following Flip Wilson's 'promised my girlfriend' speech from "Riot Suit" on 'Frontier Psychiatrist'? It sounds similar to an Ennio Morricone score.
The horse sound in "Frontier" and "Stay Another Season" it's by Mel & Tim's "Good Guys Only Win In The Movies" from their 1969 LP of the same name. The same sample was used by Cypress Hill's "Insane in The Brain"
Here's some info on the samples from "Frontier Psychiatrist", revealed by The Avalanches in an interview.
There were 37 individual spoken word records sampled on the track. Some things sampled was a golf instructional record; a Christianity record; and some "Reading for the Blind" tapes. I'm presuming the golf instructional record might be one of Arnold Palmer's golf instructional LPs.
This is sort of a random thing, but since you said Summer Crane is next, it reminded me. Are there two different versions of the album out there? One of the prominent samples used on Summer Crane and Extra Kings seems to be missing on my copy of Since I Left You (mine is in a digipak). Always found it sort of odd.
@WannaTradePants Yeah, there are different versions that were released in different countries, because some samples couldn't be cleared for other regions. The original Australian issue is in a digipak and the catalog number MOD CD 009 (I forget how many zeroes there are but the number is all 0s and then 9 as the last digit).
Hey just wanted to say I really appreciate you doing this!
This has got to be my fav album ever, and hearing where the samples come from makes me appreciate even more. Whereas usually when you find out where a sample came from, it makes the song containing the sample shittier, cuz its not even really flipped or layered or anything.
At last! Someone who knows what he's doing. Was the teacher/little girl one unfindable though? ("Can you think of anything else that talks...") Great job though.
