I think the most is lost in the very poor video and the poor mono sound... Volodos is always a positive surprise to me. I am grateful for any single video I find about him.
This performance is from Rachmaninoff's own revised version of the piece he did around 1940 (and also recorded himself!). He plays pretty closely to the composer's own *revised* version of the piece. Intestingly, you would think Volodos would have done it similarly to Horowitz...
This is an interesting performance, but what is even more interesting is that this guy is clearly making a good deal of this up. Maybe he is trying to do a variation, but this is not the peice Rachmaninoff wrote. This performer has ignored dynamic markings, and more improtantly changed notes altother on MOST of the peice.
Kinda wanna say: "Bet you thought no one would know the difference, but next time, memorize what the composer wrote, it sounds better."

I'm sorry, but as much as I like Arcadi Volodos, I really dislike the way he played this.

Beautiful!!! At the end he's playing Bizet-Volodos Variations on theme from Bizet's Carmen "Aragonaise" ... Do you have that complete video?

Don't send this comment to the ground cus this is a legit comment.
There is a TON made up here and very unusual for rach. Still a nice rendition tho. Not for the first time listener of this piece.
