When I upgraded to 3G, I can definitely tell the screen was more yellow than my old first generation iphone. I read about it online, and tried the "upgrading firmware" thing, but that didn't work. I hated how it looked, but I learned to live with it... Until I noticed a dead pixel. I went to apple, got it exchanged and now my new 3G doesn't have the yellow screen! That tells me that it wasn't intentional because not all 3G iphones have yellow screens. But anyhow, I'm happy now. No more yellow!
There are 2 color calibrations of screens floating around. One with a green or yellow push, one with a more pinky vibe. You can instantly tell by looking at the blue menu bar at the top.
This was an intentional decision by Apple. They increased the temperature of the iPhone 3G's screen, which makes the colours brighter and more sharp and also allows deeper blacks to be displayed. It also gives it a bit of a mellow look but only when your looking at pure white.
More colourful? Yes. Sharper? Hmm, I'm not convinced. However, I do think that screen in an improvement. I'd just like to see Apple provide control over the colour temperature.

Both superior to the 2g IMO.

You connect your iPhone to the comp. Start itunes and push restore in iTunes.
