Epica is awesome, I love them and these songs are two of my favorites. But live Simone, despite her amazing voice, looks like a statue and lacks of movement on stage.
I think she's going too fast. She's still young and not very trained in the classical field yet. I've been told by many friends who understand singing techniques and they say that she's trying to hit a lot of notes that are yet too high for her. She is improving a lot, but I think she's trying too had and going too fast. I'd take some more time and take it easy
@arturesteve I think she's doing just fine considering that they've been on tour for the past half year. She's probably tired, I've heard her hit the notes just fine in other live shows.
@arturesteve Well I think that she has improved a lot, now she in singing opera (wcich I personally like so much) but at the beggining of this song she sings to high. maybe this is the song in which I see her singing at the highest notes. we should give her more time and in a couple of years we´ll see SImone singing proffesional opera and we all know how SImone´s voice can improve and so fast
Oh my god, I sing classically and it's almost painfull to listen to how GOOD she sings those high notes. I can't believe she couldn't do that only 2 albums ago!
I have to disagree with you on this‚ half the time she's forcing her voice and she can't properly hold her notes (the bit around 3:50 is just hopeless)
Also‚ she's a bit off-rythm. Don't get me wrong‚ I love the music and the vocal lines‚ Simone just kind of screws up live
@Pheobus3309 I know it's difficult to sing these parts (I know a fair bit about semi-classical and classical vocals) but she just can't do it and you can say what you want but there's no excuse for writing music you can't sing, that's plain stupid
Think of it this way. Tarja can't even keep up with the high notes. Sarah Brightman, a songwriter, Broadway artist, and the world's best selling soprano can't keep up live. Erik Karol, a frenchman in Cirque du Soliel's Dralion can't keep up with the notes live.
And further more she didn't write the album. She's just the singer. Amanda wrote the lyrics and Coen wrote the music. If you don't like the live recordings simply don't complain. ^_^ Enough said.
@Pheobus3309 I know for a fact that that's not ture, amanda co-writes the lyrics and she's simone's vocal coach but she does not write all the lyrics, if you had had a look at the booklet you'd see that the majority of the lyrics are written by mark and/or simone and the music by markwith help of everyone else. Simone however writes her own vocal lines and is therefore responsible for what she has to sing. Research before you say something like that, these are commonly known facts...
Now you sound delusional. She writes her own vocal lines however... They get changed as the album progresses. Every songwriter does that. And I ask again... If you don't like it, why do you watch? You sound to me more of a trolling, obsessed individual. She's not perfect so why complain that she isn't? No being on the planet is perfect.
Of course her vocal lines get changed but in the end she's still responsible for them and for her ability to sing them. And again, read! I clearly said that I do love the music and I do like the album on cd, I'm just disappointed that it's nowhere near as good live (as opposed to the older albums which are even better live)
And honestly, personal insults? Just because I give my opinion which happens to be different from just mindless adoration...Way to go dude
My opinion about you isn't a personal insult. I just think you're a little too obsessed. I don't ask much from a band even live. They have the balls to go up there after doing how many shows a month including vocal warm-ups, rehearsals, TV talk shows and the what nots. I think you're beating a dead horse here by saying that the live performances aren't matched to the album. You and I BOTH know they won't. No one can sound as good as they were on the album without their voice being put in a box.
For me the magic behind a band disappears when they can't do it live. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as on a recording because obviously that is impossible but it has to be good, I don't know about other live performances because I haven't seeen that many recordings but when I saw them live I didn't like the new songs and this recording is just anything but good imo...
And as for research that you DIDN'T do, Live is different than studio recordings. So your point is still moot. Furthermore I'd like to see you do those songs better live. Frankly Simone has the balls to push the envelope and that's what makes a band a band. Pushing limitations and learning in them. ;)
Ofcourse live is different from studio recordings, and again read what I write, I just said that I prefered the other albums live.
As for me singing the songs, I'm not a soprano and I don't pretend to be one, I fucked up my voice by constantly forcing myself to sing higher than I could which is why i'm quite concerned about this. And what makes a band is a common passion for music and the will to create music and share that music, not pushing your limits. that makes a daredevil.
If you don't push the limits you sound dull and it's like the songs are repeated. Many bands like Amberian Dawn is suffering with this. I loved River of Tuoni, but their newest album is like a repeat. Same with Sirenia.
I don't listen to either of them so I wouldn't know, and ofcourse you ahve to reinvent yourself but that isn't what makes a band, you need a passion for music as a solid base. You can be as innovating as you want but without a common passion for music you can't form a band.
They've already formed the band... I think you're missing my point. Prime example. People get bored if the band sounds the same after their first albums. Many many one hit wonders, but their newest stuff... Sound like their olders stuff. This is why they hardly sell albums like they used to. Just like an author. Stephen King got boring after Dreamcatcher because it had many many similar scenes from his book IT.
I get your point, you just chose the wrong words for it, you mean what makes the success of a band and you do have a point there, but you shouldn't push yourself too far in one go and I'm afraid that's what they're doing now. I don't think you quite understand that I'm more concerned about simone's voice than anything else, he has said in several interviews that she doesn't do vocal warm-ups and if she keeps on stressing her voice like this every single gig she might just permanently damage it
As does every soprano. I've heard her sing higher than in this video. Illusive Consensus is an example of it. I'm not concerned about it at all because she pushed it with that song in the Phantom Agony. I'd say give it time and she might surprise you.
@Kilicka123 She definitely does have her good moments but they are becoming quite rare, maybe she just isn't used to the new songs but idk, we'll see I guess...

Nothing in this world is flawless, but she hits high notes perfectly :)
