This is so awesome!!! I also play the viola and I hope I can play like u!! I personally think the viola version this song is so much better than the violin one...^^
Good job :D my mother brought me home a viola thinking it was a violin and yes I was kinda disappointed but I'm still willing to learn so do you have any video recorded lessons? If not can you do some because it's really help :) I'm 13 so I have a lot of time to learn but I need that sort of, let's say, Boost :) thanks!
@HK2UKBABY The viola is a fantastic instrument, and is in no way less than a violin imo. I don't have any video recorded lessons at the moment, but there are quite a few people such as professorV who have great technique and can teach very well. Although, I'm also happy to answer any questions you have and in the future, and put up guides for specific songs if people want!
@8Amaterasu8 thatd be great to have some tips, i was hoping to recieve a violin because i wanted a more energetic sound because the viola being 5 tones below? i was a bit disappointed knowing i'd have to learn the extra clef but yeah i'll do my best at what i have and check proffesorV out :) and again, Good job :)
@HK2UKBABY DO NOT PLAY THE VIOLA! I am a classical musician and have been playing for almost 10 years now and I am WARNING you that starting on the viola is a HUGE mistake. There is almost no good repertoire for the viola, violins get all of the good melodies in nearly every orchestra piece, and it's just a boring instrument to play, even if its tone is more beautiful than the violin's. Start on violin, master it, THEN switch to viola if you still want to.
@AbsoluteZ3R0 bullpoo, thats horrible advice, although violas do get the harmonics a lot, orchestras are nothing without them. They sound better AND you can almost turn into any arrangement better with the viola.
@SuperDracoHawk It's actually not horrible advice, and the fact that you didn't refute any of the points I made proves that my advice is rock solid. And actually, if you take the viola part out of any orchestral piece that doesn't exclusively feature a viola melody, the difference is literally almost unnoticeable, so you're wrong about that. Viola does sound better, but most of the best violists start on violin anyway. I don't have to repeat my previous points, everything still stands.
@SuperDracoHawk Also consider that I am speaking from nearly a decade of experience as a classical musician who majored in viola performance. I'm not just talking shit here, but playing viola instead of violin or cello is probably the biggest mistake I ever made. Actually, maybe it wasn't a mistake, because if I hadn't realized how shitty of a career it would have been I wouldn't have switched to composing.
@HK2UKBABY Furthermore, the viola is much more difficult to play than the violin as it is an acoustically flawed instrument and too big to be played with natural comfort. It is the least respected string instrument and finally, most violists are terribly obnoxious people. For the love of god, return that thing and get yourself a violin. By the way, if I didn't mention this before, I AM a violist...
@HK2UKBABY i think violas r better then violins cuz u can go just as high as a violin, and u also have that lower string that violins dont have. so there better, in my opinion xD
@malon1218 They look very similar, so lots of people get them mixed up. A viola is 1+ inch bigger than a violin, and is tuned a fifth lower with strings from highest to lowest A,D,G,C compared to a violin E,A,D,G, giving it a lower range.
But ignoring those technical things, a viola is usually described as sounding more mellow and sonorous.
@8Amaterasu8 You Look Like A Douche, Great At Playing, But Im Just Throwing It Out There........ Kinda Look Like Youd Talk Shit And Then Not Do Anything
You also probably get this alot, but do you have the sheet music. (I know, I saw in some comment that you said you did it by ear and may convert it to sheet music in Alto clef.) So I was wondering if you had done that. :)
@Accuni Hi there, I did transcribe it quickly (and a bit inaccurately) but it should be good enough to serve as a guide. I put a link to the sheet music (in alto clef) in the description box, if it isn't working, let me know =)
@32darkness Hi there, that would be super cool to learn this in a music class haha, I would guess this song to about grade 4-5 AMEB level or so, the double stops are not too tricky and there are few technical bits - although your teacher would prob be able to give you a better idea about how hard it is for your system =)
Sorry for the wonky sheet music, I should probably transcribe it properly! (but basically the timing is very flexible)
wonderful work, I'm interested in playing the Viola, how do you keep your left hand balanced? I tried playing my sister's violin and I'm either spending time on holding it up or playing notes, can never do both, is there a special technique for this or just practice?
@kessiepaintball Hi there =) I haven't thought about left hand balance for a while but personally, the violin/viola is supported mainly by my chin/clavicle and the neck is supported lightly by my thumb/index finger. I think if you try to hold it with your left hand, you might find it hard to shift fluidly and quickly.
In regards to practice, I think it would be a good idea to just hold it relaxed, and then introduce notes once you are comfortable with weight distribution. Hope it helps =)
@Shinainaru Haha, my cello playing would be horrible, although I love the cello sound so much. You still impress me by playing just about all the string family =D
@9000failurez Hey there, I did this by ear. But I'm happy to quickly transcribe it down for you? If you check back, I'll put a link in the description some time over the weekend. I guess I better put it in alto clef unless people want it up a fifth and in treble clef =)
Came back to watch this again, and just noticed you put part of the Link's Awakening overworld theme in there. SICK. or maybe it was tal tal heights...
Which do you prefer the viola or the violin? What sets the viola apart from the violin? Is there a difference in tone or range? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I'm not a violin player, therefore, I would like to know from a pro like you. Cheers.
@kaputasri Those are some tricky questions, I'm no expert but:
I love the sound of both instruments, they are from the same family for a reason =D - but If pushed I'll go for violin. There is a difference in both tone and range, the range for viola is a 5th below violin, ADGC instead of EADG. Can write about the tone for pages, but basically I love the lower strings of viola and the top strings of violin, for me they represent two equal and distinct qualities of the instrument. =)
Very nice! I love the sound of a viola for a change, and all the little grace notes you added make it really special. Your mic actually seems to capture the of the viola better than the violin (as far as I can tell). Is this influenced by Aivi's arrangement?
@docnanomusic Haha yeah, the viola really is a nice sound, when I get one I hope it sounds this good and recorded better it would be crystal clear and more sonorous. I haven't heard of Aivi's arrangement, must go and listen!
@8Amaterasu8 Yeah, go to waltzforluma's page and check it out, she posted it in March of this year. Actually, I think I'm just hearing influences from the Link's Awakening version in both of your arrangements. I didn't realize it because I'm not as familiar with that game.
Do you usually play viola Chirs? Or did you just borrow it and tried to play it....because I know that experienced violinists can get hold of a viola and get used to the wider note spacing and the size in a matter of minutes O_O. Great cover and you have an awesome laptop mic....you prolly shouldnt have bothered to buy the other mic if the default one from your laptop is so awesome XD
@Arrow9100kj Thanks arrow, I borrowed it for a day, had a look at my friends before ~5 yrs ago, but this was my first time playing a song =) I did have to play it a few times to get more used to the viola! (not that I'm a great violaist or whatever)
And yeah I was lucky that the room I was in wasn't too bad - but recorded properly, it would have been so much resonant and mellow!
wow, what a beautiful sound, it's so different from the violin. i don't know much about strings so i'm a bit surprised that you can just play viola, i thought it would be a different instrument to play or something.
@Verdegrand Haha yeah, it really is a totally different tone, compared to a violin - even though 3/4 of the strings are the same. Yeah, the viola is a different instrument, with different spacings, and a different approach to playing, but viola and violin share a lot of characteristics also =D
Nice rendition of one of videogame's most famous themes! :D
Also: I love the video title - I'm surprised by how many people don't know the difference between a violin and viola, going from comments in other videos I've seen. :P
