"KDE needs to improve their performance more and more to run it in older processors than Intel's Core i7."
You said that it runs slow on an i7? I have an i3 but every other KDE works well with mine... 1TB HDD, 6GB RAM, 3.2 GHz Dual-Core *4 CPUs* and everything is perfect for me except the graphics card, which is Intel HD Graphics
I have more of a high-end computer so I need not worry about how much resources it takes up or how much "Slower" it is compared to GNOME, because compared to Windows, it's fast or around the same speed, which is good enough for me :D
My advice to anyone who wants to try KDE is don't use Kubuntu... or worse, Ubuntu with KDE installed on top. Kubuntu is one of the worst KDE distros out there.
Try OpenSUSE, PCLinuxOS or my favorite... Arch Linux.
I tried installing KDE concurrently with GNOME on Ubuntu 10.04
I'm never doing that again. KDM took over my cursor and desktop effects so that when I logged into GNOME nothing looked right. There were too many clashes for me to bother sorting them out. Now that I've uninstalled KDE I'm still seeing the kubuntu splash screen when I boot.
Gnome is fast but looks like "made in 1998".KDE on the other hand has still some issues with plasma being a bit choppy, but its a much more modern approach to a UI.
With Compiz-Fusion, why would anyone want KDE ? Gnome runs Liquid-Smoooooth on my 8 year old AthlonXP 3200 and Nvidia 7800. KDE sorta does look Nice, but this video made me glad I never installed in HAHHAHAHAH
I run KDE 4.3 on a laptop that has a crappy Intel GMA gfx card and only a 1.3 GHZ single core Intel card, no speed problems. In fact, in my personal tests, KDE runs faster than the newer Gnome's. Though I do agree dolphin is a tad slow, its easy to replace it with thunar though. The main thing I have noticed, Gnome does not use the gfx card as efficiently, but it relies less on ram and more on the processor, most of KDE's things sit in ram.
did you tried to start dolphin or konqueror with -graphicssystem raster ? It seems you have an nvidia, and for me, this trick makes qt apps to redraw 20x faster.
on virtualbox, with everything max, on my computer, I tried Gnome ubuntu (ubuntu it's self) and it runs PERFECT with a FEW defects!!! KDE on ubuntu still reminds me of the slowdom and hardness of use on Windows Vista, and STILL can't log on to ROOT no matter what you edit, which makes it hard to use for n00bs.
I used gtk-recordmydesktop. Remember to add the computer info (if possible, with KInfocenter).
Obviously, in my AMD 3800+ X2 & 7950GT (openSUSE 11.2 32bit) and in my Intel Q9400 & 8400GS (openSUSE 11.2 32bit again) it's a bit faster than in this video, but not faster than GNOME again. Dolphin needs to be more faster, and the same for Konqueror and KInfocenter.
Lol Mine runs fine (faster then Genome) And theres a reason why 4.4 is still in the Kubuntu backports but as for Kde 4.3 that I'm running right now flys. Also I have tried 4.4 and it ran faster then 4.3, But linux mint seems to run a bit slower for me and G-chrome didn't seem to work on mints kde release. Well theres my two cents, Oh and on a side note I'm running an Intel core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz with an ATI HD 4570 graphics card
I don't think it's KDE's fault, I think it is related to the optimization flags used in gcc. Perhaps the version in ubuntu was optimized for low memory usage instead of performance.
Yeah! It runs faster in my Pentium II. I think that currently hardware is slower than old hardware, so I will go to buy a Spectrum to install KDE 4.4, I sure that it will runs very fast. ¬¬
IMHO Ubuntu-KDE (a.k.a. Kubuntu) is the worst KDE-distro of the knowed main distros. But as I say at the video-info, I also tested it on openSUSE 11.2 with similar result.
@usryutub Sounds like someone configured improperly. SUSE 11.2 runs faster on KDE than GNOME for most people, I have installed it on countless computers. Most speed problems are caused by KDE's window manager though, if you have that problem, before you log on hit session type, KDE 4.3(openbox). That should give you a huge boost without loosing all the compositing.

In OpenSuSE GNOME is far the slowest.
miopizza 1 year ago
@miopizza Different themes have different performance. Try it with the same theme: h t t p: / / gnome-look . org / content / show.php ? content=86717
Probably GNOME's default theme (Clearlooks) also will be faster than openSUSE's theme, like in Ubuntu.

I will try it.

Try Archlinux and you'll see your laptop fly, on my P4, with kde 4.4 its freaking fast!
Archlinux, Sidux and Fedora= Fast
(k)Ubuntu= slow and buggy
Ubuntu is better with gnome

The "system:/ KIO-Slave" or "Gnome's computer:/" doesnt have any sense on a Unix-like system. Maybe that makes sense on a windows system.
,,, and since 4.4.2 version is a lot faster, there's is nothing to envy with gnome

@usryutub the program is recordmydesktop if using gnome you want gtk-recordmydesktop, if using kde you want qt
j800r 1 year ago
if you're interested in speed and functionality, why not openbox? that's lightning fast and can be heavily customized

No. You can install it, but it doesn't work properly. :-p
