They should have kept this in because I thought it was a bit double standards that Robert could marry Lucy! And I wanted Kernel Brandon and Elinor Dashwood to get together!!!! Did the Kernel Brandon and Marianne get together?
I know this is a deleted scene, but, where was it originally supposed to fit into? After Edward goes to the Dashwood home to tell Elinor that he wasn't married to Lucy? Or when???!!!
@karyzhemm I realize this answer may be a little late, but it's right after he proposes to her. I guess they go for a walk afterward. It was smart of them to cut the scene though, people would have freaked out.
LOL this scene is so funny. They are so cute. I love the movie as it is, though, so I'm glad they cut it. :) I just have to say, I don't know why people say the way Edward was portrayed in S&S 2008 was a better depiction of Edward. THIS is the perfect depiction of Edward.
I LOVE this scene :) And I firmly believe that Jane Austen would have written hot and steamy kissing scenes if she wasn't held back by propriety. After all, she originally goes by "A Lady". Back then ladies didn't talk or write about a scene like this :)
I always forget I spoke to Hugh Grant on the phone once at work (cause he was calling a family member who worked there). I never remember that! They should have left this scene in. I think it made sense too since I remember thinking Col Brandon might end up with Elinor (for a little while anyway)
you are right! i have watched this deleted scene countless times and it never seemed complete. it just didnt match the emotion of the rest of the film. I suppose they didnt bother to add music because it didnt make the final cut. nice job!
I can see why they cut the scene, and I'm happy with the ending. I mean, canon D would've literally ruined the movie for me. But I just love the line "I shall not forget attempting to thank him for making it possible for me to marry the woman I did not love while convinced he had designs upon the woman I did.... do."
@OpinionatedGeekGirl Why on earth not? It's not like engaged couples did NOT kiss in Regency England - sure, Austen never outright mentions it, but surely descriptions such as 'he expressed himself as sensibly and warmly as a man violently in love can be supposed to do' could include kissing?
Or did you mean that while couples may have kissed, it's not true to the spirit of Austen to show it when she didn't? I disagree - a kiss at the end is satisfying, and not an anachronism, so why not?
@ChocolateIsMyDrug This goes back to the matter of the new Pride & Prejudice where North American audiences were the only ones to see a kiss between Elizabeth and Darcy at the end; no other audiences saw it. Why? Because Americans need a kiss to believe two people are in love (I'm American, by the way). The reason Austen never wrote expressions of love or kissing scenes comes from two reasons. 1 Austen never experienced it and thus didn't write about it. 2 Austen thought love was to be private.
@OpinionatedGeekGirl The American ending of P&P was ridiculously cheesy, and wasn't based on anything in the book - therefore I think it felt out of place and tacked on. But kisses like the ones in the new 'Emma' or in say, Persuasion '95 or NA07 don't feel non-Austen to me. What, in the books, goes unwritten but subtly implied between the lines (come on, after they get together, as long as Mr Knightley's at Hartfield, Emma's 'fever' continues!) is shown in the movies.
Let me set this straight. Jane Austen actually fell in love with a man named Thomas Lefroy. they at one point planned to run away together to get married since they both didn't have enough money to support their families. anyway, most of what Jane Austen wrote was based on her LOVE for THOMAS LEFROY! get it right!!!
@lesmizwicked55 Actually that's a rumor that has been shot down multiple times by his family. Don't believe everything you watch in an Anne Hathaway movie. Yes, she did meet Tom Lefroy and it is very possible they flirted but that's all it's been proven to be. And you are not understanding me when I said what she experienced. Even if she experienced love she did not experience public displays of affection like in this scene. Thus, she did not write about them.
I think it might have been deleted because it wouldn't have been acceptable in that time to kiss someone publicly, even when engaged and on a desterted country lane. Plus it doesn't really add anything to the story, which you have to admitt, was getting pretty long by this point. However, I do love it, if just because it shows how good a couple they are.
@actress4life777 I was listening to the commentary and Emma said it was because it took away from the flow of the scenes. (It was supposed to go in between when Edward proposed and the marriage of Marianne and Brandon.) The proposal built energy up and the kiss sort of knocked it down before the marriage.
I like this scene a lot!! And its actually very close to the book... theres a lot more connection made between Colonel Brandon and Elinor in the book than in this movie version (by anyone but themselves that is lol)
Colonel Brandon and Elinor *hoping some one was thing of that* i wasn't the only one thinking of that. if you watch it silent to anybody new they would think of that.
Yes this is indeed a lovely scene, (especially with the addition of Pachelbel's Canon in D playing in the background) but I still feel the scene with Emma and Thompson when she bursts into incontrollable sobs at the end, really brings it home that she thought she had lost him. Thanks for posting.
Emma Thompson is almost exactly the same age as Hugh Grant.I do think this would not have worked anywhere sequentially in the movie, and they were right to cut it, but it's still very nice to see. I love the scene.
He's a classic Austen hero, isn't he? The way he hesitates and apologizes and very nearly asks her permission before he kisses her. It's so sweet. They really should have kept this scene!
@TheRealityGeek Wow...I definitely agree. This would have been an Epic ending scene! They should have kept this one, especially with Pachelbel playing in the background. I can even see a pan-out shot with those two on the bridge and a very dramatic "The End" appearing in the lower-right corner of the screen.
omg i dont know why they would delete this scene. its so romantic. actually i think i know the reason now lol obviously edward wasnt exactly romantic in the novel.
i really like both of these actors. but i really feel they dont fit this movie... or the parts they were given. something feel off about it, even though they do a decent job at what they were given
@pfft310 i have also thought that emma thompson was bit too old to play elinor (she is suppose to be 19 or so) but then again i cant imagine S&S without emma thompson
Oh, well she protested when Ang Lee said SHE should play Elinor. But he wanted her for the role so bad, that he suggested her age be made to 27, so modern audiences could relate to the spinster aspect better.
I love that scene it is so perfect and the acting is so brillient! i think i spend most of this movie swooning over the men..... time well spent i think!
Oh my GOODNESS!!! There was an actual kiss and they took it out?! I don't know whether to howl or cry. The rest of this scene was also a perfect testimony to the tentativeness and subtle humor these two displayed when they considered the absurdities of the world around them. One can just imagine that scene between Edward and the Colonel, with the poor cleric repressing his wounded feelings towards the man he thought had ruined his chances. Too bad we couldn't have witnessed that scene as well.
