@billny33 The current Sportscenter sucks, but "pretentious news show" is the LAST thing I'd use to describe it. The only way I can describe the current abomination is "a mess." It doesn't resemble anything "news" whatsoever. It's just a command station for talking heads, sensationalism, innuendo, etc.
@radiodj1520 It probably was their overnight report from the next day (the Nets-Warriors game with 4 OTs wasn't done by 11 ET, because it was played in SF) – SportsCenter on Sundays in 1987 aired at noon, 7pm, and 11pm ET, with an overnight airing at 2:30am ET. Note the Sunday reference in the last lead item, as well.
What the hell? Were they about to talk about sports on ESPN? I need to know about potential trades that won't happen, what Barry Bonds had for dinner last night, how TO is getting along with his teammates, and FOR GODSSAKE WHETHER OR NOT THE PLAYERS SHOOK HANDS AFTER THE GAME.
You have a friend for life.ESPN has become "Hollywood Access--The sports edition".A new sports network must emerge and save us from what has become a shit-starting station.Give me some information you fuckers. There are more than 2 teams in baseball and Tom Brady is not the only QB in the league. And the way they suck Tiger Woods' dick,he should ejaculate all the time.Fuck ESPN and what they stand for.I won't watch that shit.
Interesting that she said there will likely be a new number one in college basketball after what happened to North Carolina on Sunday. Same can be said 22 years later.
That definitely sounds like a news theme, not a sports theme. ESPN started using it shortly after being bought out by ABC through the end of the 80s. Notice only one reporter in the studio.
you are correct! I guess they were not using it anymore and it seemed too good to waste. Over the years, the theme was modifed and reproduced.. but, that, in a roundabout way is how we arrived at the six note Sportscenter ending which has now become famous. For those who really want to go "old school" one of the earliest themes for sportscenter was Pulstar by Vangelis.
This looks like such a pretentious hard news show. booooo
I miss the 90s when SportsCenter was fun, laid back, and had jokes to spare.
In the mid to late 2000s through now it went back to being a pretentious news show. Only now its more like FOX News.

Going solo! I've never seen that on Sportscenter.

Must be a slow day in sports if the lead story was "The America's Cup" of sailing.

I have 1986 footage of Sharon Smith. Quite an attractive sportscaster!

Don't laugh. I had a major crush on Sharon Smith when I was kid.

Does anyone have the Sportscenter intros from earlier in ESPN's history--like the early 80s?

SportsCenter: SERIOUS BUSINESS
I mean, this is any 11 o' clock news broadcast of the time, with the stories replaced by sports.

Whatever happened to Sharon Smith, anyhow?

From the NBA basketball headline, a quick Google dates this to Sun, Feb 1, 1987 (Warriors 150, Nets 147).
