My orthodontist gave me a kind if metal key thing (it looks like a deformed paperclip) and all I do is put it in the little holes on the middle of the top retainer (it's between the plastic bits) and you just twist it round etc...it works pretty good and there is less chance of breaking the metal nstead if pushing it urself.

I have a different retainer and I have a tiny TINY key to tighten them. I made a video about them. Lol. I swear Im going to loose that key. lol.
