this album is amazing musically, however it seems like the drummer is barely paying attention the entire time.. and its badly recorded in a not-good-lo-fi way
@heyJOOD what are you talking about?! modest mouse grew up on destroyer... well not really but still I'm pretty sure destroyer wasn't influenced by modest mouse.
@mayhemnecrobutcher If you have listened to the early Modest Mouse back when they where heavily influenced by The Pixies. Then this sounds alot like them. But then again you could also say this sounds like The Pixies. And Destroyer and Modest Mouse released their debut the same year (1996) so maybe they where just both listening to the pixies. Hence the similarities. Not saying anything about any copying it`s just the style. this is a great song by the way.
you guys are stupid. always relating shit to drugs. this song was written about the first time he fell inlove with someone from across the room. her in distress, probably due to the lack of happiness. and he is there to save her. save someone yourself. another day you wait is another day wasted
it's nice to see currently active musicians taking obvious cues from bands like pavement and guided by voices, and perhaps bejar is even more genre breaking/bridging/creating/destroying than those two.
@supermoose5 The New Pornographers covered this song for the Dark Was the Night compilation last year. Dan Bejar: aka Destroyer, wrote/recorded it back in 2002.
@CityOfDaughters Eh, I wouldn't say everyone of them is. I mean, the New Porno's version of Breakin' the Law is fantastic in my opinion, and even their version of "Streets of Fire" is rather nice. Still, the Porno's version of Hey, Snow White makes me want to puke.
@Havenscope I'll agree with you on that, but I still think both of them are better on We'll Build them a Golden Bridge. Covering anything off of This Night is simply dangerous though!
@CityOfDaughters I agree with you completely. This Night should probably just be left alone (by New Pornographers at least), and Destroyer's first album is not only his best work (well, arguably tied with This Night), but it's simply untouchable.
@Havenscope We'll Build them a Golden Bridge was the first I've heard and it's still a masterpiece in my mind. I'm glad someone else has as high of an opinion on it! At the end of the day though, I can't come up with a single album of his that isn't perfect (or very close to).
@Havenscope I dont think its fair to compare the new pornographers version in the same light..theirs is a more poppy, catered-to -a -wider-audience version. This, the original obviously is alot more layered and has a lot more depth, but I think both versions can be appreciated equally.
No problem at all! And also, if you're interested in some earlier Destroyer, his first two albums, We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge and City of Daughters, are brilliant. We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge, his very first, is very experimental and abrasive at times, but it's one of my favorites. City of Daughters is his entrance into the more of a poppy sound that he has developed over the years.
@LiLRaaat You can't go wrong with many Destroyer albums. Try starting off with Thief, Rubies or Streethawk: A Seduction. Then you can get into his more challenging work like This Night, Your Blues or Bay of Pigs.
also sound a bit like sonic youth
