How many people know that the original "Pledge of Allegiance" to the Flag was written by a socialist? (A Christian Socialist to be precise - Francis Bellamy). And the original pledge did NOT have the "under God" phrase.

When YT user "onlywhenprovoked" originally posted his video (starting from 4:15 and ending at 6:08), that was the thumbnail for his video. IIRC, the original title of his video was "Happy 4th of July".
Because of that, most people would assume that it would be an anti-American video (which "onlywhenprovoked" was well aware).
As a Canadian, I've been to few states, namely Nevada, Arkansa, North Carolina, Florida, and Maine, and when I went into shops, everyone of them had one isle made up entirely of disposable items with the American flag on them, and originally I thought it was just cheesy. Putting a flag on this stuff isn't patriotic, it's just gimmicky. Now, when I look at it today, I honestly don't care. There are some Americans who are just too pig headed to not recognize a wrong. A flag is a flag nothing more.

People fail to realize that there is a very specific way to burn old flag (which is called reitiring them btw, lol). Thankfully, many libraries and other such public places have bins to deposit old flags so as to not constrain the public with the long procedure. To disrespect the flag is to disrespect those who have sacrificed for the ideals that it stands for- everywhere even beyond our nation.
This is exactly what kids in school need to see, hear and UNDERSTAND. Freedom of Speech is not BURNING A FLAG! But I remember it being very sad, and terrible that someone would want to do that to a symbol of Our Country's Freedom. Why do we feel so passionate about a material item? A flag is only a group of colours and symbols to signify what country it represents. Honestly, if someone burned a Canadian flag, as a Canadian, I wouldn't care, it's only a flag. There's plenty of other flags out there and the burning of a piece of cloth is not something to get all choked up over. Someone fighting and dying in Irag, that's something to get choked up over, not the peice of cloth draped over their coffin.

@Kizzarools It's the freedom it represents. It's dishonest to say the flag has no meaning. What you really mean is that the flag has no meaning to you. For example, take a picture of your mom or your child - whoever - someone who means a lot to you. Take that picture, spit on it and tear it up. Most people (if they're being honest) will admit they'd have a hard time doing that. Even though it's really just a piece of paper - it represents something valuable.

I agree with therealweeklynews. A flag is a symbol for a country, not an accessory. As a former scout I remember the importance of the flag and its handling, to place it on napkins or to wrap yourself in one is to degrade its value.
This so-called patriotism is very much nationalism, and sometimes I wish that everyone understood the difference.
In my opinion the flag is a symbol for America and its people, burning it with the intention of hate is pissing on anyone who has ever lived here. However, people often see it as a symbol for its defenders and reason that into the pledge. Why can't people do what Monday did and visit those veterans and personally thank them? That has more meaning than reciting a pledge that was meant to insight nationalism. Despite my anti-pledge stance, I think the flag still deserves respect.
What I get from the video is that the American flag shouldn't be treated like an accessory, but rather a symbol of these 50 states and all of the people that have sacrificed their lives to keep this country running today.

Not really sure why you would want to burn the flag. If you don't like the country move to Canada. And I know its not that easy as to just "get out" but you don't have to put up with something you don't like, when there is an exit from it. Just doesn't make much sense to me.
As far as I'm concerned, the rules of the flag really don't need to be that big of a deal. I've always had the mindset that as long as someone has good intentions, nothing else should matter. Yes, according to the rules of the flag, it's technically disrespectful to make USA flag paper plates or to paint it on a dumpster, but do the people who do these things have bad intentions in doing so? I think not.
Doing something good in life doesn't always mean you have to follow all the rules.

@animemefreak74 If you pause the video at 4:15, you will see a picture of a burning American flag. When YT user "onlywhenprovoked" originally posted his video (starting from 4:15 and ending at 6:08), that was the thumbnail for his video. IIRC, the original title of his video was "Happy 4th of July".
Because of that, most people would assume that it would be an anti-American video (which "onlywhenprovoked" was well aware).

As a Canadian, I've been to few states, namely Nevada, Arkansa, North Carolina, Florida, and Maine, and when I went into shops, everyone of them had one isle made up entirely of disposable items with the American flag on them, and originally I thought it was just cheesy. Putting a flag on this stuff isn't patriotic, it's just gimmicky. Now, when I look at it today, I honestly don't care. There are some Americans who are just too pig headed to not recognize a wrong. A flag is a flag nothing more.

Interesting video and I admire your take on it, I too am sick of plastic patriots. What's worse are the yellow ribbon crowd. They profess to support and love the troops, but then do nothing for them when the time comes. Look at the Tillman murder. People would have rather protected President Bush and General McChrystal from investigation, than to support the troops by investigating them.

People fail to realize that there is a very specific way to burn old flag (which is called reitiring them btw, lol). Thankfully, many libraries and other such public places have bins to deposit old flags so as to not constrain the public with the long procedure. Th fact that people burn the flag illegally is a crime and they dishonor the country that lets thme have the freedom to do as they wish.

First of all, being proud of one's nation is not placing ourselves above another. Secondly, Rick Monday didn't violate anyone's rights. These people went on to private property and tried to commit an act of arson for the sake of their own vanity. Lastly, its not where, how, or if you wear a flag, it is about what you would do to defend what that flag represents. To disrespect the flag is to disrespect those who have sacrificed for the ideals that it stands for- everywhere even beyond our nation.

This is exactly what kids in school need to see, hear and UNDERSTAND. Freedom of Speech is not BURNING A FLAG! The Flag should ONLY be burned in the event that it has become unable to be used beyond repair. Or it can also be handed over to the BSA for a proper burial service as well. Thank you for this video. Very good! God Bless you for putting it online. I was about 12 when that happened, so I vaguely remember it happening. But I remember it being very sad, and terrible that someone would want to do that to a symbol of Our Country's Freedom. It stands for everything that everyone from other oppressed countries come here to get away from. Its great you talked about the flag rules, as I'm sure very few have heard them. Why do we feel so passionate about a material item? A flag is only a group of colours and symbols to signify what country it represents. Honestly, if someone burned a Canadian flag, as a Canadian, I wouldn't care, it's only a flag. There's plenty of other flags out there and the burning of a piece of cloth is not something to get all choked up over. Someone fighting and dying in Irag, that's something to get choked up over, not the peice of cloth draped over their coffin.

@Kizzarools It's the freedom it represents. It's dishonest to say the flag has no meaning. What you really mean is that the flag has no meaning to you. For example, take a picture of your mom or your child - whoever - someone who means a lot to you. Take that picture, spit on it and tear it up. Most people (if they're being honest) will admit they'd have a hard time doing that. Even though it's really just a piece of paper - it represents something valuable.

Actually modern day society extends beyond the US. World peace is not embroidered on a piece of cloth and the rest of the World doesn't look at your flag before it looks at your country, and how it negotiates 'international freedom'.
I think it's great to be proud of your country and the principles of your constitution, just don't let it cloud your judgement.
As most historians will tell you US foreign policy has mostly just tipped the global economic scales in your favour.

Our Founding Fathers were less than impressed by what they termed "Weekend Patriuots" and "Summer Soldiers" and only created the flag during a time of war. Banning flag burning directly violates a constitutionaly guaranteed free speech clause, si it can't be banned. But, even given their right to burn a flag in protest, they always have the option to leave this country.

Americans are still idolizing their flag, yet they are too stupid to learn what's really going on in Congress. Even if the truth would get out, i doubt many Americans will care. I mean, a century of oppressing and sucking the natural resources out of country's, giving back nothing to the owners of the land, like they are doing in Panama, Honduras, Equador, Afghanistan, Iraq, and more . they could aswell replace the stars with a swastika

Symbols do not make a nation, nor does fanfare or imagery. Adolf Hitler taught me that. What makes the US of the As the best nation on the earth is what its laws and codes and ideals stand for. Nothing more or less. In all other regards, the US is not above the rest of the world. To say so is ignorant and upsetting.

I agree with therealweeklynews. A flag is a symbol for a country, not an accessory. As a former scout I remember the importance of the flag and its handling, to place it on napkins or to wrap yourself in one is to degrade its value.
This so-called patriotism is very much nationalism, and sometimes I wish that everyone understood the difference.

In my opinion the flag is a symbol for America and its people, burning it with the intention of hate is pissing on anyone who has ever lived here. However, people often see it as a symbol for its defenders and reason that into the pledge. Why can't people do what Monday did and visit those veterans and personally thank them? That has more meaning than reciting a pledge that was meant to insight nationalism. Despite my anti-pledge stance, I think the flag still deserves respect.

What I get from the video is that the American flag shouldn't be treated like an accessory, but rather a symbol of these 50 states and all of the people that have sacrificed their lives to keep this country running today.
At least I think that's what the point of this video is. If so, then I agree. It's a good thing that Rick Monday turned down that offer for the flag. It's sad to see people think that the flag is just an item and not a symbol of anything.

Not really sure why you would want to burn the flag. If you don't like the country move to Canada. And I know its not that easy as to just "get out" but you don't have to put up with something you don't like, when there is an exit from it. Just doesn't make much sense to me.

As far as I'm concerned, the rules of the flag really don't need to be that big of a deal. I've always had the mindset that as long as someone has good intentions, nothing else should matter. Yes, according to the rules of the flag, it's technically disrespectful to make USA flag paper plates or to paint it on a dumpster, but do the people who do these things have bad intentions in doing so? I think not.
Doing something good in life doesn't always mean you have to follow all the rules.

Wow..I hate people like you, and this is coming from someone who isnt even American. 80% of the world are all third world countries that all risk their lives to come here. Even people from Europe, etc. they all come to America. Why? Because their more oppurtunities and freedom here then any place in the world. You must come from a pretty sucky town to say that. Educate yourself.

I know that there are countries that are worse than the US. And people from those kind of countries will be fortunate to come here. But I dont get why people from Europe would want to come here. I guess the grass is always greener. My stepdad used to live in Europe and he had to come back to the US for his job. And he dreaded coming back. He loved Europe. And I actually live in a quite average town. And educate myself? Hunny don't worry, I read all those extremely biased American history books.

I am from Europe, and loved it there. But standard of libing and oppurtunity is soo much better in US, even when I go back to my country they agree. You should move to NYC, if you want to try something new.
Besides do you know anyone at the country you want to move? The culture, the language?
All books from every country are biased, they try to depict their country as best.
