A mio parere, questo pezzo musicale potrebbe essere tranquillamente inserito in uno degli ultimi quartetti d'archi Beethoviani. In pochi noterebbero che tra questo e gli altri intercorrono 200 anni di storia musicale. Grande Gesualdo!!
I have to disagree, remember that this is in imitation of vocal music, and the voice naturally has vibrato... you may make the argument that in order to play a period bowed strings piece there should be a limit to vibrato because the most popular bowed instruments had frets, however; I think it works very well for a piece of vocal music.
Please... they didn't use vibrato constantly at that time in songs.... Just.. please... The vibrato was considered as an ornament in all instrumental/vocal music... Just read the articles from that time, please..... what we hear here is wagnerifized music. I am studying this, I am an early musician scientist.
Please, vibrato is a naturally occurring vocal quality in humans, please, yes it can be exaggerated by overt use, please, don't parade your supposed qualifications in order to validate your opinions, please, remember that the viol family was more common than the violin family and because of the frets could not produce the same quality of vibrato.
The viols can make as much vibrato as the violins, but I promise you; The vibrato was an ornament, people that used constant vibrato was said to have the fever - hiding their mistakes.
But this isn't an authentic performance, it's not historically informed, I can accept that.. but I don't like it being exposed as the authentic thing.
Vibrato is not supposed to occur naturally while singing. A good voice requires a clean sound with the ability to add vibrato for emphasis of certain notes. Playing or singing Gesualdo with lots of vibrato is a modern interpretation of the music. I personally think, vibrato destroys the raw power of Gesualdo's compositions. But that's a matter of taste.
Vibrato is natural, it allows the voice to not become fatigued, you can suspend vibrato but that is not healthy for the voice, for more information on this you can read "The Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults" By James Mckinny
Yes, a voice has a natural oscillation, but for trained singers, it's only marginal, compared to the technical vibrato of an instrumentalist. The excessive vibrato in this video does not resemble a human voice, it resembles excessive vibrato on a string instrument.
Whatever, it depends on the individual, while it is true that vibrato can be exagerated by some, it is an arrogant thing to say for sure that Gesualdo's pieces were sung without vibrato by everyone.
Like KarlAmade said, the 16th century was generally sparing with vibrato and other ornamental techniques. Doesn't mean it was completely void of it, but it wasn't nearly used as excessive as here.
In the first two posts i talked about a voice's oscillation and how it's distinctive from vibrato. In the third post i talked about vibrato as a technique, and how it was used rather rarely in the time when Gesualdo lived.
yes yes, good, but try to sing instead of playing on instrument...in this way you can't really understand the highness of gesualdo...remember, in this music the text is basically related to music...so it doesn't make too sense just play it...
Funziona! L'aveva intuito bene Stravinsky! Credetemi!!!

Nice sound, but as you are performing a vocal piece perhaps take into account some of the vocal articulation. Breaks in the poery and break marks?

What a brilliant idea to take one of Gesualdo's 5 voice madrigals and score it for modern strings.
