An Artist TRYING to find their own voice is more benifical to the community of music than a thousand Artists that are trying to imitate...........I believe this man is trying to find his voice, and his search for it sounds beautiful!
Couldn't agree more. One of the most talented players ever. He plays with such emotion which can bring a smile, scream or whail. I try to get to see him as often as possible in Germany or Paris. Never boring.
N LE was just finding his voice in the late 80s. By the time his first CDs as a leader (Miracles, Zanzibar) came out he was already a maturing artist. But since then he has come so very far. He reconnected with his vietnamese roots and made Tales of Vietnam.. He has since recorded something like 5 more CDs with vietnamese singer Huong Thanh, each a stellar studio effort with little or no reference to Scofield or Frisell or Rypdal. Art Lande has called him the future of jazz.
Just to add-listen to Magrehb and Friends, his collaboration with moroccan musicians (amazing), the beautiful Walking on the Tigers Tail for some lovely european influenced compositions.s. Bakida for world jazz at its finest. And then there's ELB, his trio with Erskine and his Hendrix project. This is just the tip of a very large iceberg. N Ls is a force who is almost singlehandedly showing the way to integrate world music and jazz without compromising either. His new CD will be w koto/tabla
true but its not like Sco doesn't listen to what's going on around him. Nguyen is an innovator in his own right. He is anything but an imitator. Nguyen Le was finding his voice in the world fusion band Ultramarine in the early 80s. To hear awesome examples listen to Magrehb and Friends. I would also check out Walking on the Tigers Tail, the Hendrix album Purple, (although not my favorite.)or the new ELB record, Dreamflight and Bakida
Nguyen Le is a good guitar player with his own sound and very original (I have heard Walking on the Tiger's Tail & Bakida), but personally I like more guitarrists as, just for example, Dave Allen (Real And Imagined) or Pete McCann (You Remind Me Of Someone)among the new voices (although Le was born in 59). Trully, "Dreamflight" is a great album. I like it so much
Scofield's This Meets That is also a great album and a lot of fun (Satisfaction, House Of The Rising Sun, Strangeness In The Night).
Scofield's first solo release was in 1977, Le's in 90. Sounds like Mark Johnson's Bass Desires (85) and second sight (87) on ECM featuring Scofield and Frisell on guitars are a point of reference here (with a bit of Rypdal). I'm not sure he has found his voice at this point, at least judging by his sound on the albums from the mid 90's on.

@bridude2001 Walking on the Tiger's Tail is indeed a masterpiece. The kind of music which becomes quickly a part of you innermost self.
