@Charbax Ridiculous nonsense. Of course it works. It might not be optimal, and you might have trouble seeing it at certain angles, but it works. Of course a qi screen is much much better in the sun, but you are exaggerating how bad other screens are. People do use ipads in the sun, so if you want to be taken seriously, you can't say ridiculous lies like "ipad screen does not work outdoors."
@realisticHomeboy Nah, by "it works" I mean that people use it, and they don't. I'm not saying people don't use the ipad, just not to read ebooks outdoors during sunny days, and the Pixel Qi screen uses 5x to 10x less power in reflective mode. Sure you can do other stuff with a tablet, browse the web, watch videos, use apps, I think though reading is a very important feature (reading for more than 5 minutes) and that needs to be on a reflective screen to work
A lot of ppl don't understand what this is. Here are the facts:
Pixel Qi is a SCREEN TECHNOLOGY, not the laptop. It can be put in ANY device (yes, it can be put in the iPad).
Pixel Qi can use backlighting and display full colour like a regular display at the flick of a switch. The monocromatic outdoor display is an OPTION. You flick the switch to kill the backlight and go into outdoors mode. The best of both worlds
Thumbs up so this can be put on the front page where crazy fanboys can see it.
@iDiggMGL Pixel Qi can do just as good backlit colors too. Pixel Qi is not only about reflections, it's about using it as e-ink for reading, it's about using it outdoors and it's about 40-50 hours battery runtime on the same sized battery instead of 8 hours.
@iDiggMGL Same size as any other LCD screen. It's pin compatible with any netbook for example and can be easily inserted instead of the existing netbook screens, you can see do-it-yourself guides for that on the web.
Say what you want, but when the sunlight is right at you reflected by no matter what material, glass or matte screen, you can see anything but the sun!
@ddnn3 It's not just an anti-glare issue. Pixel Qi reflects the light and doesn't require a back light at all with ambient light. That is very different from the ipad's current lcd that needs back light to show any contents.
Qi or no Qi, iPad & iPhone are selling off the shelf! Who want to read the screen under a bright sun? Make fun or criticize all you want, you just cannot compete with Apple!
@cytonychang There is no reason for Apple not to use this technolgy in all their products. Wouldn't you prefer an ipad with 50 hour battery runtime and one that has just as good readability as a Kindle? All those people comparing ipad to Kindle are wrong, but if ipad used Pixel Qi, they would be right! As for the iphone outdoors, I think the main purpose of a phone is to use it outdoors, so I think that a reflective screen would be perfect for that as well.
This is not really all that new. There've been outdoor screens for decades. The colors and contrast have never been as sharp as normal screens, as is evidenced by this video demonstration. It's always a 'give and take' decision on what suits the individual's needs the most.

I just went to an apple store in Tyson's Corner, VA and got to play around with an iPad. I wish they could have a higher HD capicity and could be used outdoors. (what camera are you using?)
@mikurej95 grayscale is only the reflected mode. When you are indoors, just like with ipad, you can use the backlight in full color. Thus Pixel Qi is same as ipad in color indoors and much better than ipad in grayscale outdoors. Also, like e-ink, you can use Pixel Qi indoors with a reading light at nearly the same reflected quality as e-ink, the only way to read ebooks.
ipad comparing will not be an issue.. standalone finess is important.. I'd like to see videos of video chatting.. on google.. then reading a mag on the buss.. using the gps while driving.. transfering videos while mailing.. your swivle cam shold be supreme.. just think my 2 yr old son talking to to his grand pa at nagpur.. they would be worth something.. both computer illustrates.. I hope you make that possible...
@spencersmat It is on max brightness at least in the end, there's just no competing with a backlight against sunlight, especially with a reflective screen and a mobile device.
Sure you could make it a little better just by putting a stronger backlight in the iPad (and burn battery), but there's just no way you can put a backlight strong enough to fight with the sun on a mobile devile like that.
wow so surprising and who cares about it anyway who would buy that cheap ass piece of crap anyway pixel qi is like a toy to others of the size range like my alienware m11x would murder that crappy piece of junk and if they had a 15in model my macbook pro would do the same as well and and i only use my ipad indoors so their isnt i need to take it outside but the pixel qi does have a cool screen
@ianerick lol i didnt look at the whole thing i dazed off and thought that was the whole thing but who cares i does suck tho but has i great concept has color while indoors and its shows in black in white while in the sun or other bright conditions i like there touch screen model screen better kind of
Can you get rid of the keyboard ? Just trying to hold the laptop is a pain especially when outdoors. The iPhone has screen protectors that allow for outside viewing as well. The older tech laptops were pretty good outdoors - newer ones not so much.
they both have their downsides, for instance the iPad is hard to hold when your sitting. holding the thing up at a slant for any amount of time will wear out your wrists, and if you put it flat on the table you have to bend your head over it and type terribly. that's why i am looking at the lenovo one, it's a tablet then you can connect it to a base with a more powerful processor, plus it runs both android and win7.
Ok yea u mite be able to use it outside but WTF would u wanna carry sumthin so bulky n heavy outside when u can just store ur iPad in a back pack or small carry on case n be able to just lift it wit ease. I mean if tha iPad didnt live up to pples standards when they bought it y is it selling 23 a min, 1,388 an hr and 33,000 a day. I mean yea sum feats could be added but thats y we Jailbreak and take control of it. Plus havin sumthin so portable is more convenient n no1 really uses it outdoors.
@smidoid Pixel Qi is monochromatic outdoors and with reflected light when you are somewhere with a lot of ambient light. When indoors, Pixel Qi is like the iPad, a full backlit color LCD screen.
@Charbax which is what I said, comparing chalk and cheese - but I'm glad you cleared that up. The real question here though is this: how many people will actually use the iPad outdoors in blazing sun? It's not a case of how clever your tech is, it's a question of how many people buy it. 2,000,000+ already got iPads despite this "issue".
@smidoid The issue I think is not only to use it outdoors. Pixel Qi is nearly just as good as e-ink for reading. So any place you would use an e-ink screen, with ample ambient light, an indoor reading light or outdoors, the Pixel Qi will let you read whole books without hurting your eyes with an iPad backlight that basically is kind of like staring into a light bulb for hours and hours.
@smidoid Isn't the whole point of portability to be able to carry it around at, one would assume, places that include the outside? The park, the beach, the backyard, waiting for a bus, etc.
@smidoid Well to your question: Not many people do because it sucks so much - Now if the iPad had worked in blazing sun the answer would have been very different.
@B1aDK iPad, iPhone, HTC desire ... and on and on... does anyone make a screen that works in bright sun? None that I've come across.
Working in monochrome in bright sunlight is something that monochrome LCDs have being doing for years. This seems to be a combination of both, but not as good as either one.
Im just asking your question which is kinda flawed - You asked if anybody would even use it in bright sunligt - of course they don't if you cant see what is on the screen. Now, if it WOULD have worked in bright sunlight, there would have been PLENTY of people doing it.
@B1aDK Look, I don't wish to appear unduly brusque, but could you put that in plain English please? The poor spelling I can manage, but I'm having some difficulty in extracting which technology you are alluding to; and there's no need to shout.
You might also consider looking up the meaning of a rhetorical question, because I suspect that's the one you're attempting to discuss.
@smidoid Hehe, I see the mistake I made but it wasn't from bad English, just got distracted while writing. ^^
Anyway, it might be that you're question was rhetorical but it doesn't make much sense. It appears to be an excuse for iPad(and all the others) for not working proberly in bright sunligt. You see? "Well nobody uses it anyways". Im just saying, that of course no one is using it in bright sunlight when you cant use it. Had it worked in bright sunlight, the case would have been different.
@B1aDK This isn't really that new - it's a bridging technology like 1950s 3D glasses were. I can see the attraction of a screen that offers both monochrome and colour depending on the light, but in reality, a lot of users really don't give a fig. They care if it works when they want to use it. BUT colour is a vital source of information; change to greyscale and suddenly things are far harder to see - which rather defeats the point of having monochromatic capability. Chalk vs. cheese.
@B1aDK Which was what? You haven't actually made a point that I'm aware of.
LCD screens are imperfect. But like it or not, people want colour. We evolved colour vision because it's an advantage. Some birds can see into the ultra-violet - it's an advantage to them.
Most people I know would rather go into the shade. TR technology would be more useful in a mobile phone or a Satnav because then you don't have the option and it would be handy. In a computer... well, maybe. But the market is limited
netbooks fail you would think that they would have great battery life but they last for about 2 hours and they're done that's with the standard batteries of course
how? it's a little laptop, i see nothing wrong with them. besides this is showing the screen, you can put the screen on anything. the notion ink adam will have a pixel qi screen and it looks amazing.
b-b-but thats actually an iPad feature, it prevents you from going under the sun, we all know that teh evil star can cause skin cancer and stuff IMHO the sun is overrated also I have heard the sun is a strong supporter of FLASH and FLASH = terrorism, so be a walled garden patriot and show your middle finger to the sun, anyway the screen is optimized for the dim lighting of hipster cafes why would I want to use it anywhere else? whos going to see ME using it? lol iPad wannabes /sarcasm
NO DON'T SHOW YOUR MIDDLE FINGER it might poison somebodies mind! we don't want that that's why we have apple to search each and every app for "bad stuff"!
@asimetricad So I guess the main selling point to the Pixel Qi would be none considering the fact that it's not even for sale? 4Million + iPads to no products with a Pixel Qi screen, means my money is on Apple.
when u need hybrid device - with backlight and sunlight - Pixel Qi is the best
but if you want mere e-book, without backlight - then search video of Mirasol IMOD screen expected this winter. As e-paper it would trum down both e-Ink and Pixel Qi. I wish to see side by side test of Mirasol vs Pixel Qi, not thuis dmb iPad
Viewing angle issues with the 3 Qi screen have obviously been fixed. Pixel Qi has to be the leader in "transreflective" lcd technology. The minute the Notion Ink "Adam" tablet with this screen hits the streets, I'm buying!!! Apple iPad look out!!!
@MayNotBeToScale this adam tablet looks very promissing indeed! tablet with full hd decoding capabilities and an hdmi output? hmm smells like the ultimate portable media center! (can you imagine this beuty emulating psx and snes games? uhhh calling for a bluetooth gaming controller!)
Kindle is not Pixel Qi, it's eInk. eInk is monochrome only and slow refresh rate, so no chance of getting video there. Pixel Qi is all the readability of eInk + all the veratility of a proper color TFT.
Holy shit! So the dude is probably Rohan Shravan from Notion Ink (building the 'Adam' tablet PC w/ Pixel Qi display) and that chick is wearing an Computex 2010 badge!!! Looks like Notion Ink made it out to the expo after all... if unofficially =)
@akmolski The guy seems Chinese, probably not Rohan Shravan. I am really hoping he shows something concrete at computex and hopefully a launch date/price :)

glossy screens have more vivid true colours but as you can see in this video the reflection is bad in sunlight

matte vs glossy screen

b-b-but thats actually an iPad feature, it prevents you from going under the sun, we all know that teh evil star can cause skin cancer and stuff IMHO the sun is overrated also I have heard the sun is a strong supporter of FLASH and FLASH = terrorism, so be a walled garden patriot and show your middle finger to the sun, anyway the screen is optimized for the dim lighting of hipster cafes why would I want to use it anywhere else? whos going to see ME using it? lol iPad wannabes /sarcasm

@asimetricad
NO DON'T SHOW YOUR MIDDLE FINGER it might poison somebodies mind! we don't want that that's why we have apple to search each and every app for "bad stuff"!
ianerick 1 year ago
@asimetricad So I guess the main selling point to the Pixel Qi would be none considering the fact that it's not even for sale? 4Million + iPads to no products with a Pixel Qi screen, means my money is on Apple.

@ChrisXMetal jealous much?

@AlphaProtocol360 Why should I be? 5 months later, and where's the Pixel Qi now?

iPad owners, eat your apple-shaped heart out!!

when u need hybrid device - with backlight and sunlight - Pixel Qi is the best
but if you want mere e-book, without backlight - then search video of Mirasol IMOD screen expected this winter.

Kindle is not Pixel Qi, it's eInk. eInk is monochrome only and slow refresh rate, so no chance of getting video there. Pixel Qi is all the readability of eInk + all the veratility of a proper color TFT.

The guy is not Chinese...it's Charbax himself (the poster of the video). The woman is the inventor of the Pixel Qi screen Mary-Lou Jepsen.

@drsteve0487 You are correct.
Do you know where Charbax is from tho?

Holy shit! So the dude is probably Rohan Shravan from Notion Ink (building the 'Adam' tablet PC w/ Pixel Qi display) and that chick is wearing an Computex 2010 badge!!! Looks like Notion Ink made it out to the expo after all... if unofficially =)
akmolski 1 year ago
@akmolski The guy seems Chinese, probably not Rohan Shravan. I am really hoping he shows something concrete at computex and hopefully a launch date/price :)
