  • Emmett, his son and grandson... There's an interesting story worth reading.

  • Love this! Thanks for posting.

  • that has to be the most sullen clown I've ever seen.

  • That's the saddest looking clown I've ever seen...

  • Not only do the male members of the panel stand to shake his hand (as they do in every episode of course), Mr. Kelly removes his hat, like a proper gentleman, when shaking hands with the ladies.

These small niceties have been lost.

  • A clown so famous that even I have heard of him.

  • i LOVE the clown

  • A native of Bazaar, Kansas, he was elected to the Kansas Hall of Fame a few years ago. Few were more deserving of the honor.

  • okay???????????????????????????????????

  • He was a true hero during the tragic circus fire in Hartford CT July 1944.

  • His hand is among the most magnificent that I've ever seen, worthy of copperplate, yet written in chalk on a blackboard.

  • Never trust a clown.

  • @cheeriosinabowl Especially when they park at the elementary school in a black van and offer you candy if you'll get inside.

  • I'd be sad too if Arlene kept getting yes's and sent me home with zero dollars.

  • Emmit Kelly was in his Dressing Tent when the Hartford Circus Fire of 1944 happened, and story goes is that for each performance after the fire he painted a tear drop in memory of the 168 people that died in the fire

  • @bigkevcxza now that is a mith. And actually not true at all. Never has there been any picture or movie with Emmet with that tear in his make up. If you can find one that would be a historical break thru!!

  • I don't understand how people can have such a fear of clowns. For me, they stand as one of the few things completely pure and good in the world, to the arts what a saint is to a church. I miss the days where clowning was a common interest. Many will say things that are so slapstick are crude, but the simplicity of it is something which is comedy at it's purest form, to hell with irony!

To Emmett Kelly, and his brother clowns everywhere, may we see a renaissance of his kind in the near future!

  • @EpicArianas I'm doing a project on him as well. It's rather honerable as well to do this.

  • @AngelicKillerChild Just so you you know man, in the commercial on youtube, it is terrible, he completely sells out, he is a sad tramp clown. in the commercial he was a happy clown.

  • "Clothes make the man..."

  • is emmet kelly dead or alive

  • @awsomedudejacob He died of pneumonia complications on the 26th of november 2006, in sierra vista, he will be remembered forever, i am doing a school project on him, R.I.P <3

  • @EpicArianas what?? he died in 1976

  • @awsomedudejacob dead my friend

  • I love that they panel is smart enough (and well-informed enough) to know what Broadway shows, acts, and other events are in town at the moment. They often use this knowledge to accurately guess the identify of the Secret Guests. A delightful panel, and I would love to see a version of this today. It would be a challenge to assemble such an erudite group, but it could be done (any ideas?). And of course, they absolutely would have to wear evening dress!

  • @LoudCitizen While you are correct in your assessment, I often wished that the show would not allow the panel to ask a guest if they are currently playing in town. That seems to show a lack of true gamesmanship. Make the panel have to really dig to learn who the guest is.

  • All the W M L posts are wonderful, but this has my vote for BEST. We'll always love you, Miss Arlene.

  • lol my name is Emmett my sisters name is Kelly :P

  • two things tell me that this is old 1. its in black and white, and 2. the audince wont shout out the awnser like DOUCHES!!!

  • I know it's only makeup, but I felt so sad for him!

  • Arlene's mask looks like fried eggs.

  • wow! she guessed him simply from the audiences reaction to his entrance!

  • They should have made him the celebrity guest because not speaking gives too much away for a non-celebrity slot.

  • he's gudd

  • Is thad a hobo or a clown... i don't see the diference :S

  • @pongboy1100 there is no difference. that's why u shouldn't be a clown!

  • Emette Kelly was at the Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey Circus in Hartford the day it Burned, after the day the Circus burned he rarely smiled

  • @bigkevcxza in public @ least , who is it you know that knew him that would tell you what he did in private??

  • What beautiful handwriting! The mark of a true artist...

  • I was lucky and got to meet Mr. Kelly in Cleveland where he spoke sans make-up to us young actors and was very erudite and inspiring. A great cartoonist. Thx for the clip..I always love when John and Arlene would banter back and forth..How they are all missed!

  • CLOWN

  • Emmet Kelly is my great great uncle...

  • Sad clown is sad. :-(

  • I thought this to be awsome, Myself as a professional clown I was in awwe of all he does, I had the great fortune to see many of his works I see many other famous clowns pick up on alot of his style.

    Spangle The Clown

  • Wow Arlene was really sharp in this one haha she wasn't letting John get away from her :P

  • is that where Red Skelton got Freddy Freeloader?

  • tite

  • Clowns scare me. :(

They creep the hell out of me.

  • He's not the only Clown to appear on this show, Bozo did appear on it also.

  • But where are the clowns? Send in the Clowns

  • Incredible talent was Emmett Kelly

  • is it just me or does Mr. Allen look a lot different from previous episodes from not so long ago? What happened to him?

  • Well he did die 6 days later...

  • He died of a heart attack. As it was, WML was on his doctor's short "OK list" of projects, as the grind of all those radio shows did a number on him through the years. He was also writing another book at this time. I sure wish he had lived longer...

  • A maquiagem dele é otima. Essa boca, maravilhosa!!!

  • Red Skelton as Freddy the Freeloader reminds one of the great Emmett Kelly. Some names stand out over others; John Wayne, Andres Segovia, Enrico Caruso, Joe Louis, Babe Ruth, John Holmes...

Emmett Kelly is a name that will forever be synonymous with the word "clown." He was truly an original.

  • great

  • Normally I'm a hater of clowns and mimes but he's absolutely brilliant.

  • It's amazing how he is so funny just by making simple expresions! Genius!!

  • Man, its amazing how entertaining this was. Emmet Kelly is the only clown I am not afraid off. Arlene Francis clearly read the NYC society pages daily, she always could spot the mystery guest!

  • Wonderful, just wonderful. I saw Kelly in 'The Greatest Show on Earth' just last night. There will never be another like him.

  • my grandma saw him live when he was alive

  • I'm impressed with Arlene; first getting a refund on that 'no' from John, then getting the both occupation and man behind it all in one go.

  • One of the great entrances in the whole history of WML.

Considering how important this kinescope is in TV history, G-T did not do a good job of preservation. The second mystery guest sequence is completely missing.

For those who accuse Dorothy Kilgallen of being argumentative, ( 2:00 ) get a load of Arlene confronting John over definitions.

  • Well said!
