Rock & Roll is resplendant with bitter musical break-ups. Some are down right nasty such as when members of Souxie & the Banchees walked out on her in the middle of the tour. However, in the history of Rock & Roll, nothing gave the finger to a former feuding bandmate than this song. That's John singing the FUCK YOU, Paul, Harrison is on Slide for the middle eight and Ringo is on drums. Paul must have shit himself playing it. The sad thing is it is a GREAT (HATE) SONG. Lennon was such a dick!
John Lennon is my idol, but I should admit, he shouldn't have been write this song. Immediately obvious that this is under the influence of Yoko. Maybe they were at odds, but Paul was his best friend. And Paul is a genius musician, so it's wrong to say that everything he wrote, is "yesterday" and "another day". Yoko changed John, and not for the better...:(:(:(
@97MissLOL "Immediately obvious that this is under the influence of Yoko." What? I'm sorry if you're disapointed with your hero or anything, but don't blame other people for what he've done.
@SlocumWainright I disagree with your statement. Paul was pretty much nothing without John Lennon! I'm not saying that because I prefer John because I like them equally as much as the other but! In my opinion John made some of his best stuff after The Beatles split up whilst Paul pretty much failed! I mean people only went to see Wings because Paul McCartney was in it they weren't even that great! I like soe of there songs but lets be honest John was like a musical 4x4 he could survive whenever.
@pimpcanesarenotfunny I don't think that's fair. Theres plenty of interviews where Lennon acknowledges Paul as his equal. Also, as time went on, George, John, and Ringo did acknowledge that Paul's relentless work rate was what kept The Beatles going after Brian Epstein died.
If it wasn't for McCartney, the greatest album ever created (Abbey Road) would've never been made. He rallied the rest of the Beatles for 1 more hurrah. For that, he has my eternal gratitude.
@pimpcanesarenotfunny Well, if songs like "Live and Let Die", "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" dosen't qualify as some of the best stuff Paul have ever made, i don't know what would. Also after All Things Must Pass and Imagine hype only McCartney kept himself in the position of one of the most popular musicians through the 70's.
I saw a doc.... could it be about Faul? just saying... makes me sad to even think it could be possibly true since all the clues are there. But john also said that it wasn't about"paul" that it was about himself.
Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney are great and talented songwriters/singers. sure, everyone has their ups and down but when it comes to John and Paul it was different. They had a brother like relationship and when you spend a lot of years with someone you see their true colors and how they actually are. both of them were mad at each other for a period of time, but afterwords they got over it and once again loved each other like brothers even though they sometimes didn't like admitting it.
I don't doubt that John didn't feel like a complete jealous idiot soon after recording, "How Do You Sleep". Understand, I love them both. Very much. But the facts are obvious and indisputable. Paul wins. While John wrote some of the most memorable and haunting songs ever after the Beatle's , (Imagine, and several others), he was never able to come close to the prolific success of Paul. It was obvious that John was the catalyst of the Beatles in the early years. But afterwards, and forever. Paul
Lastly, the attention George has been getting lately is ridiculously absurb. He wrote a few good song and was a really great guitarist and sure he could write better than Ringo (ha) but even Paul wrote a lot more songs of better quality. It is easier to turn out a few great songs. I guess it looks like George was a later bloomer and All Things Must Pass might be the best solo Beatles record but what did he do since then? I don't get it. My favorite song by George is "If I need Someone."
I think Paul had started it with some unfavorable reference to John in a song? Hard for me to know I pay so little attention to bland Paul. The only thing that matters to me is John was the true genius of the band and too many think it was a John-Paul thing. I know exactly who wrote what. Anyone is entitled to their opinion but Lennon's lyrics were more complex and nuanced (obviously) and his songs always more interesting, even melody-wise. This is not a song I even like my John.
@11xzxzxz I have to disagree. To call Paul less talented is a... Well a lie. Im not taking anything away from John but towards the end of The Beatles it was Paul who was leading because John was not really focused anymore. And it wasent Paul who started it.
@Joelnmyles OK. And it's true that John wasn't focused towards the end of the Beatles and John was argumentative and sarcastic and not easy to get along with..
No matter what the song is about, it's amazing how well put together and how intelligently played it is. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney deserve credit for that.
John did not write this song about himself, it's about Paul. Argue all you want, but "Those freaks were right when they said you was dead." is obviously a reference to the "Paul is dead" conspiracy. Also, "The only thing you did was Yesterday." Paul wrote and sang the song Yesterday.

@MrBcfcBrooks John had a much more controversial career. that's why people say that john's solo career was better then paul's solo career. People noticed it more, but not because it was better or worst.
John is harsh, blunt and edgy...Paul is smooth, slick and soft.
Really, when you look at it...there's a Yin / Yang deal going on and there's also the fact that you can't really have one without the other; hence why most of their good projects together were pretty much perfection.
John and Paul were the same skill. Paul wrote some songs only a genius could write, and john wrote chords changes that were said to be simply brilliant and not following the same key or anything. (accidentals)
@ezelite I disliked it too. It may be some good music, but I can't stand these lyrics. They are mean and untruthful. It makes me sad to think they were such great friends and it's sad that something so strong could fall apart so quickly. I was reading all the comments about how "John is better" or "Paul is better" but how could you say that? They are BOTH equally amazing songwriters, singers and people. This song to me is mean and immature but that doesn't mean that I think John is a terrible person!! I also want to point out that PAUL'S SONGS ARE NOT CRAP! Neither of their songs are! Don't you people get it?
@myquest666420 alright. I do agree with you, John did have a way of making really great songs, and I do like a lot of them. I'm just trying to say that Paul is also quite the good musician and songwriter. they BOTH have a way to make music that reaches out to people. and just as well I think that after the Beatles split they had more freedom to write better songs, so it's not just about the Beatles but also afterwards.
My favorite one is McCartney but listen to some of you, arguing about who is better when they are the #1 and #2 songwriters of all history! you can't never say that Paul or Lennon's songs are shit, if they are horrible, then what about all that pop and disney's shit?

@aPpLeJuIcE37RainLucy I dont think eather of them are "bad guys" they are just men with ego's who had their differences. but i understand what your saying. in this case Paul just got cocky and talked a little shit and John responded lol.
Paul deserved this shit, i dont care what anybody says. before the beatles broke up John was originally the one who wanted to leave the beatles, John wassnt scared of going solo, it was paul who was scared. Paul convinced John to stay, then a few years later Paul went behind Johns back and left the beatles. then Paul wrote a few songs mentioning John, John wrote this song as a reply to Paul putting Paul in his place and telling him how it really was.
John was a paradox. I like the guy and I think he was extremely literally and musically inclined but he often contradicted himself. He preached peace while not being in his son's life. And he also wrote this hate song for Paul. (although it is a good song). Never understood the guy.
@residentevlidead -- Total diss song, you're! right!! I do still love this tune though. Great sound, but yeah, a huge diss. Ah, well, such is the nature of art.
He's not dead. That crap started by some nut who was probably high called the radio station and made that assumption. Come on. If The Beatles were covering it up they wouldn't be making any indications through their songs then it woudn't be a cover up.
im kinda confused i love the song and john but i also love paul and his music uhh watever im gonna keep loving them both plus i love georges guitar on this song
@JReinmuth Paul and John were commenting to each other in their music since the 60's. they both had really different music styles. this is kinda just the final stages of that. After this song it kinda became person, and finally John and Paul blew up, they got really agitated, and then suddenly they didn't even know why they were fighting, late 70's Paul and John started talking and communicating with each other. Eventually John and Paul would start jamming together and get into the talks of
@SStoge21 Well, TECHNICALLY *i use this word strongly* John Lennon said the song was about himself, just bashing himself. BUT, it's very clear he's bashing Paul "You live with straights who tell you, yous was king" "The only thing you done was, yesterday, and since you're gone you're 'Just another day'", Many also believe this to be a Paul is dead song "Those freaks was right when they said yous was dead, the one mistake was, in your head".
Great job! I love this great Lennon song.... the history that goes with this song is amazing, too. Your video is way cool... the pictures are great, and the special effects ROCK! It's fun to watch and listen! :D :)
John was never afraid to 'vent his frustration' with a few acerbic lyrics and he's doing that here. Lyrically this is a masterpiece. Great song and very good video.

Great song nonetheless!

@SStoge21 I thought that this song was about john himself, not paul..?

It's sad that when I typed in How Do You Sleep jesse mccartney popped up... John Lennon should have popped up, not that loser.

John was never afraid to 'vent his frustration' with a few acerbic lyrics and he's doing that here. Lyrically this is a masterpiece. Great song and very good video.
