June is the sweetest person in the whole series. And she is the one who gets the rotten deal. Everybody else gets what they want in one form or another. She gets screwed not once but twice. Three times if you count when her dad walked out on her.
June is the sweetest person in the whole series. And she is the one who gets the rotten deal. Everybody else gets what they want in one form or another. She gets screwed not once but twice.
I think when people object to this Irene's looks, what they're REALLY objecting to is her severe lack of charm. I think she's a handsome looking woman-- not delicate or gorgeous but definitely of a type that could be appreciated by men. But she is SUCH a cold fish that it's amusing to see men being bowled over by her when there is just so little... *there* there. I can see her character working if only she had a little charm or wit or sparkle... but as it is, she comes off as as much too stiff!
@mariagonerlj Agreed. This Irene isn't ugly at all, but she's BORING. She's like a grey splotch that apologizes for her existence with every move she makes and speaks with a whiny voice. I find my attention wandering whenever she's on screen, so it is strange seeing her getting so much attention from the men!
"The past is like a foreign country. They do things differently there." This famous quote is very appropriate here because a lot of people are judging Irene by today's standards when it is so much easier for a woman to leave an unhappy marriage. Today, when more women than men are graduating from college, there are so many more avenues open. Women in the 19th century felt trapped, especially since the divorce laws still favored men.
@Ezrateach THANK YOU! Some of the comments on here are definitely viewing the character of Irene through a modern slant. Yes, she could have tried to meet Soames half way, but imagine you didn't even LIKE your husband. Imagine that he was selfish and cold and thought of you as an object. Would it be that easy to "make the best of it"? I'm not saying Irene is right and Soames is wrong--it is a mess they made together--but the Irene hatred shocks me a little.
@Ezrateach THANK YOU. You said everything I was trying to say but couldn't. Reading a lot of comments, it was very easy to spot people judging Irene through a modern outlook, in effect being narrow-minded.
Of course Irene got maried for the money. Women had little option in those days. They couldn't just go out there and start applying for jobs. They were mere possessions. Many people just forget this.
i think it's not about who's wrong and who's right.you have to manage what you've been giving and about self respect and effort.nothing is for free, marriage Is a contract.take it or leave it.irene is simply lousy.
Why this hatred against Irene? Yes, she married for money because she was pressured by her stepmother. And she clearly asked Soames to let her out of the marriage if it was not a succes. She is not a golddigger but a young girl being forced to live her life according to the wishes of her stepmother and husband. Soames is awful to her. No wonder she cannot love him.
Ugh seriously, I am so fed up with people bad mouthing the looks of Gina McKee. She's a wonderfully 19th century beauty, with her elegant profile, stunning eyes, incredible frame and way of carrying herself and that gorgeous hair. She is wonderful for Irene. She may not, in people's opinions, stand up to 21st century standards of beauty, but this is not set in the 21st century.
When Irene explains (at 5:47) that she "has no money and no means of obtaining any" she isn't joking. She isn't a "Real Housewife of..." Back then, there were very few paying jobs open to an upper-upper-middle class lady. If she were a little less grand maybe she could give piano lessons or be a governess but as it is her options are pretty bleak, through no fault of her own.
Gina McKee is a strange beauty - a calm and mournful loveliness that I find very attractive. She isn't your typical plastic blonde beauty or a classic dark one but a very intriguing sort - there is a hint of melancholy mixed with mystery and intelligence. The pale skin with the long dark raven hair and full lips - striking combination. If I were a guy in this series, I would definitely fall for her too - I can't keep my eyes off her as it is!!!
Irene or at least the actress playing her isn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination. Not to mention she only married for the money but I guess women didn't have much of a choice back then.
@stmarymead58 How he acts towards her!? As far as I can tell he is at least trying to me affectionate towards her to make their marriage work but she is not trying. Irenne decided before they got married that she did not love Sommes and made no effort after to make the situation work, she is cold towards her husband. What is worse is that she does not want to put any effort into her marriage but does not want to leave her husband because does not want to work and support herself. Horrible woman
@TheOzil55 What are you talking about, I am sure everyone here is aware that this is just a movie, We are just commenting on the attitudes and behaviours of the characters in the film. The only one here who is getting uptight about anything is you. If you are not going to share your impressions and feelings about the film then why are you commenting.
@trinapinks see what i mean? its ridiculous when someoe like you rants and wastes space typing out a whole paragraph to prove that you're right and everyone else is wrong. get a life. just trying to save you from looking like a miserable loner...

I know you shouldn't judge an actor's personality on the characters that they portray, but Damian Lewis just went down a notch in my admiration because of how Soames acted in this part. Don't get me wrong, I still respect Lewis and his talent, but he's so...cold in this show.
Poor, poor June, one thing I actually like about this series is its honesty about how some people are blessed by love and others get absolutely screwed.
The old aunt Anne said something very disturbing and embarassing about June's new boyfriend @ 1:56. Irene is asking for "separate bedrooms" is awful. How this musst hurt Soames. Poor Soames. June is right about "facing the evil" or truth about their marriage. June should not have told anybody about Irene problem. Bad, their marriage problem is out in the public now.
I did not know Vanessa Redgrave had a brother that acted.

she's not pretty or extrememly beautiful imo, but she is striking and unusual looking, but not plain or ugly.
very mournful looking.
