The top two toughest/most difficult team sports ranked by experts around the world are these two:
1. Ice Hockey. (Requires 2nd most hand-eye coordination. It also requires the most overall toughness.)
2. American Football. (Requires the most strength and has the hardest hits. It also requires the most toughest (Depending on position though))
No offense but rugby is ranked lower than tennis. I'm not joking. Personally, I believe rugby should be third right behind football, but it's not not.
Another group from the US Olympic Committee did the same research and they came out with a relatively similar results. Just google ESPN toughest sport and it should say "Page 2" or something like that.

But the fact the Germans don't play any contact sport at all should give you a hint about them, they love soccer. rugby was the american sport before football, hell footballs not even the american sport just americans adopted it, rugby was invented, they brought it to canada, and canada brought it to america starting college football, just americans have made it what it is by playing it so much instead of rugby, rugby could be this big instead of football easily, just it stopped being popular with our citizens since it was taken out of the olympics

To explain why basketball is above soccer, soccer involves lots of tripping...basketball involves elbows to the face that can seriously ruin your day. That is all.
Well damn. I'd say that lacrosse outdoes hockey...they wear almost no protection, and those pole-things (name, anyone?) are wicked. But I'd still put it beneath US football.

there have been several cases of rugby players dying. It just comes down to the way rugby players tackle. you have to wrap your arms around the other player otherwise its an illegal tackle. NFL can do what you like

It's the baseball hits that look the most painful. The NFL and NHL players have a lot of padding so you expect the hits but those collisions between the base runner and the opposing catcher look nasty, and they're at really high speed too. The catcher only has padding that is designed to protect him from stray pitches, not a 100 kg (220 lb) guy running at full speed! Ouch!

Ive played both rugby and football, both for competetive leauges. Football hurts WAY more. Rugby is no pads, yes, but you are so much more restrained, you cant hit the way you do with pads. pads enable you to make much more devastating hits than without. Both are tough without a doubt though, but you wont see the hardest hits in rugby.
If you are restraining yourself in rugby you aren't playing it right. Watch some NRL league games or some union world cup matches. Your response indicates why US players arent very prominent in world class rugby.

tackles might not be very entertaining but the game is. I watched Baltimore Ravens versus Indianapolis Colts last night and actual stretches of real play time were no longer than 4 seconds. there have been several cases of rugby players dying. It just comes down to the way rugby players tackle. you have to wrap your arms around the other player otherwise its an illegal tackle. NFL can do what you like

It's the baseball hits that look the most painful. The NFL and NHL players have a lot of padding so you expect the hits but those collisions between the base runner and the opposing catcher look nasty, and they're at really high speed too. The catcher only has padding that is designed to protect him from stray pitches, not a 100 kg (220 lb) guy running at full speed! Ouch!

anyone who thinks rugby is way more physical is just lain stupid. football players hit with way more force, but rugby plalyaers hit more often so in the end it all evens out the edge going to football. they just had a thing on fox sports about sports science and who hits harder. getting hit by a football player is like driving a car 35 mph into a brick wall. they exert like 4000 punds per hit compared to rugbys 1500.

Actually, according to sports science (it's a show that i've seen on fsn), the hardest football hits more than doubled the force of the hardest rugby hits. It was about 2,000 for rucby and about 4,800 for football. So rugby hits aren't necessarily bigger

Tell that to Andrew Sheridan. Ray lewis would'nt know what hit him if he actually lasted a full game of rugby without his crash helmet and girly shoulderpads. Some yank football players maybe big, but the're not tough or have anywhere near the stamina of a rugby player. Rugby is played full on for 90 mins. I'd love to see a yanky try to cope with that.

Ive played both rugby and football, both for competetive leauges. Football hurts WAY more. Rugby is no pads, yes, but you are so much more restrained, you cant hit the way you do with pads. pads enable you to make much more devastating hits than without. Both are tough without a doubt though, but you wont see the hardest hits in rugby.

ive seen my far share of games, actually.. im not saying the guys arent tough.. but a closeline is hardly a life-jeopardizing tackle.. the only aspect of rugby i would say is "more tough" than football is injuries.. in rugby you are more prone to injury, however, the hits arent nearly as devastating nor entertaining.. a closeline once or twice a game is hardly gut-wrenching..

tackles might not be very entertaining but the game is. I watched Baltimore Ravens versus Indianapolis Colts last night and actual stretches of real play time were no longer than 4 seconds. Followed by minutes of analysing a shit pass or 6 replays of how some dude carried the ball over the side line. There were adverts every 2nd frame!

i watched rugby games and i have to say i seen all of that in the parks out here in NY its just kill the man with the ball thats all.....Do u have any idea how hard football hits are and the fact that you need the equipment because your gonna get blind sided (dont see that in rugby because you can only lob the ball backwards O_O wtf?!?!) your also gonna get chopped (also not in rugby) and your gonna get laid out by blockers (also not in rugby)... :/
