All I ever see is videos and how to's about custom firmware updates! where can I find any info about just updating the firmware of a router to the latest version without bricking it! even the vids that claim to be the fool proof method still make a whole load of assumptions about what you know! all I want is a method of updating thats as simple as Windows OS updates and after all these years they still can't manage that?
First you're telling people how risky a firmware update can be, then you continue by recommending an OPEN SOURCE firmware....now that's what I call funny.
Linksys has a reputation to lose, the open source community has not.
WRT54GL is only worth it because it's the only currently manufactured router under the Linksys brand that fully supports DD-WRT. Really old versions of WRT54G also have the same hardware but as cost cutting measures the memory has been cut down and it makes the router as stable as surfing the web on a Wii (read unstable). Lack of memory makes the cheaper alternatives unsuitable for torrenting or any type of p2p filesharing. GL is also obviously much more stable than the newer G models.
I don't get why ALL flashable devices are not made, so that it for example always have a hardcoded firmvare version that it can always revert to, if you make a flashing mistake.
Or a functionality that lets you flash it, even with a messed up firmware, like some motherboards actually do.
That way you wouldn't have to be so scared and careful with flashing firmware! :)
Well, that would be nice, but it would mean paying a few more dollars for the unit, which means you probably would have bought the competitor's firmware-using device that does the same thing but costs less and doesn't have space for a backup image.
Further more..... No one forced you to try put an open source firmware on your router. If you weren't such a shit head I might have told you how to un-brick it. Now you can sit on it and rotate.
I use Tomato for my 11 machine home network giving access to one web server, one media server and several media boxes streaming from that media server to my tv sets. DD-WRT didn't do me well. It would have been okay if I hadn't beat on it so bad.
If you are going to be like that, and seeings how you don't even know how to spell "should" its no surprise you bricked your router. You probably couldn't read the wiki. You can throw your bricked router in the trash or you can send it some one who can make use of it. But come to think of you probably drooled all over it in a stuper so you can keep it. That is if your gonna be a shit head and be all like "and y the fuck showed I?"
got to like stupid questions like PAOLOCEBU..DUH,,, WHATS WITH DD-WRT?DUH.. WHAT CAN IT DO? YOU FUCKING RETARD WATCH THE VIDEO STUPID!! OR ATLEAST READ THE INFO,,INCREASES TRANSMIT STRENGTH ETC,,,
It basically makes use of until-now hidden features on you router. For example, there is a service that pays you to have people using your open internet connection, on every web page a bar will show up with ads, and having people see or click on them will get you payed. You can overclock your router so the signal can be higher, you can see other peoples mac addresses around you (including hot spots), Higher security, backups, bandwidth meters, the list is freaking endless.. Just be careful..
Is it possible to apply bandwidth throttling using this router ?
Often I want to allocate about 150kb/s to each of my 3 computers and leave the remaining bandwidth to my file sharing/serving computer because when I start my file share application -- web browsing is extremely slow even though my file share application is using less than 20% of available upload and download bandwidth.
I have a rubbish Sitecom WL-122
Do you know of any average priced routers that are good at bandwidth throttling ?
I don't know why you talk about it like its a very hard process all you really need to do is download the right file click upload, wait, reset and your done. It's fool proof. I think everyone should know that it's quite easy to do.
Some people select the wrong firmware for the wrong router and... bam, its a brick. Not for me or you, but for the completely mindless folk, it happens..
I use a pair of them as a wireless bridge with DD-WRT firmware. (set it to use WDS with WPA and using AES-PSK). You get about 27Mbit/s between them, at a distance of about 10 metres with a 1 inch wood door in the way. :)
This is very informative. The last comment was very funny. You sounded very enthusiastic about that one, LOL! I'm not a fan of wireless but I think I might try this with one of those routers and see if one of the firmwares has the ability to create more than one VLAN.
i dont think my problem has to deal with this video but i really need ur help or anyone i have been looking for the installer cd for the lynksys router and i cant find it anywere does any one know were i cold get one even buy one i have the same router WRT54GL i just need to install it pleae any one know were i could get that cd
Actually it was a pretty rookie mistake I made. I reset the router to the default configuration for the video, and forgot that the IP was reset also. As a result I had two access points giving out the same set of IP addresses. My wife saw the change and turned off the security on her machine to get the connection to work. This resulted in the routers giving out the same sets of IP addresses, one wasn't connected to the internet! I laugh now, but wasn't funny then. :)
I have the same 54GL and I just readed that first I have to upgradet with the mini version, due to a maximum of 3mb of uploading. After that, I can upgrade with any version isn it?
Whts with having a router unplugged so that it dosnt interefere with other one? Did u use different channels? Are ur antennas setup for optimal polarization?

Is everybody buying this one, pretty much just because of so many firmwares that can be used on it?
I actually just got one myself. Still checking how it works with just it's own firmware, before checking out Tomato and others.

dr07828 is crazy but right. By the way if you research and take the time to use dd-wrt you would love it and wonder how you did without it.
