  • LR is not a good brand. Once they get your $ u r SOL (shit out of luck!)

  • Over the years i have lived in the UK and USA and bought land rovers in both countries but i must say that the American Dealers are shit, hear in the UK they are prity decant but over in the us they don't seam to care, maybe it is because they can just blame it on the British, i don't know, but if you are in the US i advise against buying a land rover if you think the dealer will help you. One final note is that I have a 1976 Land rover 88 with over 300,000 miles on the clock that runs a treat.

  • haha right when I thought what else could go wrong the gas light came on

  • i had just watched the top gear where they take the suzuki , land rover and a toyota from the bolivian rain forest to the pacific coast on chile. and the land rover didnt have a single problem

  • Okay, first of all, if ur buying an old disco, only reason u wud buy one is 2 fix it up so dont complain u bloody idiot. i see that the steering wheel is on the left side. that means ur american. u bloody americans no nothin abuot land rovers

  • I also have a 99 Disco I. The electrical system do have a bad rep. It is made by a company called LUCAS & from what I've heard they are not the best. Usually about 7-10 years is when the sensors start needing to be replaced. Remember to do the usual stuff like change plugs/wires, fuel filter, etc & it should last a while. They are well built but the electricals are very "iffy".

  • @63gstone Lol if you've ever restored a British car you'll know all about Lucus electrics quality "cough".

  • I'd avoid any "exotic" car because they are dealer dependent. Stick with domestics and bread and butter Japanese types (Honda, Toyota).

  • Lol you bought a Land Rover, that's your fucking problem.

  • buy american, i have a pontiac with 290,000 miles on it

  • $30000 is more reliable

  • So much for the superiority of a fine british made vehicle. I wish jeremy clarkson could see this. All he used to yap about was how awful american cars were made. I agree with that sentiment somewhat depending on the vehicle but based on land rovers track record that calling the kettle black.

  • man not to bag on your car in any way, but I have heard nothing good about land rovers. You're basically paying for the 'land rover' name, not a nice vehicle. It's disgusting how they treat their customers.

  • ground or wire harness wiggle it unclip it

  • let me help you buy AMERICAN not import

  • @chevellenut1968 aremican cars are reliable ......

  • abs serial data line no ground

  • Least you didnt buy a VW or something, then you'd be stuck with an ugly, badly made car

  • my top picks for junk companys are ....

    1. volkswagen

    2. chrysler

    3. GM

    4. land rover

    5. ford

  • @JacenDex Is it necessary to capitalize every fucking word?!?

  • hmmm ok then i wouldn't bu an audi/VW

    either

  • yep next time buy a bmw

  • @MrToyotaVVTi umm newer Land Rovers ARE BMWs and are no better.

  • they are tata not bmw

  • For 1800 dollars you could have got an ordained stripper to perform an exorcism on that thing...probably would have ran better and saved you 800 dollars to boot* SUE THE BASTARDS

  • Its a Range Rover

  • Must be a Dodge Durango have the same problems.

  • This is what you get for paying $300 for a car that just runs.

  • Why would you let your gas tank get that low.

  • retard the needles dont work. you cant gauge anything.

  • A British vehicle with electrical problems.

    What else is new?

  • @watcher3223: You know what I've heard is worse? You average Kia. Now those ARE all around s***.

  • Well, relatively recently Hyundai has come around, taking Kia with them. They now make credible cars at the least.

But, of course, years ago, they were horrible cars, especially before they were bought out by Hyundai.

But, there are some cars from Hyundai/Kia I'd never like to own because they just look weird. The only ones I'd consider would be the Genesis, Sonata, or the Forte, and those cars have some stiff competition.

    Hope

    You

    Understand

    Nothing's

    Drivable

    And

    Inexpensive

  • As for my original quote about British vehicles with electrical problems, a weak point of European vehicles tend to be electrical. However, for a fairly long time, British electrics were especially bad.

Now, that reference may be anachronistic as electrical design in British (and European) vehicles have improved, but, IMO, European vehicles still tend to be a little weak in that department.

But, individual experiences will vary: one may have nightmares while another won't have any problems.

  • don't forget though, it's when BMW took over

  • @nedster01

What is the model year of this particular vehicle?

If it's 2000 or newer and before the Tata takeover, it's Ford.

But, whether this thing is Ford or BMW, that only indicates who held ownership of the company. It may not change where the vehicle was engineered, designed, and built as well as what component parts were used and where those parts came from (except the engines).

  • i think its about time you buy a TOYOTA LAND CRUISER !!

  • sounds like bad garage not bad car, all cars have the problems, land rover just have crap dealerships!!!!

  • My folks had a '95 Range Rover. They had problems out the ass with it, and the dealer was never able to diagnose nor fix them correctly. By the time they traded it in (late '99), almost all of the idiot lights on the dash were on, the clear coat was almost completely gone, and the car rattled like crazy.

    Never again.

  • @TransDerwinOverdrive: LMAO! Sounds like the average Hyundai :-p.

Sorry your folks had such trouble with the Range Rover. Mine have a '99 Ford Expedition.

We haven't had any major problems with it since we got it.

  • dammm man! 1847 dollars and you ended up with the same problem? daaam, keep us updated on what happen and if they fixed it or not if not get a law suit on them.

  • haha....my Land Cruisers never have problems, get one and you will understand why people who buy them always keep them and buy more, Land Cruisers are amazing

  • HAHA! 3800's suck! im sorry...iva had 3 so far, they have pussy trannys, intake mani gaskets keep goin, electrical probs up the wazoo and of coarse what gm calls their "thermal events" yea...ur car will randomly catch fire....I love em tho. when the wanna work properly

  • get Cometic MLS Gaskets it won't leak oil onto your spark plugs and cause fires use copper spray when putting them in

  • @tabaristewart bullshit they are one of the best vehicles ever made I have had 5 with over 260,000miles and they were still running when I sold them I have a 94 lesabre 290,000 miles still does burnouts!

  • i work at autozone, but ive been in school to be an auto tech for a year and a half now...but i had a similar problem in my grand prix, turned out to be the pcm...

  • bad dash ground, body control module, ecu, faulty cluster, fuse...that bout all ur options there

  • you are exactly right ,of course. You must be an expert in this field. You also see how far down this list you are. It was the "bad dash ground". Too bad you were not the mechanic in the first place! What do you do?

  • @dreemail2 i know how to take care of it throw a bomb in it. there problem solved lol

  • @dreemail2 bloody brit. much be all jacked up on malt vinegar! :-) Stupid thing had a fauly fuse/braker buried under the dash. I sold teh (polished) turd. Good riddance.

  • @dreemail2 bloody brit. much be all jacked up on malt vinegar! :-) Stupid thing had a faulty fuse/breaker buried under the dash. I sold teh (polished) turd. Good riddance.

  • @dreemail2 bloody brit. much be all jacked up on malt vinegar! :-) Stupid thing had a faulty fuse/breaker buried under the dash. I sold teh (polished) turd. Good riddance.

  • @tabaristewart should of driven it bout an hour to austin instead highest customer service in texas

  • fuse wire or something electrical

  • chrysler prob made it there good for electrical problem I know people with brand new dodge cars and there gauges just stop working after like 12,000miles

  • I am sorry for your frustration. Perhaps trying an American vehicle? :)

  • its not like american cars are known for their reliability, and they are made to be disposable. japanese or german is the answer

  • Actually, JDPower and Associates gives very good ratings for American vehicles.

  • youve never heard of the 3800. dont tell me thats disposable, thats just as reliable as any jap or german car

  • it's acutally good just imagine how many speeding ticket you can get away with it :P

  • CH! Yeah right! I am super poor and drive an old POS dodge neon and the speedo hasn't worked in years because of a gear breaking in the transmission. Was told it would cost 1700 to fix. Since the car is worth less than half that and I can't afford another, I keep driving it. I got a ticket and when I tried to plead my case I was yelled at like a 2-year-old and told it was a "poor excuse". Now I have a paper taped to the dash with the approximate speeds relative to gear and RPM.

  • look at the connections on the alternator to diagnose the problem with the odo, its strange for the abs light to be on wihout the TC and the HDC so i put that down to a lack of maintainence on the braking system rather than the usual water infiltration and overuse from leaving the hill decent on when its not needed. Learn how to treat and drive your landy properly before you buy one. landys are the most reliable trucks ever but dont expect to hop out of a ordinary car and everything to be fine.

  • Most realiable trucks ever? Ha!

They are better off road period.

  • land rovers used to be the most reliable but now now offence there pices of shit. there all style now

  • Master cylinder? Never heard of it.

  • Its a Buick engine.

  • Yeah but we (the Americans) were afraid of an all aluminum engine so Rover bought it.

  • The responses are AMAZING. "Duh, gee Wilbur, in Merica there is not as much off road driving to wear a vehicle" Thats why our cars can go 300k if the dumbass can maintain them though.

This guy learned the easy way that LR's and RR's are SHIT in this country, JUNK is is putting it mildly.

But hay it's "status"! "Honey don't I look cool?"

    Get a Land Cruiser... schmucks!

    Google "Lucas Prince of darkness"

  • You deserved to get in a crash for useing your damn camera with a car you know is crap

  • plz dont bitch its still a rover be happy u got a car

  • wow that really sucks to see that happening to your disco...i hope since that was 6 months ago that it is either fixed or gone. LRSA only has a coupld of guys that work there that are worth a damn, and most of them arent in the service department. I happen to know Billy Cavender (the owner) Personally and he is trying to talk a couple of true LR brit mechanics into transfering over to his shop. Hopefully he will get things straightened out so no one else will have this happen to them.

  • Ever heard of 'regular maintenance' ?

My 1995 'Disco' has 127,000 on the clock and because I take care of it , I'm rewarded by minimal bills BEFORE anything 'major' drops on me from a great height .

  • nothing against land rover, but what did you expect when buying a discovery with 125000.

  • beat it to death off road then give it to an x wife thats what I did

  • You mean beat it to death like you did your xWife?

  • Your thermostat control isnt working. You better get that fixed. Your engine is made of aluminum. It is overheats even for a couple of minutes you could be done for. Done for. As in goodbye Land Rover.

  • It's so nice that you just happened to have a video recording device on you.

The worn out leather on the steering wheel would indicate that your Disco is no where near new.

There's a reason that preventative maintenance is called "preventative maintenance". Preventative being the operative word.

  • It's a 99, who said it was new? I've done nothing but maintenance on that rig. That why it still runs. The point is it took LR SA nearly a month to trace down the electrical problem. It sounds like you are a loyal dealer stooge. Stooge being the operative word :)

  • I had a Disco I - put double the miles you've got on yours. My Disco II has been fine.

The ABS, TC, and HD relay or whatever is all tied together. If you lose one, they'll all come on.

  • "Dealer" would be the operative word. "Stooge" would be the adjective.

  • Maybe it would, if it were an adjective.

  • @dreemail2 Oh I love you man! Best comeback I have seen all day today. Its unfortunate (car problems with morons to fix them) thats why I have a mechanic that has done amazing work and I hope he stays in business forever! I will NEVER EVER EVER trust a dealer. In theory they SHOULD know EXACTLY what they are doing and how to fix it but the simple fact of the matter is you can only really trust them to change you oil.

  • What year is this? Model? How many miles? Please tell.

  • 99 Disco II 129K.....and regarding "video device" one me (above comment)...it's part of my cell phone!

  • How long have you owned the car? When did you purchase it? Used? If so how many miles? Someone could have driven it hard right before you got it. I have a 99 disco 2. This was the best year to get them (supposidly).

  • Okay look. You need to RUN AWAY FROM THE DEALOR. They have one master tech "supervising" 10-15 guys and you are just another number. Get an INDEPENDANT MECHANIC. Mine are both native Brits. The best guys go out on thier own. Not only cheaper then the shitty dealor but better quality service.

  • 99 DII ; no problems and 150k mi . Guess I got lucky, and the Brits didn't get plastered the night before building this one. Had the 'three amigos' (ABS, TDC, and HDC lights all lit up) but this problem went away when I replaced the crappy Wabco ABS Modulator. Didn't effect the motor / running condition in any way... ABS modulator was a $1,400 part ; however :P This truck isn't for folks whom cannot afford to fix them when they break, or maintain them at the dealer.

  • Hi. I have the same car same year and the same problem! They said the 99 was the most problem free. Is that true? The ABS unit was faulty. They will not refund the part and I have to pay double now. So far shade has been good to me but he'e turning 75 soon (75k) so I'm not sure it's going to do.

  • This reminds me of the sad story of Freddy the Freelander (now deceased). Head gasket blew - apparently very common.

  • ("I will have the coward call you.") ..this made me laugh!! .. Thanks for sharing, did it all work out at the end?

  • AlyaSama...this issue is still ongoing....i talked to a LR guru online and he said to "run-away" and find a mechanic elsewhere.....Thanks for laughing!

  • I'd sue them, it'd be a very clean and cut case.

  • I could have told you that a land rover is a piece of shit. All europeans cars are, including Benz. Some asians are too. I think I will have to make a video now.
