I live in the city, and know for certain that people living in squalor don't have their children taken away because of it, no matter what color. I couldn't honestly tell you how many make it past grade 10, can you, or are you going on hear say? As for what they study, it is well known that the reserves education system isn't up to par with the rest of Canada's, but it is controlled by the feds, not the band.

Do you know what happens to the revenue Canada extracts from our lands? 100% of it is invested back into a trust fund, controlled by Canada. which is where the money comes from that is allotted to Indian bands across Canada. The Attawpiskat band are the owners of Canada's largest Diamond mine, so they are producing something, and their is a 66 Billion dollar opportunity that comes with the mine.

Thing is Property is not owned by individuals on most reserves but belongs to the band it self which does pay a form of tax which is then placed into the Indian trust. @jethro035181 Air transport is "provided by the govt", but the cost comes directly from the funds provided to the band by the govt. same goes with the taxis. I couldn't honestly tell you how many make it past grade 10, can you, or are you going on hear say? As for what they study, it is well known that the reserves education system isn't up to par with the rest of Canada's, but it is controlled by the feds, not the band.

If this was any other race (white, black, asian, etc.) their children would be taken away from them and put in proper homes, Don't they want a better life for their children? Who cares what started it, it's not the past right now. It's today. The native community must endeavor to progress, and progress doesn't occur by blaming people and saying, "I was here first." It happens by getting an education, and helping your community by applying what you know in the way it's needed most.

Yes they were given a lump sum of money, but remember they have to use all this money for everything in their lives... this includes; water supply, food, clothing, making enough houses. a new school, and yes you must also realize they need some activities too. @kirokyukan even if you are "taxed" far more than we realize, it's still far less than we're taxed. and the money alotted to native bands does not just come from revenues accrued from reservation economic activity. Just because a mine is on their property, does not mean they're producing anything at all. You have to put labour into an activity before you produce. And it seems like little production is going on.

I pay the exact same amount of income tax for money earned off reserve. I pay the exact same property tax for property I own off reserve. If you travel to Europe you don't pay Canada taxes, so why should Natives pay tax to Canada for moneys earned on our land ie. Reserves? Do you know anything about the Indian trust and the monies Canada is currently "holding"?

Native communities are Indian land, not Canada, so why should we pay Canada taxes on Indian land? Discounts on education are given to just about anybody willing to look, so that point is moot. When I applied for funding from my band I was made aware that the band runs out of funds each year and that EI could help. No I havent been to university yet, but when I inquired to EI about the possibility of them funding me, I was told that yes it was possible with a high enough gpa.

Thing is Property is not owned by individuals on most reserves but belongs to the band it self which does pay a form of tax which is then placed into the Indian trust. Second thing is the lack of an economy on reserves, which makes our lack of income tax almost useless since we are usually employed off reserve.
