No one's probably gonna read this, but I’ll say it anyway cuz I feel at least 1 person will. I'm a young designer and graffiti artist, I know there's a million out there but I feel like my art has a unique individual style.
If you just take a min and give me a chance I'll make you a believer. I would love nothing more than to have a loyal following on youtube. If anyone who reads this could press the "THUMBS UP" others will see it. Just a simple button push will make a huge difference.
i believe this song is just a masterpiece. the chilling bassline, the cry of edge's guitar, larry mullens thunderous drum beats reminiscent of sunday bloody sunday, and then the beautifully written lyrics sung by bonos weeping voice. this is one of their most overlooked songs.
U2 don't have the guts to perform with raw emotion like this any more. This song is basically an "understated" Sunday Bloody Sunday - and is 100 times more powerful as a result.
I always have to laugh when guitarists say that The Edge isn't a good guitarist. He isn't a shredder, no - but what we are seeing in this video is absolute _mastery_ of guitar, end of story, full stop. Such great playing from everyone in this one.
The 1997 MTV Video Music Awards in Rotterdam. I happened to attend this by driving my DeLorean and using some plutonium to play a bit with the 4th dimension. Best night of my life. U2 Rulz!!
pop is probably the darkest and one of the most understated u2 albums of all time. would have been great to hear it actually finished how they wanted it. the only time they never got to do it as the fully wanted. please is probably the most political song u2 ever did. very misunderstood.
he`s talkin to a terrorist, the story is of a terrorist growin up, and bono talking to him, telling him he`s wrong.
but it explains the methodology of these people and how its born.
@callummcphail I'm hoping when they reissue POP that they finish the album the way they wanted. If the songs from Best Of 1990-2000 and LNOE and Please are any indication of what they wanted the album to sound like, I'll be very happy.
that was about 13 years ago but it still making that call in my ears. such a great album such a great lyrics such a great music such great vocal such a great bass drums and guitar and i can start it again. this album is getting better every year.. my love album i could never believe.Playboy Mansion Gone Sand Mofo Good Bad Love and Religion Hanging In The Air The Sun Like The Rain A Man And A Woman and Michael Jackson History No One Tells Me No Where Is The Faith I'm Not The Only One Do You Feel
I remember how U2 came out and owned the show that night with this song that few in the crowd even knew. The band managed to capture in 6 minutes what a U2 show is like.
The mediocrity of POP is the biggest and hollowest myth about U@..just compare POP with the last two albums..Pop is marks unique period of U2..GREAT album!
@Mmmacphisto last 2 albuns? are you sick? i think no line on the horizon was their only crap album, and they know the album is crap. but how to dismantle an atomic bomb is a great album.
Wow... I remember taping this song on VHS while I was watching the live show. I should still have it somewhere, along with the Rotterdam performance of Mofo (with introduction by Dennis Hopper!!)
I'm sure my recordings were better quality than this. Will see if I can post them both on YouTube soon...
rikiradish i was at the pop concert and this was the song that made the night. i hear a lot of u2 fans critisizing this album and how it is not like autung baby or joushau tree or....... but i thank u2 and other bands who do not get stuck in thier box of success and keep putting out music in what they think their fans or others want to hear. U2 has always come accross as a band to me that always put out what they love to listen too first. one of the greatest bands ever!
This song blew my mind. One of the greatest performances of all time. Touches on so many ills of the world. I'[ve spent the rest of my life heeding his plea.
I always laugh when I hear this brooding, monster of glorious sonic beauty and crunching uncompromising lyrics................
I laugh because their are still fools who say POP was a poor album.
POP was a caustic, ironic angry album disguising itself as slush. The name itself was irony dripped in sarcasm. The critics weren't bright enough to get it. They thought U2 had created a dance album. So I laugh - at ignorance.

Breathe, performed at Summerville theatre last year (small stage, no Claw, no baggage) was both Good and Cool, Magnificient on top of BBC tower (no Claw)both Good and Cool, Boots at the Brits (no Claw) was both Good and very Zoocentric Cool. 360 is what it is (for the newer fans who like the radio 'standards') but what 360 isn't is U2. And No Line songs have a life outside the flashy circus of the Claw. That said, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.
Your words are pure genius. .. And everyone, there is another video here on youtube of the same performance, but the video and especially the audio quality is much much better quality. Search "U2 Please 1997 MTV Video Music Awards".. you will feel it.
Very well said. As soon as I heard "Do You Feel Loved" I knew for sure. I saw them in Vancouver in '92 which was epic. 3 times on the Popmart tour. Just as passionate.
Why haven't they done a full throttle version of this since Popmart? It's awesome. They should also play Hold Me Thrill Me... again live. They were the best 2 new songs in Popmart.
This was not at the Europe Music Awards, i watched that show live and U2 performed MOFO. This was at the VMA´s of 1997, september of 1997 in New York City.
I get so caught up in this song at 3:07 when Larry starts up with the drum beat from "Sunday Bloody Sunday". It just builds, and builds, and builds. Bono's voice is desperate, Edge's guitar cries, Larry's drums are militaristic, Adam's bass cresendoes...probably one of the best live performances I've seen from them.
Pop and Zooropa are the most experimental albums I've heard from any rock band in my 26 years. Next is Achtung Baby.. Then Radiohead's Kid A, Amnesiac are good too. Blur's Think another is another masterpiece. I wish Goo Goo Dolls will do the same path.
It's simply impossible that music gets any better than this. When I listen to it, I sometimes forget to breathe. I don't understand that I never saw this video any earlier. It took me 12 years to discover it! I do remember having seen the official video, but never this live version. Thanks for posting it!
perfect description...I thought I was the only one who forgot to breathe :) I remember this performance so well..my mom came to my room to let me know U2 was on tv - if I cared to watch :) Edge's guitar is just out of this world in this song...in my opinion , it's the guitar that stops my breath every time :)
I'm really happy to get a reaction from someone who feels the same, while listening to this song! It feels good, that I'm not the only one. You are probably right: when the Edge hits it off with his guitar, my breath stops. But from the start, Larry's drums and Adam's bassline build up the tension to this climax. And then Bono's voice, begging to stop.... what more can I say? It's just perfect.
Incredibile il mio primo album, mi ricordo come oggi il record di presenze a Reggio Emilia, 200.000 persone. Grandi! La mia prima giovinezza.

indeed this video is from mtv video music awards, in 1997 at Ahoy Arena from Rotterdam U2 sang the unforgettable "Mofo" which is one of the greatest performance ever seen at mtv awards and unfortunately was removed from youtube, nevertheless this astonishing performance of "please" showed that U2 is a huge band
