Although they do sound different, they use the same vowels: A E I O U. Also their pronounciation seems to be based similarly. For example, although English speakers will pronounce Konnichiwa (Japanese for Hello), Konni-chiwa. The Portuguese, based on their language will pronounce it Ko-N-Ni-Chi-Wa which is the correct pronounciation. That's pretty much what I learned.
