I really enjoyed it. I would like to agree though, more soul in the song. I'm no actor, at least not professionally. I just think that it would have been even MORE enjoyable with some more soul.
He is a little lacking in emotion, but at 17 he's unlikely to have the life-experience this requires. He has a fantastic voice and is a good looking lad - there's some definite talent there! Good luck in your future career!!!!
i think his voice is very good....but i have to say that he looks as thought he THINKS this is wat sadness is suppose to look like.. but not really feeling it! and altho u can hear that he is tryin to put some emotion in the sound.. u can also hear the missin passion is... and its seems really rehearsed.. not liek he is really feelin it that much.. but i think that is jsut becasue of age...this character is alot to ask of a 17 year old..soo i think he should keep tryin cus there is talent there!
whatever you people can critisise all you want but it does take guts to get up in front of an audience and sing such an emotional song. I say good job just for getting up there, sure its not perfect but its not professional, its a high school version.
the first line is "there's a grief that can't be spoken"
that means you have to portray a tremendous greif in your actions and tone of voice. you have an awesome voice, just a lack of emotional connection. I, too, am 17yo
great job on this song although i do have to agree with some other comments. Marius has just lost his friends and is grieving the actor has to show this. also he sounds like he is singing through his nose in some parts.
He has a better pop voice, rather than a broadway voice. I also agree he needs more passion. Look for Doug Kreeger singing Empty Chairs and empty tables to see what passion is.
I disagree with the comments that his singing had no passion. It wasn't very emotional, but I think the orchestration (if the sound balance on this video is accurate) is 50% to blame cos it sounds completely dead. If he'd sung with any more dramatic flair he would have left the orchestra behind and sounded like he was ranting.
And I don't think the note that he changed was a tough note (well it wasn't the highest note in the song anyway). Maybe it was done for "artistic" reasons? :p
yes i agree with the person below me....great voice but absolutely no passion or feeling...i was marius in my schools production and hands down you have more talent but i know that for that song you MUST put your soul into that character...also i wish i could have heard you attempt those tough notes i'm sure you could have hit them
One of the things I just love about YouTube on this sort of stuff is how many truly brilliant actors there are out there who are better than everyone else. I'm sure that Olivier would have given you a standing O and cried that he was never the actor you are.
Thank you for gracing us. How can we possibly thank you for those penetrating insights from high school? Those of us who have been in the business for 30 years thank you from the bottoms of our hearts.
He has no passion. He has a good voice, but no passion at all. He doesn't feel it! He doesn't understand the pain of loss, and if he does, he doesn't show it. Good voice, but no passion, and no technique. This is constructive criticism. You have natural talent. If you work at it and learn to slip into the character, you'll blow us all away.
it wasnt terrible, he was pretty much a wimp at the big hits though, it was probally the worst school version Ive ever heard. Bash Les Mis Marius is better

nice work, but you should push more, especially at became that last communion. You re scared to be flat. And that appears a bit too much that you re homosexuel. When you act, forget about who you are. Be more masculine.
You are an absolute moron. Calling him feminine and bland by trying to pass it off as a complement? What a jackass.
Kid...you did a great job. You have an excellent voice and I hope that you continue to train your instrument. I won't prejudge your sexuality based upon your acting in a 3 minute song. I'm not an asshole like this poster.(not that it would matter either way)
ARE YOU SERIOUS? I said that he did a great job, that for a 17 years old it s pretty good. That sometime he look scared to reach some high notes, and that he looked too feminine for marius, in his attitude. That s NOT a fucking insult! Every man has a part of feminity in himself, but some men has bigger.... and that s ok like that. But I don t think it s the best way to act Marius. THAT S ALL
I think you just have a fucking problem with you re sexuality. anyway, "kid", I dont want to pass off anything for a complement, I really think you have talent!
This is an excellent song. I believe you have the idea. I think you did a great job. The facial expressions and emotion was superb. However, I think for this song, and I sense that for your voice in general, you need to push for more power. You have to pipes...use them! Bravo!
It is great job from a 17 year old boy, Congrats! Good look stoo, he has great potential... Remind me of the guy who originally played Marius in the Hungarian version...though he was much older...
I think he has a good voice but but his word ending trail horribly. I agree he'd be a great Joseph but Les Mis is too strong a musical for him. You need a classical voice for this song.
I've seen and participated in many productions, and for this 17 year old, I say that he's got the combo of good voice and good looks that can charm the audience (esp playing the protagonist. On this particular clip, the only disappointment is that he didn't take advantage of the range of this song to fluxuate his emotion/richness in tone/volume/etc, unless he was directed by the director to sit still and maintain the same tone throughout the song (pity!). Other than that, very nice job.
eh i think the poppy stuff is excusable, cause when ur in high school it's hard to avoid that sound. you have a nice voice. ur vibratto sounds a lil' forced though. but who cares..still nice!
Excelent Pitch for a 17 year old. Awesome job! I do have to agree im not a huge fan of pop sounding singers doing les mis, But he would make a fantastic Joseph! I could see him singing Close every do to me extremely well! Great singing.

Is this a song mostly for tenors or like lyric baritones?
piinoieboiie 1 year ago
@piinoieboiie
I would have to say that for most baritones a G is a prime note. So, I would have to go with maybe even the Helden Baritone.

I love his voice! He really puts the sadness but also beauty in the song.
He's very handsome too.
This song always makes my eyes fill up.
It's so creepy when they appear behind him. They really do look like ghosts or phantoms.
