I really like the idea, but that also would be an opportunity to use it as a sweet dish, when you simply add sugar. Or not? I might try it out and tell you if it tastes well :D
From the look of it, that isn't 'pumpkin' as we over here in the america's think of it - but rather what we call "green winter squash".
It has a different flavour than the large orange (or white) squash which are specifically pumpkin-squash, out here. (I like both, so I wont complain, but I think perhaps it should be noted for those not familiar with squash varieties.)
@PurpleGhost thank you very much! i noted it large and changed my title to "japanese squash" since i heard it for many times after i uploaded this video and forgot to update it. thank you again <3 please tell me anything if i get wrong. so the pumpkins are ones for halloween?!
@ochikeron - No problemo! :D I mentioned mostly because they have a different taste, they aren't as sweet (in my opinion) as the green-winter-squash, so that would change the flavour of the recipe.
And yes, "pumpkin" squash are the ones used for jack-o-lanterns at halloween.
I will keep a look out, and tell you when if notice anything! ;)
this looks really interesting.. thank you for sharing your original recipe.. i think i will try it, my daughter is a really picky eater, i think she will like this..
this looks really tasty, and i never thought about eating pumpin as a savory dish. i want to try and make this but i would probably make it as a dessert.
@funbingbing i am using national NESS30A which has a steam function (i seldom use the steam though). i think there are many better ones these days and those are called Steam Microwave Oven and i think Panasonic's bistro is (was) pretty popular but not sure what is popular now.
@kashdollaz thank you for your question. i think kikkoman is well known and mostly used. BUT, I personally recommend "dashi soy sauce" from Kamada. I have the detail on my "Lady Gaga Bento" video description. They also have sashimi soy sauce and many other kinds, but regular dashi soy sauce is good at everything :D Anyways, you can of course use kikkomoan for any cooking as well as sushi/sashimi!
You could use unflavored galatin as well. We dont have much access to agar powder in the states, outside of a lab. We use agar here for growing cultures in a petri dish.
@TheRuuchanchannel There is not a lot of liquid, so maybe start with 3/4 teaspoon, possibly working up to a full teaspoon. It looked fairly firm,so this should do the trick. If you wanted this as a dessert, add some sweetener, to taste, and pumpkin pie spice. Top with whipped cream. Japanese pumpkin pie! Yum!
OMG! I was told it was ill-mannered to put wasabi and soy sauce in the same dish! Keep them separate! Although, I admit to doing it! LOL i love wasabi, and, if it hits the right place on your tongue, can be a bit much. Mixing with soy sauce ensures an even coat. i just hope that they dont think I'm white trash, at my local sushi buffet. LOL Was that a butternut squash, as it was not pumpkin, as we know it here, in the USA?
@mrpig2u wasabi. really?! hehe oh, you are right! it's a squash (kabocha)! i wonder why we call it pumpkin though it's a squash in the dictionary... hmm
@dignansgirl oh, i think it doesn't go right... the texture is different. but i never tried with it, so you can try :) make sure you don't boil the gelatin just melt otherwise it won't firm up.
This is a very cool recipe! It's not as weird as it sounds really. I often have kabocha broiled in soy sauce! The sashimi part just sounds weird. Good job!
@shurubie13 this recipe, i wrote on the other reply but it's like eating avocado with soy sauce :D i'll try to include how my dishes taste like in future videos in the beginning!
I didn't know sashimi could be something other than fish. This is a really interesting idea. I've never been a huge fan of pumpkin but this could be interesting to try. How does pumpkin and soy sauce taste together?
Interesting.

is it sweet tasting
KingMiks 1 month ago
@KingMiks it is naturally sweet with kabocha flavor but not like dessert ;) you eat with soy sauce, so the final taste is more like sashimi.
