However most networks where this kind of attack would take place are now immune to these. E.g my router under the DDoS/DoS defence has anti smurf attack etc. Was a very good attack though.

Besides that fun fact, you spoofed a wireless ip not an external ip. Assuming you were trying to make yourself obscure from someone else over the internet and not your parents whom are on the wireless network at home.

Spoofing an IP address really does nothing, its the MAC that ids your computer to the ISP provider, so if you were to in fact do something malicious like launch arbitrary denial of service attacks against a network with a fake MAC address then there is no hard evidence that it was ever really you that did it. The reason being that the MAC is the address of your hardware or (wired router) which is in turn tied to you ISP account that has your home address.

@MrSiebel actually your MAC is recognized by your router (if using one) and is used to share information between computers on your network. When you plug in your cpu to the router (or wireless connection) your computer gives its MAC to the router and any computer that wants to reach yours says "I'm trying to reach JOE at MAC address (hexadecimal)" and reply comes back with "IP is (32 bit address)"

You can spoof your internal IP and your MAC address and trick the router into believing you are him. Therefore, free WiFi at your local coffee shop...

You've got to have raw sockets support in order for most of the nmap scans to work. Windows XP (as of SP1) does NOT support raw sockets. Microsoft disabled it so that the script kidos wouldn't be running rampant. As for Vista, I have no idea with it, but I would suspect it is the same way. It's gay running nmap on any Winblows version. I curse Fyodor for ever porting it to Winblows in the first place.

Hey spud what you got to is download nmap its the first link i think and you extract it then you put it in to your c: or what ever on xp its located in your computer(my computer) save all the files includeing the namp thing in c: and then go to cmd and type namp and if it comes up with all the commands then you got it if it doesnt just say it didint work or something like that k :)

nmap is just one of many tools you can use to sus out someone's computer/network. Among other nifty features, it can show you what kind (and possibly version) of OS is running on a machine and what ports are open.

It's not so much what can nmap do but what can you do with the information nmap provides you with.

I sugest you read the man page.

Look at stuff like john the ripper, netcat... try programs like tcpdump/wireshark, watch the packets and learn.

Probably the BEST thing you could do is learn how TCP/IP operates. Not just learn it. Live, eat, sleep, breath, shit TCP/IP for several years. Read the RFCs.

But after doing all this, if you stick with it, hopefully you'll have a greater appreciation for the computer/network and won't want to hack other people's belongings.

Now you do realize that you will NEVER get a response from your scanned host because you have no legitimate route back to your machine with just any ip out of thin air inserted in nmap. You must use an ARP poison on your local network end in your subnet as your ip to "spoof", only then will you have a true response able to be sent back to your machine because you will have a legitimate ip and route for the target to come respond to.
