These Pommy twins took a little maintainence to keep them going there best but they were real fun to ride I spent hours getting them to run sweet and they gave me lots of pleasure, corners and mountain roads made me do a lot of smiling also lifting the front wheel a the lights, I sure do miss my youth.
@hawkwind999...... thats fine, leave them to people who know and love these old classic bikes....you most likey don't know any thing about them anyway.
@LaRazaBakeSale 3 things = Mechanical, electrical and fuel!! i found the haynes manual had the wrong specs at the back of the book for the carbs. try adjusting the needles. the higher the clip on the needle the leaner it will run. also check the jet sizes and make sure the air filters are flowing and make sure enough spark is getting to the plugs. proper electricity to and from the coils. ignition timing and points aswell. good battery. no wires from the alternator grounding out.
Hi I am Hasan i have a 1940 model BSA but it is not working bcoz of a part which i think is a magnet which generates electric current, plzzzzzzzzzzz help me out, Any one see this comment and can help me plzzzzzzzzzz contact me on my Email ID which is hasan_malik64@yahoo.com
Love your bike! Im a fellow enthusiast, I own a BSA 1969 Rocket 3, Id love to own a 69 Lightening as well...if your ever interested in selling your bike please let me know. Im not normally into custom bikes but yours is absolutely gorgeous.
when youve done a few miles do the tappets at 2th in and 4th exhaust it really helps also give it a bitmore advance on the spark . when you do the timeing go around more than once i used a continuity light so that I knew it was perfect. these pommy twins are fast but only if every thing is spot on. I had a lot of them In my youth and always had the the farsted but it was easy , just get every right
If that was a harley you could call it a refectaglide with all that chrome.Chrome dont get you home.....But it sure looks good. I had a bsa bantam when I was a kid and even then I didnt like it after a couple of triumphs I had a 68 thunderbolt I had a lot of fun on that bike I could wheelstand better than all my mates, one thing that bike did was the bottom cyl bolt came loose it made a noise like a steam train and sprayed oil. they were good times
The tank is completely chromed. I was going to paint the top blue but it looked so good. As for the valves; I think they are inherently noisy. I keep the gap at .008 and .010 as I have heard of guys losing their rods at higher revs (most likely due to poor maintenance). I actually like the noise. I've just had the crank balanced and the bike has just gained a new life. I'm planning on a video here of it at speed up in the mountains. Look for it in the next month!
You have a real beauty there!! Is that tank completely chromed? I have a 69 lightning also and wanted to ask you if you think your valve train noise is normal or excessive.I can't eliminate mine without making them too tight and the pushrods are in good shape so it is not them making the tapping noise.Could get louder pipes I suppose(ha ha)
Nice Bezre, love the tank. Thanks for posting your vid.
In 1970, as a PFC in the army stationed in Germany, I scrimped n saved my $153 a month and purchased a new 1970 Lightning from FA Breez in Longstule for a tad over 800 bucks. I had it air freighted home n still have it covered up in the garage. Sad to say I have not ridden it in a decade + I suspect. Also, mine did not leak a drop n it spent winters in the corner of my living room.....
Beautiful machine!...yes Jap bikes are good but this is a Real motor bike it looks and sounds like one!....have you added extra chrome?.all looks great any how I haven't riden a bike for many years but you don't loose the "bug"...if I do buy another it would be a British bike to go with our Series 3 Xj6 ..... I was born in Manchester.
I had one for years, man & I kept it in my living room at night - with no oil pan required... Probably just as well you're a jap biker... Those jap bikes & your type took the soul out of biking...
kno wot u mean about soul..i had a sportster for a while..soo much character i miss it..the japs make good un's but biking is going the wrong way..faster faster faster etc...its not about speed...its about enjoyment..and something you can repair yourself in a shed at home..not jus bolting on loads of anodised shyte.. classic racers for me EVERY time...was jesting about the oilpuddle but its notfar from thetruth..
I liked the way you stopped it, they do do that. It's a lovely bike. Have you run it enough yet to see what difference the cam makes? Is it a very big grind?
Nice Ride! What kind of pipes do you have? I saw these restored to original beauty over in England.
