Belker had arrested someone who went crazy in the squad room. During the struggle, Chief Mahoney jumped on Belker who fought back without realizing he was hitting a superior officer. Mahoney pulled Belker off the street and confined him to the squad room. In this episode, Belker was running an errand and arrested someone.
@TheLastOfTheFinest80 yeah, I know that Chief Daniels had his moments of vindictiveness (trying to get Furillo to throw Goldblume off the force) but Mahoney was much worse. But, IIRC, Daniels' alienation of Mahoney was one of the reasons why Daniels lost the mayoral election to Ozzie (sic) Cleveland. I wish they'd put season 4 of HSB on Hulu because I haven't seen the episode 'Grace Under Pressure' (which was a tribute to Michael Conrad) since it first aired.
I have been in military law enforcement for a long time and Captain Furillo is the leader that I judge all my supervisors by. This was a great show of leadership. The best part is how Capt. Furillo positions himself between his supervisor and his men prior to telling the joke.
This was, Ladies & Gents, IMHO, THE very best TV series made. Hands-down, week in & out, acting, story, directing & characters--THE best, ever. This was a show I planned my life around--that's how good it was. My favorite character? Dennis Franz--As Buntz--my main man, & my hero! Buntz for President! Wolfsky9, 64 y/o
I would rather watch just a few minutes of this wonderful, charismatic show than any of the new season so called entertainment of the main channels. There just seems to be no writers with any talent anymore. Perhaps we are all caught up in the "political correctness" crap or maybe Hollywood's liberal nut cases don't have any ability except just push their very liberal agenda. "What a World; what a world".
I used to watch this each week at a friends house in 1981 and the group soon grew to about 40 of us. Even off duty cops came over to watch. 9 pm on Thursdays. One night we had four on duty squads drive over and watch it. What a following this show created. Great memories.
The cars are Chicago colors and graphics. Many of the street names and neighborhood references etc. are taken from Buffalo where producers Tony Yerkovich and David Milch are from.
@ciriel It was supposed to be a combo of every tough city in USA. The intro was shot in Buffalo, NY. There are references in the show to Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Philly, and Pittsburgh, and NYC Police Departments. The cars resemble Chicago PD and the uniforms have Detroit and NYPD in them
i watched this show religiously on tv back in the day and i dont remember this bit! for a cop drama it still rates as one of the funniest shows on tv.remenber the mechanical alligator in the sewer? i damn near wet myself!
The first serie i used to see by tv in the midnight when adolescent 1985...trying to run to anyway when troubles in my home...well...now i am a figther
if you could tell me where seasons 4-7 are that would be great, all we got now are re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re - runs!
@km2711 It was the fourth season, but you may be right as far as this episode being on your library rental. Lots of those seasonal DVD's of a season usually have a bonus episode from another season.
Unfortunately I was born too late to be able to follow this show, but I have some great memories of sitting on the couch over at my grandparents watching reruns of it with my grandfather (who loved the show). Hill Street Blues' intro theme always sticked with me for some reason.. Anyway, this joke definitely had me laughing out loud and I'm certainly going to use it myself some day.. :)
Thanks so much for this clip, I've watched it a dozen of times already. I didn't miss HSB for anything and remember feeling so sad when it ended. The finest US show ever with laughter and sadness in each episode. They don't make them like they used to, I must be getting old!! 47, yes I am :)
Ah! What a great clip from one of the best shows ever! The 80's were made for me, due to this show; I never missed it and have the first 2 series on DVD; Nowadays I watch The Mentalist and Lie to Me, both quality shows; but there was something magical about The Hill and the cast.
I had a job interview in the early 80's and told my prospective boss that I HAD to be off work by 9PM every Thursday, no exceptions. When he asked me why, I told him,"Hill Street Blues is on at ten."
He laughed and said,"I don''t miss it either. Not once."
Brilliant; probably the only time Furillo ever told a joke during the series. He was always so serious; it seemed out of character for him to make the other cops laugh.
Simply the best police show of ever. All the 1990's American police shows are a weak imitation. The script, the great cast and the wonderful storyline was first rate.
Great TV show i loved it then and still do. I remember when the theme tune to this show was released onto a single and was in the music charts here in the UK. Was more real life than a lot of cop shows on TV now. Thanks for posting this.
