  • furillo you're the best!....

  • The high crime section of Pittsburgh at the time was called the Hill District

  • I still laugh after all these years

  • it was set in Cleveland

  • @aloysius3520 Wrong. It looks more like Chicago.

  • @aloysius3520 WRONG. It looks more like Chicago.

  • Awsome clip, this was a fantastic show, need more like this nowadays.

  • this was great tv drama and Veronica Hamiel was beautiful

  • What did Belker do, bite someone?

  • @scorpietta He likes to eat raw onions..

  • @dodgeboykev LOL!!!

  • @scorpietta

Belker had arrested someone who went crazy in the squad room. During the struggle, Chief Mahoney jumped on Belker who fought back without realizing he was hitting a superior officer. Mahoney pulled Belker off the street and confined him to the squad room. In this episode, Belker was running an errand and arrested someone.

  • @airdriver Thanks! He was the predecessor to NYPD Blue's Det. Sipowitz (Sp?).

  • Deputy Chief Mahoney was such a douchebag prick that not even Chief Daniels wanted a thing to do with him

  • @SheriffTankStoner both of them were pretty much a cut off of the same cloth.

  • @TheLastOfTheFinest80 yeah, I know that Chief Daniels had his moments of vindictiveness (trying to get Furillo to throw Goldblume off the force) but Mahoney was much worse. But, IIRC, Daniels' alienation of Mahoney was one of the reasons why Daniels lost the mayoral election to Ozzie (sic) Cleveland. I wish they'd put season 4 of HSB on Hulu because I haven't seen the episode 'Grace Under Pressure' (which was a tribute to Michael Conrad) since it first aired.

  • I have been in military law enforcement for a long time and Captain Furillo is the leader that I judge all my supervisors by. This was a great show of leadership. The best part is how Capt. Furillo positions himself between his supervisor and his men prior to telling the joke.

  • This was, Ladies & Gents, IMHO, THE very best TV series made. Hands-down, week in & out, acting, story, directing & characters--THE best, ever. This was a show I planned my life around--that's how good it was. My favorite character? Dennis Franz--As Buntz--my main man, & my hero! Buntz for President! Wolfsky9, 64 y/o

  • @Wolfsky9 Buntz was an awesome character but I think the best one out of everybody had to be Belker played by Bruce Weitz

  • Furillo's office...

    Let's be careful in there.

  • I would rather watch just a few minutes of this wonderful, charismatic show than any of the new season so called entertainment of the main channels. There just seems to be no writers with any talent anymore. Perhaps we are all caught up in the "political correctness" crap or maybe Hollywood's liberal nut cases don't have any ability except just push their very liberal agenda. "What a World; what a world".

    Rodney Wayne

  • @cush1102 I second that Mr. Wayne

  • Oh, Hill Street BLUES... police are blue and the blues. OMG I got it!!!!

  • classic

  • I used to watch this each week at a friends house in 1981 and the group soon grew to about 40 of us. Even off duty cops came over to watch. 9 pm on Thursdays. One night we had four on duty squads drive over and watch it. What a following this show created. Great memories.

  • Does anyone have video of the episode when Hill and Renko drank the tea laced with marijuana? Email me at jfootdale@live.com

  • many of the street names, neighborhood references etc. were from Buffalo which is producers Tony Yerkovich and David Milch hometown.

  • The cars are Chicago colors and graphics. Many of the street names and neighborhood references etc. are taken from Buffalo where producers Tony Yerkovich and David Milch are from.

  • GREAT Scene! Great seeing LaRue, Washington, Renko, Belker and Furillo again. :)

  • furillo you are the best!....

  • They never say, but I think it was Chicago or Pittsburgh... Something like that.

  • chicago and los angeles i think....

  • @ciriel Always wondered if it was the Bronx(?).

  • @ciriel It was supposed to be a combo of every tough city in USA. The intro was shot in Buffalo, NY. There are references in the show to Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Philly, and Pittsburgh, and NYC Police Departments. The cars resemble Chicago PD and the uniforms have Detroit and NYPD in them

  • This show was the best. Which city was this supposed to be set in?

  • @stargell777 itwas supposed to be PITTSBURGH

REF;the hill district there and where BOCHCO and

Charles Haid went to PITT university.

    Filmed however in Northwest area

(see the OLD STYLE BEER) LOGO IN OPENING SCENE.

  • I don't think there was a funnier moment on the show. One of the classics!!

    -The cornball

  • I like JDs reaction during the joke, he obviously knows the punchline and is trying to keep it together...lol

meanwhile Renko just looks on dumbfounded lol

  • Watched this thousands of times;each time I've laughed harder than the time before.

  • loved this show back in the 80's

  • I interviewed Bruce Weitz ( Sgt. Michael "Mick" Belker) he is such a nice person and down to Earth.

  • that was genius

  • Agreed! Thumbs up!

  • @wasteland70

    No pun intended?

  • i'm gonna use that joke on my pals at work

  • To Hell with the wire, this was the best show ever,no doubt about it

  • i watched this show religiously on tv back in the day and i dont remember this bit! for a cop drama it still rates as one of the funniest shows on tv.remenber the mechanical alligator in the sewer? i damn near wet myself!

  • Best show ever.

  • I was trying to think up old shows. Haven't seen this since it aired!

Thanks for posting this C. :)

  • that is actualy a pretty funny joke, nice one frank

  • I was just a kid back then but always loved this show with passion. Still one of the best ever!

  • The first serie i used to see by tv in the midnight when adolescent 1985...trying to run to anyway when troubles in my home...well...now i am a figther

  • This show IS STILL the best ever!

  • i dont think this was season 2 or 3 and i dont think all of the 7 series are out and even if they are fox owns them and thats that

  • yeah, but there are things called reruns. I think... :)

  • if you could tell me where seasons 4-7 are that would be great, all we got now are re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re - runs!

  • @harpozzz you're lucky....We don't even have reruns here...wish we did. I have Season 1 & 2 on DVD

  • I think this is one of the many times where Capt. Furillo sticks up for the men under his command!

  • "Hill Street Blues" reruns are on every night on a cable network called AVN. Really great stuff... what an excellent show.

  • Hill Street was/is still GREAT. Do you have more clips from the show? I'd like to see more.

  • Yes--this was a great piece--Frank giving it to his superior!

    ----------------

However, I recall this from SEASON 2--only because I rented both Season 1 and 2 from the Library--and this definitely was in one of them...

  • Nope, it's really season 4 - 3rd episode.

  • @km2711 It was the fourth season, but you may be right as far as this episode being on your library rental. Lots of those seasonal DVD's of a season usually have a bonus episode from another season.

  • Just the best

    Thanks

  • Yes, it was great. It's great, still.

  • Unfortunately I was born too late to be able to follow this show, but I have some great memories of sitting on the couch over at my grandparents watching reruns of it with my grandfather (who loved the show). Hill Street Blues' intro theme always sticked with me for some reason.. Anyway, this joke definitely had me laughing out loud and I'm certainly going to use it myself some day.. :)

  • You can catch the 1st 3 seasons on HULU online.Hopefully they will add all the seasons!Great show

  • You can get the whole series on dvd.

  • There were many memorable scenes over the years and this one is definitely one of them. Thank you for posting it.

  • Thanks so much for this clip, I've watched it a dozen of times already. I didn't miss HSB for anything and remember feeling so sad when it ended. The finest US show ever with laughter and sadness in each episode. They don't make them like they used to, I must be getting old!! 47, yes I am :)

  • What a great era in time for TV music so much talent HSB, Taxi, SNL, Soap

  • You're more than welcome!

  • ROTFLMFAO! Oh man that is a classic clip. I have gotten so much mileage out of that joke over the years. Thanks for posting.

  • Best series on tv ever.

  • brilliant! this and NYPD Blue are the best cop shows bar none!

  • Why cant we see a clip of the intro? Michael Conrad - Brilliant at roll call.

  • There are clips of the intro on YouTube. Search for it and I'm sure you'll find one :)

  • JD's laugh had me in stitches the first time I saw this!

  • Yeah, the guy cracks all the time lol He's very funny.

  • Unfortunately WAS very funny! Kiel Martin died in '90. He was Dean Martin's former son-in-law prior to this show.

  • Yes, I remember reading about his passing. Nasty stuff... Still the character lives.

  • Ah! What a great clip from one of the best shows ever! The 80's were made for me, due to this show; I never missed it and have the first 2 series on DVD; Nowadays I watch The Mentalist and Lie to Me, both quality shows; but there was something magical about The Hill and the cast.

  • I agree, and I also like "THE MENTAL CASE!"

  • I had a job interview in the early 80's and told my prospective boss that I HAD to be off work by 9PM every Thursday, no exceptions. When he asked me why, I told him,"Hill Street Blues is on at ten."

He laughed and said,"I don''t miss it either. Not once."

    I got the job.

  • He had good taste. Cool story!

  • Reagan-era TV....80's TV SHOWS FOREVER!!!

  • this is a great show to watch.even though its old,its a gem of a show.,took me 2 shows to get in to it.

one of my fav ploice dramas.

  • Brilliant; probably the only time Furillo ever told a joke during the series. He was always so serious; it seemed out of character for him to make the other cops laugh.

  • It was worth the insubordination charge.

  • I love the way Furillo sticks it to that balding hard-arse Deputy (Dawg) Police Chief Dennis Mahoney or..... Ma-homer

  • Simply the best police show of ever. All the 1990's American police shows are a weak imitation. The script, the great cast and the wonderful storyline was first rate.

  • Best thing to hit Brit tv screens ever from the US Followed by Alias Smith and Jones

  • thanks, I don't remember this scene and I never missed an episode. My favorite tv drama of all-time.

  • Great TV show i loved it then and still do. I remember when the theme tune to this show was released onto a single and was in the music charts here in the UK. Was more real life than a lot of cop shows on TV now. Thanks for posting this.
