That's why I was so confused when I saw Farinelli. I heard 2 voices. I have an odd defect of my ears I can hear uppertones which most people can't hear. Once they tried to find the limits of my hearing and they couldn't believe that my limit is 4x higher than normal. But still it is great how you all made the voice of Farinelli. You get a standing ovation of me! Maybe I'm the only person who hears 2 voices sing.. but that's OK.
that aria is not on the cd... and in the movie it's a very short passage only. if you have the occasion listen to vivica genaux version on youtube ! (qual guerriero)
That would have been cool...the only problem is that while there are men who technically are castrati...they have not been trained in the castrati way which was a unique kind of technique to cater to the almost supernatural and highly abnormal gifts the process granted. Such as the ability to sing a note for two minutes.
Actually, I'm sure they have considered a natural castrato for the singing, but decided againsted it because it is not "marketable." It is a MOVIE and a voice like Radu Marian would bore most untrained, unexperienced ears, if not creep them out completely. Besides, Ewa and Derek's voices are much more dramatic, which is good for a movie spectacle, but nowhere "baroque".
I'm curious on why "Qual Guerriero in Campo Armato" isn't on the soundtrack though.
indeed. It's pretty plausible if you think about it from a physiological POV. If you have a really large air chamber (the lungs of a fully grown man) pushing air through a tiny opening (the space between child-like vocal chords) you end up with a really long lasting stream of air. the theory is that when castrated at the right time the vocal chords will stop growing while the rest of the body continues. pretty neat, huh?
Yet they did such an amazing job of blending the timbre! A difference in timbre is natural at different pitches, only that the best of opera singers could blend them well.
This is unbelievable! It's amazing to see the actaul recordings! You can notice the 'very' obvious difference in timbres. Godlewska's is more pentrating and sharper while Ragin's is softer in volume and darker.

could anyone explain please: did the only mixed the different parts of a song the both singers sang alternately or did they melted the voices also?
Jiwpgakis 3 years ago
as I understood it, they homoegenized the two voices into one in some places. In others it is just Lee Ragin, and in others, just Godslewska.
altodivo 3 years ago
thanks=) anyway they could have taken some real "natural castrato" voices like the one of Radu Marian
